Paradise is a four episode film series shot on 16mm over the course of three years at TV bar, the dive that Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff ran in Berlin from 2019 to 2022. The series is set in 2023 at a fictional bar called Paradise, and follows a group of bartenders as they navigate instructions from an absent boss who wants the bar to function as a newsroom. The year 2023 was selected as a near future, one which would blend speculative fiction and approximate truth. Paradise is about labor and performance, how much one has to give away while working. With language present only via subtitle, Paradise lives somewhere between photography, theater, and long-form poetry.
