October 20–25, 2026

Marking its debut at Design Miami.Paris, Galerie Negropontes presents from October 20 to 25, 2026 HALGA, a monumental installation by Italian artist Gianluca Pacchioni, as part of the Design at Large programme. Three monumental oxidised-iron sculptures — Halga II, Halga IV, and Halga VI — occupy the courtyard garden of the historic mansion, creating a landscape of ascending forms. Presented together for the first time in this configuration, the three works form a cohesive ensemble, establishing a dialogue between sculpture, historic architecture, and the surrounding greenery.

Gianluca Pacchioni: Matter as Language

Born in Milan in 1966, Gianluca Pacchioni developed a passion for metal in the 1990s while immersed in the Parisian art scene. Self-taught, he began by experimenting with salvaged materials and ironwork offcuts before developing a rigorous metalworking practice.

Upon returning to Italy, he deepened his expertise alongside master craftsmen and began forging steel himself in his studio. His work gradually expanded to include bronze, brass, and aluminium, giving rise to sculptures and limited-edition furniture pieces in which the transformation of raw material became a true visual language.

At the heart of his practice lies the phenomena of transformation: the action of fire, patinas, molten metals, and the effects of light. His works reveal the tension between the raw power of their materials and the delicacy of the forms that emerge from them. Light plays an essential role, extending these volumes into space and revealing shifting, ethereal silhouettes.

HALGA: A Vertical Landscape

Conceived as a sculptural installation, HALGA brings together three works, each standing three metres tall, to form a unique spatial composition.

The title Halga, a poetic variation on the word alga (“seaweed”), evokes the aquatic world - a reference made clear through the sculptures’ fluid lines and organic branching forms. Like marine plants swayed by ocean currents, the works seem to reach upwards while conveying a sense of perpetual movement.

The installation is structured around a dual tension that runs throughout the series: a persistent, almost architectural verticality on the one hand, and an expansive force that opens the forms without ever enclosing them on the other. Pacchioni describes this dynamic as the very core of the project: an ascending energy constantly driven by a sense of liberation.

These three sculptures also resonate with the gallery’s broader programme this year, particularly in their exploration of verticality and transcendence - themes central to Brancusi’s work. Their upward momentum recalls the Endless Column, an iconic symbol of elevation and the pushing past of material limits. Pacchioni offers an organic, contemporary interpretation of this idea, in which twisting forms and the play of light extend a deeper reflection on the relationship between sculpture, space, and perception.

Installed outdoors, the work transforms with changing light conditions and the movement of visitors. The configuration of the three sculptures opens up a multiplicity of viewpoints and pathways, allowing the forms to continuously reconfigure themselves. More than a collection of works, HALGA offers an immersive experience of landscape in which material, light, and space merge into a single composition.
