THE CROSSING PLACE · INQUIRE

About the artist

Before committing to painting full-time, Antwoine Washington worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. The rhythm of walking routes, moving through neighborhoods, and witnessing the intimate routines of daily life sharpened his sensitivity to family, place, and the quiet gestures that shape a sense of belonging. In 2018, Washington survived a stroke that compelled him to pause and reconsider the course of his life. The experience deepened his understanding of care, vulnerability, and the fragility of the everyday—themes that now resonate throughout both his portraits of family life and his more abstract paintings.

WALK ON WATER

"Growing up, I was fascinated by the Harlem Renaissance artists and how they connected to West African cultures. Artists like Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett weren’t just creating art — they were exploring identity, pan-Africanism, and what it means to be Black. I’m telling stories about our community — stories of struggle, resilience, joy."

COL Gallery exhibition of Lynne Dexler & Vivian Springford through August 29, 2026. See details below.

on view

Lynne Drexler & Vivian Springford

THROUGH August 29

COL Gallery is pleased to present Lynne Drexler & Vivian Springford on view through August 29th.

Vivian Springford, 1913–2003

Vivian Springford's Expansionist Series emerged after a trip to Guadeloupe where she witnessed a volcanic eruption. Rather than depict the volcano itself, she sought to mirror its generative energy, allowing diluted acrylic to pool, bloom, and radiate across her surfaces.

VSF800, 1972–1976
Horse Head Nebula, 1976

Lynne Drexler, 1928–1999

The works on view by Lynne Drexler include early gouaches from 1959 and 1960, alongside later oil paintings that demonstrate the full intensity of her mature vision. Shadowed Memories (1976) and Contained Energy (1979) reveal her sustained engagement with classical music and opera which remained central sources of inspiration throughout her life.

Drexler and Springford were united not by a shared style but by a shared seriousness and a commitment to painting as a practice of discovery, pursued across lifetimes and largely on their own terms.
