“Hope does not need to be merely a passive wish, it can be an active force to propel us forward, fueling our determination to defy the odds and carve our own destiny. It’s the flicker of possibility that dances in our hearts, reminding us that even when facing challenging circumstances, there exists the potential for inspiration and renewal. I am honored to join Cristina as she shares her remarkable and important work with the world.” ~ Robert Redford

Dear Friends,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer so far! June was an action packed month for us with the much anticipated opening of Carole Feuerman's MONUMENTS OF STILLNESS on Michigan Avenue. We were pleasantly surprised to have our exhibition featured on the front page of the Chicago Tribune. among many other magazines, newspapers, periodicals and TV coverage.

Three days after the ribbon cutting, we celebrated the 100th birthday of Marilyn Monroe with legendary Hollywood photographer Lawrence Schiller featuring his exhibition Motion Pictures. Everything came to a head all in the same week!

The end of June, Danish photographer Jacob Gils flew from Copenhagen to open his Chicago debut exhibition titled The Extended Moment, a collection of multiple exposure photographs that resemble impressionist paintings.

July will be another action packed month as we focus on the works of conservation artist/photographer Cristina Mittermeier from Chicago to Aspen.

The excitement begins at the Shedd Aquarium with ASPEN IDEAS: CLIMATE CHICAGO where Cristina will join a celebrated roster of speakers for the climate summit. Tickets for the series are available at Aspen Institute (information below)

The next day, you are cordially invited to Cristina Mittermeier's Marks of Memory at our River North gallery, an exhibition featuring a new body of mixed-media collages and limited edition prints.

Opening Reception

Wednesday • July 22, 2026

5:30 - 8 PM

Hilton Contemporary

River North Gallery

716 N. Wells Street, Chicago

Internationally recognized for her powerful photography and unwavering commitment to environmental advocacy, Mittermeier has spent decades documenting the relationship between humanity and the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems. In Marks of Memory, she turns toward a more intimate and materially driven mode of storytelling, combining photography with hand-worked surfaces, fragments, and layered interventions that evoke the ways memory is accumulated, altered, and preserved over time.

Three days after the opening of Marks of Memory, we will pack not only Cristina's works, but also the works of Paul Nicklen, Jacob Gils and Carole Feuerman and head to Intersect Aspen and The Little Nell.

The Little Nell will be showcasing Feuerman's DIVER at the Ajax Tavern Terrace in Aspen,

And if you are in Chicago this summer, please take a walk down Michigan Avenue and visit MONUMENTS OF STILLNESS by Carole Feuerman, one of the most inspiring air exhibitions of monumental sculptures gracing the Magnificent Mile.

When you visit our gallery, a collection of smaller tabletop sculptures will be on view throughout the summer and into fall. Please reach out to us for a catalog.

UPCOMING

CHICAGO - Hilton Contemporary is pleased to present Cristina Mittermeier: Marks of Memory, a solo exhibition of new works on view from July 22 - September 15 at Hilton Contemporary's River North gallery.

The exhibition features a new body of mixed-media collages alongside a selection of limited-edition photographs, expanding Mittermeier’s celebrated visual language through layered, tactile works that reflect on memory, place, and the fragile beauty of the natural world.

These new collage works extend Mittermeier’s longstanding exploration of our connection to nature while introducing a new physicality to her practice. Built through layers of image, texture, and mark-making, the works reflect both personal remembrance and collective environmental memory—traces of landscapes, coastlines, wildlife, and lived experience that remain with us long after a moment has passed. The result is a body of work that feels both expansive and deeply personal, balancing wonder with urgency.

Coinciding with the exhibition, Mittermeier will also appear in Chicago as an honorary guest speaker at Aspen Institute's Aspen Ideas: Climate Chicago at Shedd Aquarium on July 21st — a fitting extension of the environmental and conservation themes that have defined her career. Serving as the focal point for the summit's "Evenings at Ideas", the event brings together global leaders, policymakers, and climate innovators.

  • Evening at the Shedd (July 21): From 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM attendees can enjoy climate-focused dialogue surrounded by marine life. The festival's signature "Spark Talks" transforms into "Shark Talks," exploring nature-inspired climate solutions from sea otters, coral reefs, and electric eels.

  • Speakers: In addition to Cristina Mittermeier, the speaker roster includes figures like Al Roker, actor Rainn Wilson, Chef Rick Bayless, and Shedd’s Vice President of Environmental Operations, Allen LaPointe

Mittermeier is widely known as one of the leading voices in contemporary conservation photography. A photographer, marine biologist, and co-founder of the conservation organization SeaLegacy, her work has helped shape global conversations around climate change, biodiversity, and ocean protection.

Yet even as her images bear witness to the environmental crisis, they are rooted in reverence—an effort to inspire care, responsibility, and a deeper sense of belonging within the natural world.

In Marks of Memory, that sense of reverence takes on new form. The exhibition invites viewers to consider how images function not only as records, but as vessels: carrying emotion, experience, and evidence of what has been loved, witnessed, and at risk of being lost. Together, the collages and photographs offer a meditation on remembrance, stewardship, and the enduring marks left by both nature and human presence.

Marks of Memory will be on view at Hilton Contemporary through September 15, 2026.
