Artist Grant Offered by
Provincetown Art Association and Museum Now Open for Submissions

Provincetown, MA: The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant for artists, offered annually by the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), is now open for submissions. The grant is available to American painters over the age of 45, and jurors look particularly for those who demonstrate financial need and/or are under-recognized. Those interested should visit www.paam.org/grant for more information and to apply. Grant recipients receive a cash award and an exhibition at PAAM.

The late Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed studied with Hans Hofmann in both New York and Provincetown. They were very active at PAAM as artist members and instructors in the summer school, and they served on a variety of committees throughout their 50 years on Cape Cod. Orlowsky, in particular, was sensitive to the challenges artists face, especially those working against the mainstream or outside of popular schools of art. Her desire to provide financial support to mature artists through this generous endowment gift speaks to her passionate commitment to art for art’s sake and art created regardless of the demands and whims of the market place.

After the Hoppers Features Artwork Created by Provincetown Schools Students and Educators in PAAM's Lenore Ross Curating Program

Provincetown, MA: In 2017 when the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) received an unprecedented gift of drawings and watercolors by Edward and Josephine Hopper, and precious ephemera from the couple’s home and studio in Truro, Massachusetts, the acquisition presented a treasure trove of opportunity to use the collection to enrich educational partnerships with local schools.

PAAM’s Lenore Ross Curating Program—which invites educators and students from schools along Cape Cod to work with and be inspired by artwork from the permanent collection, and culminates with an exhibition in the museum galleries—seemed like the perfect place to start. And who better to collaborate with than Provincetown Schools, the institution with whom the Curating Program was launched 26 years ago this February?

In January seventh and eighth grade students and thirteen educators from Provincetown Schools attended sessions in PAAM’s galleries and Museum School to sketch, write about, and create prints in response to work on view in the exhibition Edward and Josephine Hopper from the Permanent Collection (on view through April 1, 2018). Student and educator work will be on display from Saturday, February 3rd through March 4, 2018.

Lynn Stanley, PAAM’s Curator of Education, says “Many of Edward Hopper’s works in the permanent collection are drawings from life and preparatory sketches for well-known paintings. Some have been done quickly—gesture drawings of a figure, an architectural detail, or brief sketches capturing a landscape. As Hopper scholar Gail Levin has noted, the taciturn artist would have considered the drawings not worthy of public display. But what the viewer comes away with is the sense of an artist’s daily practice—an intimate look at how Hopper used drawing to study and develop a subject—which demystifies his creative process. And what’s unique about this Curating Exhibition is that visitors will be able to see the work of the Hoppers in total, and then re-experience it through the interpretations of young people and educators.”

After the Hoppers features work by Provincetown Schools educators: Mary Abt, Tracey Anderson, Rick Gifford, Michael Gillane, Beau Harrell, Veronica Londergan, Marianne Lynch, David McGlothlin, Jennifer Paine, Eleanor Richard, Amelia Rokicki, Eric Shannon, Judith Stayton; 7th graders Jamar Afflick, Riley O'Rourke, Dashiell Parlante, Daniel Turner, Iris Elizabeth Wanck, Jack Wells-Benson, Owens Wells-Benson; and 8th graders Kayleigh Brown, Christina Egeli, Katerin Maldonado, Emmanuel Millan, Jodi-Ann Morrison, Tess Olson, Jazmin Perez, Esmerelda Rivera, and James Souza Jr.

A celebratory reception will be held Friday, February 16 from 1-3pm. The public is warmly invited to attend.

Carly Glovinski
How to Build a Fire

February 15 - March 17, 2018
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 15, 6 - 8pm

Morgan Lehman Gallery is pleased to present "How to Build a Fire," Carly Glovinski's first solo exhibition in New York City. The show's title refers to the "log cabin" technique of creating a fire by stacking alternating wood sticks in pairs and igniting them to stay warm. This piled wood architecture becomes an important structuring device that informs much of the creative process in the artist's latest body of work. The image of a homemade fire also has symbolic resonance, evoking narratives of survival, comfort, nature, recreation, and community.
Rooted in observation, Glovinski's practice is inspired by an astute curiosity about the patterns, icons and organizing mechanisms of the everyday world.  Employing trompe l'oeil and methodical craft techniques, Glovinski aims to bend our perceptions of the things we recognize and take at face value, allowing for unexpected connections to be made between the materiality and iconography of objects.
These recent drawings, wall-hangings, and sculptures consider the organizing systems inherent in woven textiles, rugs, and stacks of wood, as well as the narrative symbolism embedded in quilting patterns, and are often the result of the accumulation of simple repeated gestures. Working from a studio located in a historical New England textile mill, Glovinski makes a direct connection to that past, and by employing craft in a manner that is self-aware of its history, she acknowledges its transcendence from decoration to language and invites the creation of new meaning.

Carly Glovinski was the 2016 recipient of the Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and an Artist's Resource Trust (A.R.T.) grant from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. She received her BFA from Boston University in 2003 and has been awarded residencies at the Studios at MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, Teton ArtLab, Jackson, WY, and the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Rockland, Boston Center for the Arts, Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME, Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, FL, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City, and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Recent and forthcoming solo exhibitions include "Scout Land" at Carroll and Sons, Boston, MA, and shows at the Colby Museum of Art, Waterville, ME, and at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Glovinski lives and works in Dover, New Hampshire.
