The Slattery Gallery established Casimir Rutkowski, and his friends as artists historically capturing the mid to late 20th century landscapes no longer visually available on the East End of Long Island. Gone are the undeveloped pastoral scenes depicted making the ~east end the East End~ . The abstract Expressionist who painted in this setting set the tone for collectable art reflected today's astounding auction results. Having grown up, and a lone time east end day tripper. Slattery Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by the late Casimir Rutkowski, featuring over twenty works from the artist’s estate, many of which have not been exhibited publicly in more than two decades. The exhibition will be on view from September 3 through October 19, 2026, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 5 from 5–7 PM
Alongside Rutkowski, the exhibition includes works by his contemporaries, each of whom contributed to the artistic identity of the Hamptons. Paintings by Priscilla Bowden, Nicolai Cikovsky, Robert Dash, Cornelia Foss, Jane Frielicher, Balcomb Greene, Paton Miller, Fairfield Porter, Peter Schnore and Ty Stroudsburg are also featured.
This exhibition situates Rutkowski within the broader context of artists who lived and worked on the East End during the mid-to-late twentieth century—a period when the Hamptons served as a vital center for American painting. For more than a century, the Hamptons have served as a magnet for artists drawn to its light, landscape, and community. From early modernists to postwar realists, the region fostered a uniquely American approach to painting—one that balanced observation with abstraction and personal vision.
Casimir Rutkowski and His Circle bring together this legacy through the lens of an artist whose work was deeply rooted in place. By presenting his paintings alongside those of his contemporaries, the exhibition offers a renewed appreciation of the East End as both subject and inspiration.
