ICONOCLASM
A Trilogy in the Form of a Liturgy

First Act

Opening 12 December 2026, 6.30 pm

Church of San Carlo
Via Bissolati, 33 Cremona

San Carlo Cremona is pleased to announce Bruce Nauman as the artist for the first act of Iconoclasm. A Trilogy in the Form of a Liturgy, a three-part project developed by San Carlo and curated by Stefano Rabolli Pansera.

From 12 December 2026, Nauman's work enters the space of San Carlo and encounters its particular measure: the depth of the nave, its acoustics, light, architecture, and the traces left by time.

Since the late 1960s, Bruce Nauman has developed one of the most radical practices in contemporary art, working across sculpture, performance, film and video, sound, neon, drawing, and installation. In his work, the body, the voice, language, repetition, and perception become tools for unsettling the habitual coordinates of experience and redefining the relationship between the viewer, what unfolds, and the space that contains them.

At San Carlo, this research encounters a place whose architecture still carries a long history of presence, transformation, and absence. The first act of Iconoclasm takes shape precisely at this threshold: where the image no longer coincides with what it shows, the voice exceeds language, and the body becomes an unstable measure of space.

SAN CARLO is an independent space dedicated to contemporary art, conceived and founded by Lorenzo Spinelli as a project for research, production and dialogue between artists, artworks and architecture.

Opening Reception with Carrie Marill & Jan Maarten Voskuil:

In a contemporary iteration of minimalist principles, pure object and pattern offer individual contemplation in the paintings of Carrie Marill and Jan Maarten Voskuil. Voskuil’s sophisticated geometrical experiments have evolved over two decades of thoughtful and slyly humorous engagement with minimalist painting and its philosophical complexities. Marill’s meditations on pattern and volume grant both the artist and the viewer an aesthetic space that is free of preconceived ideas; an opportunity for attentiveness without judgment or limitation. Points of Stillness will showcase new works by the two artists; opening to the public on January 9, 2027.

Marill’s newest works–columns of gestural and limpid crystalline facets painted on linen canvases–delineate a place of stillness and quiet, even among the dynamic shapes and depths that they depict. Her paintings direct us to a thought process prior to assumption or action; a mineral epoch in which untethered perception is a source of profound information. Marill, who recently relocated from Arizona to Mexico, compares her artistic practice to the process of learning Spanish. “I move through Mexico and instead of understanding all conversations, I have become exquisitely attentive. Watching facial expressions, body language, cadence, repetition. I recognize patterns before vocabulary,” she remarks.

A collector of imagery and processes, Marill’s career as a painter is defined by an embodied learning of human perceptive patterns. She has studied and taken as subject matter a range of global and natural visual systems, from plant and coral growth to modernist and miniaturist traditions to quilt designs. In each example, the meditative properties of repetition and limitation become a focus. She says, “Much of my practice begins with what I think of as ‘active noticing’: the slow, deliberate observation of the visual systems that quietly organize the natural world.” In Marill’s new body of work, the chemical processes of molecules arranging into geometrical structures inform paintings that move and systematize in mysterious rhythms–forming an accretion of entrancing and refractive shapes.

Crystals embody a remarkable paradox: they are formed through immense pressure and immense patience, yet they emerge with extraordinary clarity and precision. Their faceted surfaces scatter light while revealing an invisible internal order. In these paintings, crystalline forms become a way to explore how complexity arises from simple rules, how pressure creates structure, and how light can make those hidden systems visible.
–Carrie Marill

Jan Maarten Voskuil’s career as a painter began in the realm of realism, but, like the first generation of minimalist artists, he felt that the dominant painting style of his contemporaries had become specialized to the point of superficiality and sought to pare down painting to its essential parts. “I was making realist oil-paintings and even self-portraits, but it didn’t fulfill me,” says the artist. “I decided to narrow my view and try to return my painting to a reduced and minimalistic aspect. So I ended up making modules, just pure white, simple modules.”

Linen canvases stretched across curved frames, Voskuil’s modules are a fascinating distillation of form–both a radical paring down of the traditional composition of the painting, and unique volumetric objects that challenge the expectation of a straight-edged canvas. In the minimalist tradition, Voskuil saw these modules as an inverse of Carl Andre’s “flat sculptures”, two dimensional shapes that Andre exhibited on the floor. “I said, actually, I'm going to do the same, but for painting,” remarks Voskuil, with a twinkle in his eye. “And I always have this discussion: people tell me, ‘Yeah, but they are not paintings, they are sculptures,’ and I always say, ‘No, they suck as sculptures, but as paintings, they are quite good.’” Working within the range of his mathematical abilities, he plans and constructs his geometrical frames in his own studio, and delights in the chiaroscuro-like interplay of light and shadow along the curved edges of his works.

