ANTONIO CARREÑO: INSTINCT
Artist Interview
|
Profusion, 2017. Oil on canvas, 52 x 48 inches.
INSTINCT, Antonio Carreño's latest series of strong, new works reveal the artist reaching deeply inward. Where his last series of works, QUASAR, focused on the energy and bright light of celestial forces, this new series is the manifestation of the artist's subconscious brought into form.
In an interview with Danielle Rivera, Arts Editor at The Scarsdale Inquirer, Carreño shared his thoughts on the paintings. "{Abstract art] can transport you into other dimensions, not necessarily the physical ones we always turn to. To understand and analyze, you really have to look beyond." With INSTINCT, Carreño was influenced by his own belief in the Jungian theory of the collective unconscious and a search for spiritual elevation. "Humans are constantly evolving and we continue to rise. And this is what we call the collective human mind." Like all of abstract art, when encountering his work, Carreño encourages "each individual, through their feelings, emotions, and determination to see what they are wishing to see." |
Still Rising, 2017. Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches.
Carreño's new paintings are defined by layered surfaces of bold, rich colors and powerful strokes and the titles provide the viewer a clue to artist's psyche - 'Ascending In' to 'Perpetual' and 'Profusion.' Still, there are some real-world threads underlining his work. "There is always the connection back to my roots," he said of his homeland, the Dominican Republic. "Where I come from... we have on the island, the sun, the light. It's always present in your mind somehow."
All in all, Carreño' deepest hope is that his paintings help viewers reach new spiritual heights and "bring us to a realm of peace and enlightenment."
