Eclipse of the Sun Now Spotlight Rufino Tamayo, Perro aullando a la luna (Dog Howling at the Moon) |
|
Rufino Tamayo believed that “the artist is an antenna. . . . Art is fundamentally a message, a means of communication.” In this painting, he transmits the anguish of World War II. As in George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun, Tamayo’s composition features a celestial body, bones, the color red, and a claustrophobic sense of space. The howling dog references Pablo Picasso’s anti war painting Guernica (1937) and Mesoamerican funerary statuettes that served as guides to the underworld. |
