Grayson Chandler exhiits at at the Matney Gallery in Williamsburg, Virginia! Planting Traces April 20th - June 20th

Congratulations to Grayson Chandler

for his upcoming solo at the Matney Gallery in Williamsburg, Virginia!

Planting Traces

April 20th - June 20th

Tide Pool II, 2024, Watercolor and Gouache on Paper, 13.5 x 10 inches, $1,200

Planting Traces, the title of Grayson Chandler’s 2024 Spring solo, alludes to the manner of abstraction that permeates his artwork. Embedded in his process is the idea of allowing subliminal matters the space and time to grow into something more observable, so that something more illuminating may take root. This preoccupation with observation stems from a belief that meaning emerges out of mindful cooperation with one’s surroundings, and that as one becomes more mindful of their environment, a sense of destination is nurtured.

Fountainhead, 2024, Watercolor on Paper, 30 x 22 inches, $3,100

Planting Traces suggests a connotation of passage and growth, imbibing the artwork with an undercurrent of cause and effect. Yet, despite these cyclical overtones, Chandler’s work remains uninhabited by chronological order. Instead, his work echoes outside of history, arousing a place that seems suspended in its own time. What ultimately germinates between Chandler’s artwork and those it attracts, is a place where viewers are given room to grow mindful regarding the nature of their own perception.

At Deborah Colton Gallery

Deborah Colton Gallery is pleased to present Keeping Vigil: Select Works from the Estate of Virgil Grotfeldt.  The public opening reception will be on Saturday, March 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. On Saturday, March 25th, artists Wei Hong and Terrell James will discuss Virgil and his works, followed by a sound meditation experience with Alex Mora of Ethereal Healing Houston. This special program, Keeping Vigil Together will be from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

This exhibition was inspired by the inclusion of Grotfeldt works in The Curatorial Imagination of Walter Hopps at the Menil Collection, an exhibition that opens on March 25, as well as the upcoming book, Artists We’ve Known, Selected Works from the Walter Hopps and Caroline Huber Collection, published by Yale University Press.

Hopps and Grotfeldt met in Houston, Texas in the late 1980's, an exciting and foundational time for the emerging contemporary art scene that helped establish the city as an international arts destination. Through the years the two forged an inspiring professional bond, as well as a deep and abiding personal friendship. By the 1990’s, with the support of Walter Hopps and a robust community of fellow artists, Grotfeldt began to achieve the respect and attention of major art institutions and collectors both nationally and internationally. It was during this time that Grotfeldt met Dutch artist Waldo Bien, (FIUWAC Collection Amsterdam) and made his first works using coal dust and found documents recovered in the rubble of the Berlin Wall. These years mark a time of tremendous inspiration and artistic evolution for Grotfeldt. The works in this show have been chosen to reflect this classic era and capture the mastery of Grotfeldt’s immense talent as an artist.

Virgil Grotfeldt was born in 1948 in Decatur, Illinois. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art education from Eastern Illinois University in 1971 and a master’s degree at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 1974. He moved to Houston in 1977, where he lived and worked until his passing in 2009. As an established working artist, Virgil Grotfeldt holds an impressive exhibition history with over one hundred and fifty solo and group shows world-wide. Grotfeldt’s works are included in the permanent collection of the Menil Collection, Houston, Texas; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas; El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas; Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, Texas; Upriver Gallery Collection, Chengdu, China; NOG Insurance Company, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Free International University World Art Collection, Zeist, The Netherlands among many others.

Two major hardcover books have been published on Virgil Grotfeldt: A comprehensive examination of Grotfeldt’s career and works since the 1970s, Virgil Grotfeldt: Including the Series with Waldo Bien, written by Patrick Healy, published by Wienand Verlag Frankfurt, 2003. Grotfeldt is also featured in Waldo Bien: Including the Series with Virgil Grotfeldt written by Patrick Healy, published by Wienand Verlag Frankfurt, 2000.

Walter Hopps described the art of Virgil Grotfeldt as a “personal meditation on essential life forces.” In Keeping Vigil, the viewer is invited to join Virgil Grotfeldt as he explores the mysterious forces we see and sense all around us. To enter the liminal space between the external world around us and the interior landscape of the mind; to encounter potent imagery of both the familiar and ethereal. Here we find the shadowy figures of man, of nature and of spirit blending, fading, and transforming into one another as if in a dream. As a society in economic, environmental, and cultural flux, many are searching for meaning in the more esoteric realms of healing energy, spiritual practices, shamanism or the exploration of consciousness itself. The work of Virgil Grotfeldt offers a road map for this universal journey; and reminds us that someone walks alongside us keeping vigil along the way.