Voskuil’s work has continued to engage in clever and unexpected ways with the Dutch concepts of De Stijl–in which the art exists for its own sake, unconnected to the artist’s personal narrative–while at the same time tracing a clear arc of personal creative experimentation. When asked about the deep, saturated colors of some more recent works, Voskuil admits, “Well, actually, I do like color. I am a colorist, I think, deep inside. But also, I don’t, because that makes it personal, and it depends on the day and on the person [which color they will respond to]. I don't believe in having a favorite color. I can sympathize with any color.”

There's a conceptual side to my work, but to me, conceptual art is not interesting without the execution. And actually, the execution always gives surprises. That's the most interesting thing about it. That's the real challenge for an artist in my opinion
–Jan Maarten Voskuil

Voskuil and Marrill’s works on linen are connected by a dedication to their craft that extends beyond the modernist milieu, and by an attention to the quiet geometries of light and form. Their works extend a path toward clarity and purpose in a time of fractal distractions, allowing the viewers expansive interior spaces for personal contemplation, as well as connection to a human history of attention and curiosity.

Cooper Cole Exhibits Julien Ceccaldi~Selebu-Swan~ September 18-October 31,2026. Well it's different!

My Opinion: Transitioning language, physical forms and meaning:  In looking up the word ~Selebu~ when connected to Swan as in the artist work I extrapolated the meaning as three fold. A signet becoming a swan, a possible connection to Marie Antoinette?, or a call to change. It appears Selebu~. in certain culture is reflective of.youth and comic books. Having lived through a vast cultural revolution and change I had a hard time connecting the dots of cultural significance and call for anything displayed in the above image. Having seen (liked) watched subway Graffiti Art speed by, Tattoo's meant to call out individuality or connect group belonging , and the vast subterranean landscape of the art world emerge over time to make statements of personal:  I am not sure any artistic comic connection to "Bomb-Shell " worth or concept was necessarily displayed the work above of the  Artist Julien Ceccaldi. Julien did good"Disney- Esque" job in his painting of what I saw as a ~New but the Same~ version of  Cinderella.  I did not see the underplay of hope, or  the macabre in the work. Words carefully crafted were used to define the image below.  Jamie Forbes/Publisher FineArtMagazineblog.blogspot, SunStormFineArtmagazine.com

COOPER COLE is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Julien Ceccaldi. Titled Celebu-Spawn, this marks the artists first show with the gallery as well as his first solo exhibition in Canada.

The summer the French Revolution begins, Prince Louis-Joseph dies of tuberculosis at seven years old. He is spared from having to face the wrath of the people, unlike his younger brother Louis-Charles. Separated from his mother, the second Dauphin is psychologically conditioned into becoming a commoner, and forced to sign a false letter accusing her of abuse. The child’s deposition serves as the ultimate pretext for her trial and public execution by guillotine.

Months later, he lies in bed malnourished and ill. The ten-year-old boy murmurs to his jailer that he heard beautiful music and saw his mother, and passes away from tuberculosis, as his older sibling did years earlier. Like a budding rose set on fire, his promised life of elegance ends as ashes from the blaze of history.

During the autopsy, a royalist physician slices Louis-Charles' heart out in secret, and slips it into his coat pocket while the body is thrown into a mass grave. Preserved in a crystal jar filled with wine, the mummified heart changes hands for two centuries until DNA tests confirm its authenticity in 2000, and it can finally be interred alongside the bones of his brother and parents in the royal crypt.

For two hundred years, the heart of the Prince exists as both relic and evidence. What survives is not the prince himself, but the story of splendour cut short. Hidden from the authorities, and passed secretly from thief to archbishop and dukes, the organ calcifies over time as the alcohol evaporates. Protected in its glass casket, the shrivelled heart has become an impenetrable stone full of memories, suspended in time.

Julien Ceccaldi (b. 1987, Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is an artist whose paintings and drawings depict androgynous characters influenced by Shoujo manga, including The Rose of Versailles, known as Lady Oscar in France and Quebec. Exploring themes of intimacy, aspiration, and freedom, Ceccaldi’s work finds moments of hope and humour within macabre and unsettling situations, such as the quest for love within patriarchal structures.

Ceccaldi received a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal, and has exhibited in galleries since 2007. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions at institutions including MoMA PS1 and MoMA, Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art, New York; Kölnischer Kunstverein, Germany; Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Genève, Switzerland; Consortium Museum and Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles, France; and the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; amongst many others. His work has also been exhibited extensively at galleries internationally and featured in publications including Artforum and Frieze. Ceccaldi lives and works in New York, USA.
