Barakat Gallery the Gandhara Schist Sculpture of a Bodhisattva

Gandhara Schist Sculpture of a Bodhisattva
3rd Century AD - 4th Century AD
33.625 inches high

In the Buddhist religion, Bodhisattvas are souls who have attained enlightenment and no
longer need to reincarnate, but forsake nirvana and choose to come back to the earthly plane
in order to alleviate the suffering of others. This stunning Gandharan sculpture of a Bodhisattva,
created by the first culture to represent the Buddha in his human form, reveals that these
spiritual beings were celebrated even then, as Buddhism began to spread from India eastwards.

This Bodhisattva is depicted wearing elaborated modeled robes with carefully carved folds.
He sports an elegant coiffure and is adorned in fine jewelry as was appropriate for a worldly
incarnation of the Buddha. Originally, this sculpture probably stood in a niche on the exterior
of a stupa or shine where it would have guided the masses on the path towards enlightenment.

Works by Mary Montes

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 6th, 6:00 - 8:00pm

May 6 - May 22
Artist Mary Montes' solo exhibition titled "de Kooning and Friends" is a passionate display of her abstract expressionistic figures of the New York School during the mid-late 20th century. An ever present inspiration to many of today's contemporary painters, these icons of the New York art scene that were instrumental in securing the American aesthetic's bold and energetic vibe, such as Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Costantino Nivola & Bob Rauschenberg are portrayed in her recent work fittingly shown at the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum.
Her work has been exhibited in the Lowe Art Museum, College of Arts and Science at Miami University, Andy Gato Galleries, Museum of Contempory Art (North Miami), and private art shows in Miami Beach as well as Spectrum Art Fair during Art Basel week. Montes is currently represented by Quogue Gallery in Quogue, NY, as well as Micheal Findlay Gallery and will participate in a group show curated by Peter Marcelle in June 2017.
Mary Montes' abstract expressionistic figures of notables from the art world: Willem deKooning, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollack, Leo Castelli & Bob Rauschenberg are fittingly appropriate for the historic venue of the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum. In addition to the focus on de Kooning, she intends to include works of the woman with this circle of artists, some of which were artists themselves, i.e., Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Ruth Klinsmann. Other subjects of the show include dealers such as Leo Castelli and friends of the New York school painters who spent time living and working in Long Island's East End.
This exhibit is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor M. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and is administered by The Huntington Arts Council Inc.