Deborah Colton Gallery Artist S & S June 4 - September 3, 2022 Open House: June 4th, 1:00 to 5:00 pm

Artist S & S

June 4 - September 3, 2022
Open House: June 4th, 1:00 to 5:00 pm

Deborah Colton Gallery is pleased to launch our Artist S & S Project. This stands for “Artist Solo & Studio” and we are excited about this project, both for the community and the artist that is chosen each year.

Deborah Colton Gallery started in the early millennium in the artist studio building of 2500 Summer Street. One of the reasons that Deborah selected this space was that she wanted the gallery to be in a place where art was created. Our current gallery space started as the artist studio of Molly Gochman. Molly created the space, including the design on the building with the white convex and concave spheres on the outside of the building, which say “Welcome” in Braille. We want to embrace this original vision, just like we did in our old gallery space on Summer Street being in an artist studio building. Thus, during the summer, Deborah Colton Gallery is launching a new project which gives an emerging artist a chance to have a solo exhibition in the main gallery and set up an installation in the back half of the gallery as their working studio. Artist Grayson Chandler will launch this new endeavor with his exhibition IN VIAthis summer. In addition to our normal operations as a contemporary fine arts gallery serving all our artists, this project gives the community a chance to visualize what happens in an artist’s studio. It also gives the artist a chance to see how a commercial fine arts gallery is operated. All works in both the working studio installation and the IN VIA exhibition will be available for acquisition through Deborah Colton Gallery. Public Viewing Hours will be Thursday through Saturday, 1:00 to 6:30 pm. or “By Appointment.”

Born in Houston, Texas in 1994, Grayson Chandler has been exposed to the visual arts since a young age. He began practicing drawing and painting in junior high at Lanier Middle School and continued to practice at Lamar High School where he was awarded the most artistic in his graduating class. Although he graduated in 2018 from the University of North Texas with a BFA in Studio Arts, Grayson debuted at Deborah Colton Gallery in 2017 with his solo exhibition, Tautologies & Memoirs. Thereafter, Deborah Colton Gallery hosted two more solos of his - Cocoon in 2019 and Telos: After Thought in 2020. Grayson Chandler’s works have been exhibited throughout Texas and nationally, and he recently had a solo exhibition at the Pearl Fincher Museum in Spring, Texas, entitled Apophenia.

As Deborah Colton states, “Grayson Chandler has exceptional talent and has met with great success in his artistic career already. He is an outstanding role model for young students who are inspired to pursue a career as fine arts artists, and for those just graduating from university with their fine arts degrees. Having a good understanding of his artistic process and being able to convey this clearly is enriching for anyone coming into the gallery during this time. In addition to our Public Viewing Hours, we hope to have at least one Artist Talk and a Q & A video done during the summer also. These will be able to be accessed at any time on our website.” "I'm excited to launch this new project for Deborah Colton Gallery. I will create a space where the scope of our imagination is given ground to explore the ways we conceive meaning in a manner similar to how life evolves with its environment." Grayson Chandler

Moments to Remember

February 12 - April 23, 2022
Open House: February 19th, Noon to 5:00 pm

Deborah Colton Gallery is pleased to present Moments to Remember, an exhibition featuring photography and film that capture iconic American artists and scenes from the 1960s to 1990s.

American fine art photographer William John Kennedy's limited edition works feature the artistic careers of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana and the birth of the Pop-Art Movement. Taken in the early 1960’s, the collection includes rarely photographed art notables such as Marisol, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg, Ultra Violet, Mario Amaya, Dorothy Miller, Henry Geldzahler and Eleanor Ward.

Filmmaker, photographer, poet and writer, Jonas Mekas, who has been often called “the Godfather of American avant-garde cinema", captured moments that we all cherish in art history, in American history, in life... from well-known independent filmmakers, Salvador Dali, the Kennedy's, Warhol, Yoko Ono and John Lennon, Elvis Presley, the World Trade Center... to the more personal special moments of nature, his family, being human and celebrating life, cherishing each experience to the fullest. This year celebrates his 100th year birthday and much is planned to honor him in many countries. Mekas still-framed photographs and a selection of his most iconic films will be featured.

A native Houstonian and avid photographer, Suzanne Paul, has made an inestimable contribution to representing the arts in Houston and to recording Houston’s art history. In intimate and revealing ways, Paul has documented many of the artists, patrons, and community leaders who have shaped Houston’s art scene from the 1970s until 2005. “If Suzanne Paul was at an event with her camera, it was an important happening,” states Deborah Colton.
