Eclipse of the Sun Now Spotlight

Rufino Tamayo, Perro aullando a la luna (Dog Howling at the Moon)

Rufino Tamayo believed that “the artist is an antenna. . . . Art is fundamentally a message, a means of communication.” In this painting, he transmits the anguish of World War II. As in George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun, Tamayo’s composition features a celestial body, bones, the color red, and a claustrophobic sense of space. The howling dog references Pablo Picasso’s anti war painting Guernica (1937) and Mesoamerican funerary statuettes that served as guides to the underworld.

Día de los Muertos Family Celebration

Sunday, November 1, 12 - 5 pm

Families are invited to learn about how this holiday is celebrated around the world. Meet and create works of art inspired by this celebration with artists Filiberto Perez-Mendoza, Sueey Gutierrez and Manuel Alejandro Macarrulla. Bring your own photographs or other personal items to leave at the ofrenda to honor and remember your loved ones. Activities throughout the day will include Mexican style calaveras, maraca decorating, mask making, face painting, flower crowns, and more!

Awards, Videos, Travelling Show Highlight Stebbins

Emma Stebbins: Carving Out History has been granted two awards, is featured in the PBS production "Treasures of New York", and in art-focused videos for Smarthistory.org. The Heckscher exhibition is now travelling to other museums across the country, first to The Driehaus Museum, Chicago, opening October 9.
