Invited by the Petit Palais, Prune Nourry pays tribute to little-known or forgotten female sculptors in Visionnaires. Despite social constraints and limited access to artistic training, a handful of pioneering women succeeded in making their mark in a predominantly male field.

The Petit Palais collection reflects this: barely four percent of its works were created by women. From the sculpture gallery to the garden, the eighteen portraits created by Prune Nourry for the spaces of the Petit Palais bring to life a panoply of female sculptors from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

At the artist’s request, three art historians collected writings and photographic portraits of female sculptors who lived or worked in Paris at that time, a cosmopolitan artistic capital. These include Sarah Bernhardt, Hélène Bertaux, Selma Hortense Burke, Daria Gamsaragan, Käthe Kollwitz, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry and Wang Jingyuan.

Inspired by the power of their creations and the strength of their commitment, Prune Nourry pays tribute to their careers and choices in monumental portraits stripped back to their essentials to let their presence speak for itself.

She chose plaster to echo the Petit Palais sculpture collection, and marble for the eyes, drawing on the museum's polychrome statuary.
