Patrick Heide Contemporary Art is excited to present Bernardo Ortiz’s first solo exhibition in London. The title Peso Muerto (‘Dead Weight’) comes from the artist's own body. Twenty-three years ago, Ortiz fell and broke his right wrist, which had to be fixed with a metal plate. His hand became less precise in its movements and, at the same time, became to feel constantly present. As the artist explains, he feels its weight, and when he draws, he draws against it. The works in the exhibition grow out of that resistance: the effort of holding a pattern together, the tension between holding on and letting go. Bernardo Ortiz (b. 1972, Colombia) has developed a distinctive practice spanning drawing, writing and typography. His principal interest lies in the notion of the “page” as both a material support and a discursive space, where ideas, words and images intersect and take on new forms.
