Paint on the Move: Jack Whitten

How can squeegees, rakes, and combs be used to create a masterpiece of art? Discover how American artist Jack Whitten made his mark with unconventional tools. David Driskell was an American artist, scholar, and curator recognized as a leading authority on African American art. Explore Driskell and Lee Krasner’s innovative collage technique; ripping up paintings and re-configuring them to create new compositions. Then create your own collage painting. Have on hand paint supplies, a sheet of paper and a surface for your collage and glue.

Creative License: Out of the Box

What is creativity? How is creativity linked to freedom? Rip up your artwork and create a new one? Use a baster to paint? This live Zoom program highlights the tenets of creative thinking that are exemplified in Pollock and Krasner’s processes and their ground breaking abstract expressionist art. Following a virtual tour of Pollock and Krasner’s studio, participants will create collage-paintings in the sprit of Lee Krasner. Have two sheets of paper, drawing or paint supplies, and glue on hand.

Mosaic of Color: Alma Thomas

An abstract painter in the 1960’s and 70’s, Alma Thomas, was the first African-American woman to have a solo art exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City in 1972. Explore the exuberant color of Alma Thomas’s abstract paintings. Then create your own mosaic of colors in an abstract painting. Have on hand paint supplies.

Print it Out!


Monday, February 9, 12:00pm - 1:15pm (EST)


Discover etchings, lithographs and other prints by Pollock, Krasner, and modern artists. Then, Joyce Raimondo will demonstrate simple printmaking techniques that you can do without a press including collagraph and foam printing.  


Supplies: water-based ink, brayer, tray to roll ink, several sheets of paper. Foam printing: sheet of styrofoam and pencil. For collagraph; cardboard sheet, textured items such as bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, scissors, glue. If you do not have supplies, observe.

Picturing Loss: Bereavement and Art


Wednesday, November 1, 7:00pm - 8:00 pm EDT



Joyce Raimondo leads an informal presentation about how she and famous artists express grief through painting. A discussion of Lee Krasner’s painting following Jackson Pollock’s untimely death is discussed along with artists Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and others. Each artwork serves as a springboard for discussion about the grieving process and participation is welcomed. This special workshop is inspired by Joyce’s loss of her brother as a teenager and the discovery of an enormous strength she found through art. Participants are welcome to share or observe.

FAMILY TOUR AND DRIP PAINTING WORKSHOPS

Most Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout summer


Ages 4 and above and adult companions 


Join Joyce Raimondo for a tour of the house and studio, then express your own creativity in an outdoor hands-on drip painting workshop. For children ages 4 and above accompanied by adults. $10 a person, includes admission and materials (one canvas per person and tempera paint). Maximum enrollment is 12.

PAINT THE SOUND

Pour it! Stain it. Drip It! This workshop celebrates the work of two pioneering women — painter, Helen Frankenthaler, and sculptor, Lynda Benglis who employed poured techniques to create groundbreaking colorful masterpieces of abstract art. Following, pour liquid paint to create your own abstract artwork. 


Have paint supplies on hand such as liquid acrylic, watercolor, or house paint, surface for your painting such as canvas or heavy paper, cups, and sticks. Optional; liquid glue.
