A: To help expand the Band's Legacy for Us All
In 1968-1969 I spent most of my time with The Band photographing them at work and at play in their homes in and around Woodstock, NY. We were friends and I traveled with them as they began touring and recording and produced the iconic images for the “Music from Big Pink” and “The Band” albums. I was the only photographer that had any access to them during this period. It was a time of creativity, music, marijuana and brotherhood. I shot over 10,000 photographs, most of which have never been seen before. In 2015 I published my first book of these photos (The Band Photographs, 1968-1969) but it only contained 200 images and was limited to160 pages.
A year or two later I began looking at a trove of photographs I had uncovered in the process of making the first book. I found an incredible number of really beautiful images that I felt must be published in order to complete a true pictorial history of this amazing group.
