That recognition often has little to do with talent comes as no surprise. Yet fortune reversals can be so dramatic as to make us pause. They herald a paradigmatic change, a new willingness to accept and celebrate voices ignored for too long. Cecilia Vicuña, the subject of our latest ‘Meet the artists’ video, is a case in point. The Chilean-born poet and artist has produced important work inspired by extinction, human rights, and Indigenous spirituality for decades but it’s only in the last few years that she’s received the critical acclaim she deserves. In this intimate interview, the recipient of the Venice Biennale 2022’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement – and object of a newly-opened retrospective at New York’s Guggenheim Museum – discusses how the concept of ‘precarious art’ has sustained her through half a century of artmaking.
