BORDERS by Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir in Dad Hammarskjöld Plaza

Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir's Borders on display at Dag Hammerskjöld Plaza

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce the exhibition BORDERS by Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir in Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza from March 24 through September 30, 2011. The installation features twenty-six androgynous, life-size sculptures, thirteen aluminum and thirteen cast iron, which extend throughout the park from First to Second Avenue on East 47th Street. BORDERS will be the park’s largest exhibition to date and the first exhibition to incorporate the entire park.
“Dag Hammarskjold Plaza is the gateway to the United Nations and a hub of international activity that serves thousands of people and hosts hundreds of political events each year,” said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe.  “The new public art installation, BORDERS, will connect many diverse constituencies to new artistic experiences.  It will foster conversation and provide a significant backdrop for daily events at this public space.”
BORDERS was created specifically for Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza and directly responds to the park’s design and infrastructure, as well as the United Nations headquarters located at the eastern end of the park. Thórarinsdóttir’s figures, standing along the main park corridor and seated on park benches, mirror each other in silent conversation and form unseen borders that visitors are welcome to cross—serving as ambassadors between sculptures. The exhibition addresses humanity and cultural diversity, an exceptionally appropriate theme for one of the most culturally and politically active sites in all of New York City.
Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir (b.1955) studied at the University of Portsmouth Fine Art Department in England and the Accademia di Belle Arte in Bologna, Italy. She has been working professionally for over 30 years and has exhibited widely in Europe, Japan, the United States, and Australia. Her works are in private, public, and corporate collections around the world. She has completed commissions at Leifur Eiríksson International Airport, Iceland, and the two-part memorial Voyage in Hull, England, and Vik, Iceland among others.  Thórarinsdóttir recently finished a 9 meter high sculpture for the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.  Her exhibition Horizons which was first exhibited in early 2007 at the Katonah Museum, New York has since traveled to six venues. Among them are the Dixon Museum and Gardens, Memphis, Tennessee; and Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, Illinois.  On January 31, 2011, Horizons inaugurated the new sculpture garden of the Georgia Museum of Art where it will be on view through June 30, 2011. Thórarinsdóttir lives and works in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir is the latest in a long list of distinguished artists to be exhibited with the Department of Parks & Recreation, including Robert Indiana, Mark DiSuvero, Dennis Oppenheim, Beverly Pepper, and Jessica Stockholder. Parks & Recreation’s public art program has consistently fostered the creation and installation of temporary public art in parks throughout the five boroughs. Since 1967, collaborations with arts organizations and artists have produced hundreds of public art projects in New York City parks.

Last week to enter FilmsOnArtists 2011 Juried Show!

Win a documentary film about your art and a solo show at Rogue Space | Chelsea.

Juried Show

Following the success of our 2010 international, all-medium juried art show and award of the top prize of our "Artists Exhibition Package", FilmsOnArtists is proud to announce our 2011 competition.

40 artists will be juried by our judge David Masello for a show at our gallery Rogue Space | Chelsea. From that show one artist will be selected to have a solo show, reception and a screening of the documentary we create about their art.

As an artists friendly initiative FilmOnArist does not take commission from sales. However we ask that artists who sell work during our juried show make a tax-deductable donation to FOA's Haitian Children's Art Project at the Maranatha School and Orphanage in Port-Au-Prince.

FilmsOnArtists (FOA) is a new media production company based in the Chelsea district, NYC that creates enlightening and inspirational documentaries about artists around the globe. Our intent is to illuminate and educate via the experiences of the creatives who are interpreting our world.

The Orchard Windows Gallery has invited celebrated New York artist, Eddie Rehm, back for his third solo exhibition.  "Instant Gratification Abstract is a term I use to describe my art and the style in which I present each piece,” says Rehm, when asked to describe his work.  Rehm’s art has been displayed throughout New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Pennsylvania, as well as many local Art Leagues and Associations.  His work will also be displayed in the upcoming 2011 Art Basel Miami, along side internationally renowned contemporary artists.

Rehm’s last show Belligerence which consisted of a full gallery conceptual installation, created an aggressive buzz, aptly fitting the show’s title. “With an overwhelming positive response from collectors, patrons, and press publications, I am excited about continuing our artistic collaboration, representing Rehm’s work and giving him another exhibition,” says Dino Eli, owner of Orchard Windows Gallery.

On the theme of his new show, Abandonment to Revelation, Rehm reveals his impetus:  “My work is my interpretation of today’s society, since I have lived a life that many Americans are also currently enduring.  I have been abandoned, slandered, divorced, bankrupt, homeless, and jobless.  I have recently lost not just friends, but family.  I have suffered through so many conflicting emotions simultaneously:  belligerence, anger, depravity, sorrow, indifference, and pain.  I have lost it all!  So art to me is therapeutic; it’s my way of working through all of these recent personal, but somehow collective, tragedies.  At the same time, each person’s experience is unique, and while I feel everyone can relate to these experiences in some way, my art transcends that experience, representing my journey toward enlightened ideas and raw emotion through progressive thought.  Through these gut-retching experiences or perhaps in spite of them, I am meeting myself again as if for the first time.  In doing so, through my art, I am asking the very questions that most people won’t, can’t, or bury down deep so they don’t have to deal with them.  I am not ashamed of these questions or where they lead us, but intrigued!  Through these tribulations, I have learned that we are, at the same time, our own best friend and worst enemy, and despite this, we can find our own answer.  So I have come full circle and this work is the beginning of this enlightenment.”

If this does not spark your curiosity, then you should check out the exhibition simply to get a forward
looking glimpse of what 21st century art will be.  According to Dino, “His style is unique, raw, and refreshing.  I believe it's only a matter of time before the whole world knows who he is.”

Jacco Maris Design

The Outsider
Unusual outsider. Silent witness. Robust charm. Impressive aura. Illuminating element.

The outsider is an imposing lamp for indoor and outdoor use; an intriguing object that combines decorative simplicity with a hefty dose of robust charm. The pedestal and the arched frame are made of powder-coated steel and the shade is made of cast aluminium. The large window, made of clear glass, endows The Outsider with an illumination pattern that delights the eye. This exclusive lamp is available in black, white and aluminium blank and has a pedestal with bolt apertures for attachment to a hard base such as stone or concrete. Another version is available that can be embedded in cast concrete. The standing lamp is joined by a hanging lamp, an adjustable hanging lamp and a wall lamp.

Jacco Maris DesignMaking something from nothing and creating optimum designs from minimal amounts of materials.
