James Sterling Pitt The White Peacock Sings

James Sterling Pitt
The White Peacock Sings

Boston, MA – Steven Zevitas Gallery is pleased to present The White Peacock Sings, an exhibition of new sculpture and video by San Francisco-based artist, James Sterling Pitt. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, October 17 through Saturday, December 7, 2013, with an opening reception Friday, November 1st.
On View: October 17 – December 7, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, November 1, 2013, 5:30 – 8 PM

At the core of James Sterling Pitt’s artistic practice is an interest in making the ephemeral and transient flow of life concrete. His work is deeply rooted in his own experiences and observations. In the case of this exhibition, and as the show’s title suggests, a white peacock served as a source of inspiration from which the body of work on view emerged.

Pitt encountered a white peacock at his brother’s wedding in New Mexico. The bird’s presence powerfully affected those staying at the ranch where the wedding was held; for Pitt, it became a potent symbol of his time there. The white peacock soon emerged again, this time on the cover of a Sarah Vaughn album that Pitt came across in a record store. As highlighted in an essay that accompanies the exhibition, the elusive white peacock literally and figuratively connected parts of Pitt’s life in ways that made manifest what would have seemed a series of random moments over time.
Pitt’s sculptures arrive from a rigorous drawing practice. With his works on paper, Pitt manipulates line, form and color as a way of understanding and containing sensory experience in plastic form. The result of these explorations are complex wooden sculptures that seem to have arrived by their own internal necessity, yet teasingly hint at the experiences from which they evolved. Made of carved wood and acrylic paint, each sculpture has its inception rooted in Pitt’s personal experience, and so acts a powerful marker of time and place.
Pitt received a BFA from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in 2000, and an MFA from Mills College in 2003. His work has been the focus of several solo exhibitions in recent years, including shows at: Eli Ridgway and Romer Young Gallery, both in San Francisco, and Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.
Pitt will have a solo exhibition at The University Galleries, Texas State University in 2014. This is the artist’s first exhibition at Steven Zevitas Gallery.
The artist will be in attendance for an opening reception on Friday, November 1st from 5:30 – 8:00 PM. For additional information, please contact Steven Zevitas at 617.778.5265 (ext. 22). Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11AM – 5 PM

Call for Artists: BorderBody | Spain/Poland Video Art / Photography / Painting / Performing art
Deadline: October 20, 2013
International ArtExpo is selecting all photo works, video/short films, paintings and performing art works to include in the next 2013 exhibitions:
BorderBody – International Art Festival Photography, Video Art, Painting and Performing Art held in Almeria (Spain), at MECA Mediterráneo Centro Artístico, during the 14th and 28th of November, 2013 (video screening only), and in Wrocław (Poland) at Gallery MD_S (MD_S – miejsce dla sztuki), from the 10th to the 30th of November 2013.
BorderBody” is conceived as a diffused and nomadic exhibition in different places of the world. The festival is composed by two sections: “Mixing Cities”, which deals with modern urban changes and their influence on citizens, and “Mixing Identities” focused on the hybridization of social identities in contemporary time. Artworks’ selection is  based on the main concept of fluidity, motion, changing networks and cities transformations. In contemporary society boundaries are getting more and more fleeting, and also the identity; what makes every person or place a recognizable entity, turns out fluid, multiple, making the cultural, religious, ethnic borders changeable too. This change, this mutation has allowed to cross the inside of the identities creating new possible crossings, new blends. There is no more limit between an identity and the other one but it is possible to walk, to cross a passage and to find oneself halfway through it, in a non-place, in a non-identity. People, backgrounds, societies, progress and all their inputs creates hybrid identities, modifying each other and being mixed in prospect to shape a better world.
The event is open to photography, video art, painting and performing art. Exhibition at MECA (Spain) is open to video art only.
The deadline for applications is October 20, 2013
To take part in the selection, send your works submissions with a CV/biography, videography and some still images (only for video artists), some samples of works via email to lucacurci@lucacurci.com or via mail to:
International ArtExpo Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 33
70122 Bari, Italy
The number of works you can submit is unlimited. The participation in the International Art Festival requires an entry fee only for selected artworks. Participation open to: artists, architects and designers, associate groups and studios.

Opening of a solo show by Krista Mölder at Temnikova & Kasela gallery

Opening of a solo show by Krista Mölder at Temnikova & Kasela gallery
Temnikova & Kasela gallery is pleased to invite you to an opening of an exhibition by Krista Mölder.
What is a (gallery)space around private and public or the distance between them? What is personal at all? Krista has chosen Luce Irigaray´s quote to charecterize her exhibition: „Thus a way of living together can be founded, in which this togetherness, without being simply visible as such, allows for a place in which we can continue to dwell. This place remains always open – which does not mean simply empty – for a possible welcoming of the other and of that which is realized together“.
Opening: Tuesday, October 22nd at 6pm, Rüütli 4, Tallinn.
The opening is part of Tallinn Tuesdays, evening of extended exhibition viewing and special programs.
The exhibition will be open from Wednesday to Saturday 2–7pm., or by appointment, until December 14th.
