Art Basel Miami Beach - Public Art

Art|Basel|Miami Beach|1-4|Dec|11

Art Public: Transforming Collins Park with a record 24 public art works

For the 10th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the show will collaborate with the Bass Museum of Art on the Art Public sector, which will transform Collins Park with a record number of public art works. Featuring sculptures and performances by renowned artists and emerging talents, the sector will open to the public with a specially curated program of performances by Theaster Gates and the Black Monks of Mississippi, Sanford Biggers and Moon Medicine, and Alalâo presenting Ronald Duarte.
Curated for the first time by Christine Y. Kim, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Co-founder of the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), this year’s Art Public reflects a shift toward expanded conceptual, performative and temporal works. Focused on a strongly defined but varied exhibition area, the grouping of 24 artworks responds to reflections on the art practices of previous decade, leaning toward Los Angeles and the West Coast.
Art Public will open on November 30 with a selected program of performances. The Art Public Opening Night will feature Theaster Gates and the Black Monks of Mississippi, who will respond in song and verse to the works of Art Public in an art-historical and monastic manner. The evening will also include an evocative experimental performance by Sanford Biggers and Moon Medicine combining images of punk, funk, film noir, sci-fi, with traditional Samoan dance, Buddhism and original video content and music. The Alalâo collective, founded in January 2011 by Marcio Botner and Ernesto Neto of A Gentil Carioca and the artist Marcus Wagner, will present 'Nimbo Oxalà' by Brazilian artist Ronald Duarte and will bring the Carioca spirit of Rio de Janeiro to Miami Beach. The additional performances as part of Art Public - 'Transformer Display of Community Information and Activation' by Andrea Bowers and Olga Koumoundouros, 'Iemanjá' by Jen DeNike, and 'Levitating the Fair (The Flying Merchant Ship)' by Glenn Kaino - will open on Wednesday and continue throughout the duration of the fair. These performances will be complimented by works in a variety of media, ranging in date from Bruce Conner's 'LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS' (1959-1965) to the present.

Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon: Premier panellists

This year's Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon series will again feature premier panellists including artists Tracey Emin, Liam Gillick, Emilia and Ilya Kabakov, Gabriel Orozco, and Erwin Wurm, as well as leading collectors, museum directors, curators, academics and many other cultural players.
For a decade now, Art Basel Conversations has offered the public a chance to see dynamic dialogues between prominent figures of the international artworld, debating the key issues facing the artworld today and offering first-hand perspectives on producing, collecting and exhibiting art. This year's program will include 'Art Basel Miami Beach and South Florida: A Decade of Transformation'. The highly anticipated panel will see major Florida-based collectors discuss the cultural developments in Miami Beach and South Florida over the past ten years. Furthermore, an all-female museum directors' panel will discuss 'The Evolution of Museum Missions' while the ' The Future of Artistic Practice' panel will focus on 'The Artist as Poet'.

Art Salon complements the Art Basel Conversations program and serves as an open space for shorter presentations, including panel discussion, lectures and performances. Presenting a range of speakers, this year's program will include a number of stimulating artist talks with Carlos Cruz-Diez, Theaster Gaters, Haegue Yang, Mark Handforth, Ernesto Neto, Tomás Saraceno and Richard Tuttle amongst many others. The program will also include a discussion about 'Regionalism' in a globalized artworld with the Bruce High Quality Foundation, Jens Hoffmann and Chelsea Haines.

ART MIAMI SEES ROBUST FIRST DAY SALES

Exhibitors Prepare For Strong Art Week After Successful First Day

December 1, 2011 (MIAMI, FL)  – Art Miami (www.art-miami.com), the city’s longest running contemporary art fair and anchor fair to the City of Miami, opened to the public for the first full day yesterday, with galleries continuing to report strong sales and promising leads from serious art collectors and museums. Distinguished for its depth, diversity and quality, Art Miami presents an incredible showcase of works from internationally renowned modern and contemporary art from more than 110 international art galleries.

“Attendance on the first day of Art Miami was very strong, and galleries reported solid sales after a banner Opening Night VIP Preview,” said Nick Korniloff, Director of Art Miami. “In light of the competing opening day for Art Basel, we saw acontinuous flow of qualified attendees—numerous galleries reported sales from loyal returning clients and new clients alike. These are all great indicators for a strong week ahead,” stated Korniloff."

James Barron, owner of James Barron Art stated, “We had a great Opening Night of the Fair. We sold several important works within the first 5 minutes to major American collectors. On our first full day (Wednesday), we had reserves for several paintings with museum trustees and collector committees. With the stock market being shaky, people are investing their funds in superb quality works at the right prices, and that is what we are exhibiting.”

Several galleries reported speaking with collectors, curators and artists from Miami, Palm Beach, Aspen and abroad, including Wilbur and Hillary Ross, Kathryn Mikesell, Newell Harbin, Belkis Nasser, Farrah Nasser, Christopher Coleman, Michael Dweck, and many more.

Running from November 29 – December 4 in a state-of-the-art 125,000 square foot pavilion in Midtown Miami’s burgeoning Wynwood Arts District.  Now in its 22nd year, Art Miami includes modern and contemporary paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and prints from Europe, Asia, Latin America, India, the Middle East and the United States. Situated in a newly designed pavilion, one third larger than last year, Art Miami has grown to include more than 110 galleries 18 countries, and will showcase 1,000 artists from 60 countries around the world. From the United States, 400 artists will be shown from nearly 100 cities. For a complete list of exhibitors, visit www.art-miami.com.

Technicolor Skull LP cover
Technicolor Skull
is an experiment in light and sound, exploring the psychic impact of a magick ritual in the context of an improvised performance. With Brian Butler on guitar and electronic instruments, and Kenneth Anger on theremin, their collaboration is a performance contained inside a ritual of unknown origin, tapping into occult stories that extend musical language into initiation. Hidden messages escape through gesture and light, manifesting as a one-time-only event.
