Kick off the summer with AFF at our first outdoor screening of the season! Join us this Thursday at Snug Harbor for a special screening of the award-winning Soundtrack to a Coup d'État at 7:30 PM, preceded by a live jazz performance by Craig Harris.

THU, JULY 16 AT 7:30PM
'Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat' by Johan Grimonprez
Snug Harbor - South Meadow
1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10301

United Nations, 1960: The Global South ignites a political earthquake, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach storm the Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe, and the U.S. State Department sends jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. In this gripping essay film, director Johan Grimonprez traces the collision of African politics and American jazz, revealing the forces behind the 1961 assassination of Congo's leader Patrice Lumumba. Through eyewitness accounts, government memos, speeches, and a rich soundtrack of jazz icons, ‘Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat’ examines colonial history in a story whose political resonance remains strikingly relevant today.

'Rediscovering Fanon' by Rico Speight
The Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space
2537 Broadway at 95th Street

Rediscovering Fanon is an independent feature documentary that explores the life, work, and enduring legacy of Frantz Fanon, the Martinican psychiatrist, philosopher, and revolutionary whose writings transformed global conversations about racism, colonialism, decolonization, and human liberation. Combining interviews, archival materials, music, and contemporary political reflection, the film demonstrates the continuing relevance of Fanon's ideas in the twenty-first century.
