The smog and hazy skies seen in NY originated from a massive outbreak of wildfires primarily burning in the Canadian province of Ontario and parts of Quebec, compounded by additional fires in northern Minnesota. [1, 2, 3]
The smoke was pulled southward and trapped near the ground due to a stagnant "heat dome" and prevailing low-pressure wind systems that funneled the particulate matter directly over the Great Lakes and into the Northeast. [1, 2]
