We are thrilled to announce a new two-day public conference in New York City! “Curating Today: Reimagining the Civic” brings a global and intergenerational group of arts practitioners together to present an expansive range of curatorial models and, through panels and discussions, offer new possibilities for what curating can do and be. The conference also showcases the many ways ICI collaborators are defining curating in society today, with presenters including:- Riksa Afiaty (Curatorial Intensive alum, Auckland 2019)

- Risa Puleo (Curatorial Research Fellow, 2022)
The themes of “Curating Today” build on our principle of defining curating in society to examine how art and culture help us navigate social transformations. Curators have historically been understood primarily as exhibition-makers and caretakers of collections within institutional settings. Over the past two decades, however, a parallel definition has gained prominence: the curator as a civic leader, who engages with social and cultural issues through the art of our time. Many of the field's most innovative practices have emerged from curators who are working beyond the traditional boundaries of institutional practice, yet these developments have not been embraced evenly across the cultural ecosystem.
By positioning curating in civic terms, this conference argues, we can gain insight into how curatorial practice can help communities navigate the conditions of our time through contemporary art. A full program of speakers and sessions will be announced soon; learn more and RSVP on our website! |
