Three Works
by
Athena LaTocha

Athena LaTocha’s practice begins with sustained attention to place—to the narratives, materials, traces, and forces that accumulate within a landscape over time. Translating what is often intangible into physical form, her works forgo straightforward depiction and instead absorb and reflect something of their histories.

Working with ink, soils, demolition sediment, artist-made charcoal, paper, lead, and sound, LaTocha subjects her various mediums to processes of tension, contact, erasure, accumulation, and transformation. Her surfaces bear the marks of both place and body: evidence of what has been encountered, touched, displaced, or left behind. History becomes an immaterial material, layered and carried forward, and made perceptible through matter.

Presented within the industrial architecture of Mana Contemporary’s Biergarten Gallery, these three works invite a physical encounter. Their monumental scale requires viewers to move across and around them, taking in their surfaces gradually and bodily. Yet despite this substantiality, a striking vulnerability remains. Paper, metal, pigment, and sound register the fragility of contact, reminding us that even seemingly solid things remain susceptible to pressure, change, and time.
