Breathe in The Sky

April 6 - May 25

Breathe in the Sky, a solo show featuring photographs from Hasna Muhammad, the daughter of renowned civil rights activists Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. Her parents' activism provides important context for Muhammad’s work that spans over many years, capturing intimate memories with family, alongside monumental historical events. This exhibit is curated by Haifa Bint-Kadi.

Muhammad was taught that dreaming was insufficient and that it was her duty, alongside her family, to take action if she truly wanted to invoke and see change. She captures the personal and the political through strikingly poignant photography from raw moments captured at her own father’s funeral in Final Days (recently exhibited at Sarah Lawrence College), to the ordinary and beautiful lives of Harlemites of all ages in Harlem Before My Eyes, to her budding personal passion for guitars in My Life with Guitars, and her poetic view of the world in Breathe in The Sky. Muhammad has documented socially and historically significant moments, inviting audiences into her innermost personal sphere.

Exhibition:

Paintings & Works on Paper

March 18 - April 22

Continuing its commitment to bringing the public exemplary art exhibitions featuring both emerging and established artists. Warburton Galerie is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Paintings & Works on Paper by artist Stephanie DeManuelle.

Stephanie's work is nature inspired and semi-abstract-beginning with a continuous drawing process that accretes layers of paint as the artist follows a visual trail through the motif. Her desire in painting is to get beneath the surface of the outward appearance of things to reveal what is significant, but not readily visible. A root or a shell will offer an opportunity to explore shape, line and movement that echoes emotional states that are otherwise inaccessible. The resulting works are experienced through the voice of the material-the use of thickly textured and viscous earth toned mixtures that suggest anthropomorphic or geographic imagery. What is dominant is movement and turbulence. The relationships in the paintings are a 'stand in' for the invisible forces, sensations and tensions that govern our consciousness.

Stephanie DeManuelle grew up in south Louisiana and spends summers in the Adirondack mountains of New York state. She feels the influence of both locales in her work.

Stephanie has been an art educator for the past 35 years, teaching at Parsons School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology. She served as Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at FIT from 2006-2016 after which she retired from teaching.

US+U’s strength of purpose is to combine emerging and mid-career artists in a partnership to embrace a wide range of artistic approaches. This unique relationship creates a community of people who learn from each other through shared ideas and common goals.
