For his second participation in MAZE Art Gstaad, François Laffanour is presenting to the public, for the very first time, an unprecedented piece by Brazilian designer José Zanine Caldas. A major figure in 20th-century design, renowned for his work in solid wood, he unveils here an exceptional work, previously kept in a private residence in Ibirapuera, Brazil.

This “Dining Table” is notably distinguished by its top adorned with ceramic tiles, a feature scarcely documented in José Zanine Caldas’s work, giving the piece a remarkable uniqueness. Crafted entirely by hand from hand-sawn sucupira wood and sculpted with traditional tools, the table retains visible traces of manual workmanship. The surface treatment, carried out through sanding and waxing, reveals the wood’s density and depth while highlighting the subtle tension between the massive structure and the delicate ceramic inlay.
