Life After Death: Surviving Suicide
Richard Brockman, MD

Life After Death is a memoir interweaving the story of a boy’s world shattered by the suicide of his mother, and how the adult he becomes grows and learns to reckon with its aftermath. Now an expert in genetics, epigenetics, and the biology of attachment, Brockman weaves together a narrative of childhood despair with an adult's clinical knowledge, and shows how those shattered pieces of self can sometimes be put back together again.

"A brilliant wrestling of the mind and heart. Brockman brings the reader into his shattered world where chaos and annihilation reign in the long shadow of trauma. His soulful search to find healing and wholeness is disarming and breathtaking." ~Kathleen M. Pike, PhD

Richard Brockman is a clinical professor in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University and a visiting professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Namibia. He has been honored with the Nancy C.A. Roeske Award for medical student education by the American Psychiatric Association and with the Victor J. Teichner Visiting Scholar Award from the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry for his teaching. His previous book, A Map of the Mind, was acclaimed by the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Psychiatric Association.

A.M. Homes & Carl Bernstein
The Unfolding
LOCATION: Christ Episcopal Church

Join us for a provocative discussion with renowned journalist Carl Bernstein and acclaimed novelist A.M. Homes, as they discuss Homes' recent book, The Unfolding. The story opens on election day, November 2008. It tracts the uncharted territory forward for those who lost as they plan to wrestle back power, even as their leader's family unravels.

Homes and Bernstein will discuss what it is to write political fiction with roots in history and fact. The two writers will also talk about growing up in the Washington DC area, and how that influenced their sensibilities and perceptions of the world.

A.M. Homes is the author of thirteen books, among them the best-selling memoir The Mistress’ Daughter; the novels This Book Will Save Your LifeThe End of Alice, and Jack; and the short story collections Days of Awe, The Safety of Objects and Things You Should Know. She also writes for film and television, and teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University.

Carl Bernstein is author or co-author of seven books: All the President's Men, The Final Days, and The Secret Man, with Bob Woodward; His Holiness: John Paul II and the History of Our Time, with Marco Politi; Loyalties; A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton; and Chasing History, a memoir of his early years in journalism. He is a regular political commentator on CNN.
