Photo by Robert Divers Herrick Monir Farmanfarmaian: A Mirror Garden High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA November 18, 2022 - April 9, 2023 One of the most influential Middle Eastern artists of her generation, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922–2019) articulated her singular vision through mirrored mosaics, reverse-glass painting, and works on paper that recall both traditional Persian craft and the reductive abstraction of the 20th century. Opening at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, Monir Farmanfarmaian: A Mirror Garden is the first posthumous exhibition at an American museum showcasing the work of the celebrated Iranian artist. Visit the Exhibition Curated by Michael Rooks, the High Museum's Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, A Mirror Garden marks the first time a US museum has highlighted the breadth and complexity of Monir's practice. The exhibition includes a selection of sculptures, drawings, textiles, and collages spanning four decades, including Farmanfarmaian’s cut-mirror sculpture Untitled (Muqarnas) (2012), acquired by the High in 2019, as well as lesser-known works, such as Monir's geometric carpets and her Heartache Boxes, a series of autobiographical, mixed-media sculptures. The exhibition’s title comes from Farmanfarmaian’s eponymous 2007 memoir, which evokes the visual splendor of the artist’s mirror-mosaic sculptures, as well as the dazzling life she led. National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian, Native American Heritage Month Honoring Veterans!

Dear Friend,  Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize and honor the many contributions of Indigenous communities to our world. And with Veteran’s Day approaching, we want to honor Native Americans who have served in the United States armed forces—in great numbers—since the American Revolution.  Despite this 250-year legacy of heroism and sacrifice, Native American military service went, for far too long, unrecognized at the national level. But thanks to the generosity of members and friends like you, we opened the National Native American Veterans Memorial to the public on November 11, or Veterans Day, 2020.  And in two days, the museum will pay tribute to our nation’s long unsung Native American heroes through the formal dedication of the memorial, including a ceremony, which will be livestreamed, and a procession along the National Mall in Washington, DC, and a host of special events.  The museum’s efforts to acknowledge and celebrate the lives and contributions of Native Americans in all their diversity would be impossible without the generosity of people like you. That’s why I hope you’ll join the museum today.  In partnership with Native veterans and their families, tribal communities, and veterans’ organizations, we are contributing to the evolving national narrative about Native American service, specifically as it intersects with contemporary Native American life and communities.
