Irina Alimanestianu’s paintings operate as visual excavations. Born in New York to Romanian parents, and raised between Western Europe and the East End, she treats landscape as stratifications where personal memory, classical history, myth and the subconscious form distinct but interwoven layers. Painting and collage work together to visually fracture time and space on the canvas. In her recent paintings, fragments of temples, columns, and mythic narratives surface across the work. Gods, ruins, and metamorphoses appear as if remembered by the landscape itself. Pictorial space is sliced, grafted, and reassembled. |
