Created around 1920, when Ansel Adams was still finding his way as an artist, the photograph employs a soft-focus aesthetic worlds away from the sharply articulated images that would later define his work. This is the only soft-focus print of this image the Gallery has ever encountered. Here, under the influence of Pictorialism, the young photographer allows the landscape to remain elusive rather than precisely described. The river becomes a dark ribbon, the snow a veil, the valley a study in tonal quiet. Yet even in this youthful work, something unmistakable emerges: the composition is deliberate, the balance between dark and light carefully considered, the landscape both closely observed and deeply felt.
