INtresti g due to the show of ~No Doubt of the Omnipotence of a Free People~

Since we're not in the Grand Palais today, meet us online. We're drinking coffee and eating croissants in Paris after a day of peaceful protests so please do reach out to meet and discuss.

We brought to Art Basel a capsule of Have No Doubt of the Omnipotence of a Free People, a research-based project tracing the largely overlooked relationship between Romania and Zimbabwe beginning with Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence and drawing a fil rouge through to today.

We were showing 1970s Zimbabwean modernist sculptures, including works by Thomas Mukarobgwa and Joseph Ndandarika, whose work will appear in MoMA’s major 2027 exhibition, alongside evocative marble-powder sculptures by 26-year-old Romanian artist Ana Pascu, and powerful stone and found material sculptures by 35-year-old Terrence Musekiwa. Pre-revolution Romanian conceptual photography by Decebal Scriba and Ion Grigorescu entered into dialogue with the 2017 performance-based work of Admire Kamudzengerere and Rachel Monosov, which zigzags between reality and fiction. A 2015 work on paper in oil-based printing ink and oil bar by Portia Zvavahera caused quite a stir, hanging beside a 1994 painting by Mukarobgwa, one of the first-generation Zimbabwean artists who inspired her.
And paintings by 25-year-old Andrei Nițu sold out while they were still wet.

Read alongside one another, these two histories open questions around liberation movements, collective memory, cultural identity and the promises—and failures—of freedom, while complicating some of the Western narratives through which Romanian and Zimbabwean art histories have been understood.

A new publication by DISTANZ accompanies the project, bringing together archival documents, first-hand accounts, commissioned essays and the work of 67 artists. The book expands the research beyond the exhibition, bringing a largely overlooked chapter of twentieth-century history into a broader international and art-historical conversation. Please reach out if you'd like to order the book.

During Art Basel Week, the Phillips sales  for contemporary art are astounding!

PRESS RELEASE

PHILLIPS MARKS MILESTONE MOMENT IN PARIS AS VENTE ART MODERNE & CONTEMPORAIN ET DESIGN ACHIEVES NEARLY €5 MILLION

Led by Joan Miró’s Peinture from the Collection of Marcel Brient,

Sale Sets New Record for Liu Guofu
100% of Design Lots Sold
Results Underscore Phillips’ Growing Presence in Paris in its 230th Anniversary Year

India Phillips, Managing Director, Modern & Contemporary Art, Europe, said, “This sale represents an important milestone for Phillips in Paris and a significant step in our continued investment in Europe. With our global network of Contemporary collectors, Phillips is uniquely positioned to respond to the growing appetite for historical Modernism, connecting exceptional works with new audiences and bringing them into dialogue with Contemporary art. Paris, as the cradle of Modern art, is a natural setting for this ambition, and we were equally delighted to present Amedeo Modigliani’s Tête in the city ahead of our New York Evening Sale next month. To build on our presence here in our 230th anniversary year is particularly meaningful, reflecting both our rich heritage and our ambition to create new opportunities for the future.”

Clara Rivollet, International Specialist, Head of Sale, Modern & Contemporary Art, Paris, said “It has been an exceptional week in Paris, with the energy surrounding Art Basel bringing collectors and art enthusiasts from across the world to the city. We were delighted to welcome over 1,000 guests to our opening reception and to see such enthusiasm for a sale led by Joan Miró’s Peinture from the Collection of Marcel Brient, Paris. Modern and Post-War French masters performed strongly, with notable results for works by Marc Chagall and Jean-Paul Riopelle. There was strong bidding for Contemporary painting, including Ben Sledsens’ From The Forest To The Sea, following the strong result we achieved in London last week. Asian artists also attracted significant attention, with Hsiao Chin’s Pintura 5 (Painting 5) achieving over seven times its low estimate and Liu Guofu’sCold Mountain 25-6 setting a new world auction record at almost five times its low estimate. Design was a standout, with 100% of lots sold and the majority exceeding their high estimates. These results speak to the breadth of collecting interests in Paris and the exciting opportunities ahead as we continue to strengthen our presence in this important market.”

Menart Fair, Paris, October 23-25th 2026. ~Where Is Home~ the thematic of the exhibition exploring belonging and place. See details below.

An exploration for home address the concept of "othering": to construct to marginalize the  other as individuals or in colonial policies for superiority and rule, as per Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak work in the 1980's as a literary theorists and feminist a systematic.  The description below emphasizes this show as pluralistic, and inclusive to overcome divisions.

7th Edition of Menart Fair
Where is Home?

Thursday, October 22, 2026, 3–6 p.m.
116 rue de Turenne, Paris 3rd arrondissement

From 23 to 25 October 2026, Menart Fair returns for its 7th edition, centered around an essential question: “Where is home?”. Rich in its many resonances, the term “home” opens up a sensitive exploration of the different forms of belonging it evokes. Is it simply a place? Can the mere depiction of a house, a territory or a point of return fully capture its depth? At a time when the world is shaped by mobility, immediacy, fractures and plural identities, “home” emerges as an open, almost vertiginous question. It reveals a fertile tension between origin and becoming, memory and distance, heritage and transformation—all dynamics that the invited artists will bring into dialogue through their works. “Where do I come from?” The question has no single answer. Instead, it opens up a space for plural narratives, overlapping layers and multiple ways of inhabiting the world.
