Heading to Austin for SXSW? If so, it's time to plan your visit to SATELLITE Art Show!
SATELLITE ART SHOW (popular for their Art Basel Miami platform) will debut it's critically acclaimed art fair during Austin's SXSW week. We have curated a dynamic array of cutting-edge contemporary art and has paired that with a robust performance and music program.
Visual Art Highlights include LA based Float Land Galleries 3-D mapped VR installation by acclaimed artist Petra Cotright. Austin's Dream Logic will outfit the entire ceiling of SATELLITE with their giant interactive "cloud" installation (Last seen at SF MoMA). They will also present a booth of digital art, paintings and sculpture. LA's AWOL gallery will present its "Mars Rover" installation, featuring an actual Mars Rover that visitors can control via remote control. Austin's Plastique collective (known for their environment conscious work) will present a large-scale recycled plastic installation and will host an evening party with us. Philadelphia's BrobDinGang will present the interplanetary painting work of Ana Vizcarra Rankin. Brooklyn's Famous On Mars will feature live tattooing, wearable art objects, and politically charged neon light installations. AnnaLiisa Benston, of Famous On Mars, will also be presenting "Here", a durational performance in which discussion is at the forefront. Spicy Curatins, a New Orleans based experiential bar and therapy spa has prepared a menu for guests that includes CBD oil massages and custom cocktails! Come inside and leave feeling rejuvenated :) New York's Arcade Project will present the iconoclastic paintings of Elizabeth Axtman. Axtman subverts the iconography of black men who become “white famous” by appealing to specific caricatures of black masculinity. Houston based visual artist Jumper Maybach will be on-site and in character showcasing his paintings and wallpapered works of art. Performance Is Alive (our longstanding purveyor of critical performance art) continues to offer viewers a rare opportunity to experience bold, unapologetic and socially conscious projects through the boundless manifestations of performance art. Through the generous collaboration with Houston-based artist and organizer, Julia Claire Wallace (Creative Director of Experimental Action Festival), our live programming celebrates the work of emerging and established Texas-based artists while integrating the performance video works of a global performance community. Performance highlights include Houston's seminal performance artist, Jim Pirtle, exploring new PTSD treatments incorporating ice, projection and multi-media. Michael Anthony GarcĂa's work explores the alienness of being a person of color while creating tulle clad sculptures to a live a cappella soundtrack. Hailing from New York, Nicole Goodwin will immerse her nude body in flour for 4 hours in order to explore racial identity. Also from New York, Prism House + Matt O'Hare will debut "Separator", a 40-minute multichannel video and audio composition.
Staying true to the spirit of SXSW and the vibrant music scene in Austin, we decided to keep it weird and keep it local. That's why we engaged local record labels Self Sabotage Records (a subset of Super Secret Records) and Holodeck Records (started by members of S U R V I V E who are responsible for the "Stranger Things" soundtrack). Together they feature some of the best underground music in Austin, spanning a dizzying array of genres from synth-pop to noise rock. Each showcase will give visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the best of local Austin artists and like-minded national artists set to make their mark at the festival. New York's Prism House and Black Lake Collective will both be presenting experiential music programming set to backdrops of projected visuals and installation elements.
Our media partner Glasstire, the online publication for art in Texas, will be on-site at SATELLITE Austin recording a podcast with fair attendees and special guest hosts. Stop by their van-turned-soundbooth to share your thoughts on the art world, meet local artists, and grab a Topo Chico for the road. Glasstire is the oldest online-only art magazine in the country. We are proud to have promoted the visual arts in Texas to a local, regional and national audience since 2001. Glasstire is the only publication in Texas that is producing serious art criticism on a daily basis. We are the journal of record for the Texas visual art community.
SATELLITE is additionally thrilled to be sponsored by Cat Head Vodka, Red Bull, Mused CBD, Stolen Whiskey, Dolce Vita, Topo Chico, Bloody Revolution, GEM + Bolt Mezcal
