To the people of Yonkers:
When I was named director of Yonkers Public Library (YPL) I couldn’t have imagined that I would begin my tenure with all three library locations closed in the face of a global pandemic.
YPL prides itself on being a safe and trusted gathering space, free and open to all. Coronavirus (COVID-19) turns that into a safety hazard. It anguishes me and the YPL staff that during this difficult time we can’t welcome you in and provide you with friendly service and the comfort of community.
We treasure our library buildings, but our greatest asset is our talented and dedicated staff. I guarantee you that while our buildings are closed they are working on developing new services to help, inform and connect you. Please visit ypl.org or subscribe to our e-newsletter or social feeds for updates as we activate them. In the meantime you can contact the library at info@ypl.org or 914-375-7953, but please allow some time for a response as our remote service plans develop.
I am humbled to become the newest director of this fine institution. In its 127 year history, YPL has weathered two world wars, the Great Depression, the 1918 flu epidemic, September 11th and the financial crisis. It will survive this too, alongside the proud and resilient city that it serves, and emerge from it even stronger.
I can’t wait to reopen our doors to you, to welcome you in, and to get to know you in person. Until then, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at director@ypl.org.
Stay safe and take precautions. Look out for yourselves and each other. Thank you for your patience and support - and please let me know how we can best support you.
Jesse Montero
