Houston, Texas – October 7, 2026 Boldly experimental in his work and unabashedly
positive in his worldview, David Hockney (1937-2026) was one of the world’s most
influential artists, freely embracing multiple careers as a painter, printmaker,
photographer, filmmaker and stage designer. In March 2027, the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston will host the U.S. debut of David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away).
An immersive, gallery-size projection that allows visitors to see the world as if
through Hockney’s eyes, Bigger & Closer offers a unique portrait of the artist,
transcending the conventions of documentary filmmaking to bring viewers
into a deeper understanding of his art. The installation will be on view at the
MFAH from March 7 through September 6, 2027.
“Having had the joy and privilege of collaborating with David Hockney over the years,
I am especially pleased that we will host this marvelous journey through the artist’s
life and work,” comments Gary Tinterow, director and Margaret Alkek Williams chair of the MFAH.
“While visitors in the UK and Asia have been able to experience this remarkable coproduction with London’s Lightroom, our presentation will be the first opportunity for U.S. audiences.” Consistently fascinated with the possibilities of new media, David Hockney embarked in 2020 on a remarkable collaboration with the dynamic videographers at Lightroom, the London-based production house that produces artist-led
digital environments. Together, they created David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) as a dynamic,
immersive 50-minute journey through 60 years of Hockney’s art, which premiered in London in 2023.
David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) was created by David Hockney and Lightroom, London, in collaboration with Mark Grimmer, David Hockney Studio, and the composer Nico Muhly.
