Liquid Identities | Venice (Italy) - Opening Today!

Liquid Identities | Venice (Italy)
Opening: September 28, 2012

Liquid Identities, an international video-art festival and photography exhibition, will be held in the city of Venice. The Scoletta di San Giovanni Battista e del SS. Sacramento in Bragora, the venue of the event, will open its doors on Friday, September 28, until Sunday, September 30Fifty-seven artists, thirty-two video artists and twenty-five photo artists from different countries have been selected to be part of this project.

Click here to download the invitation card!

The selection has been based on the main concept of “Liquid Identities” based on fluidity, motion, changing networks and cities transformations. In contemporary society boundaries are getting more and more fleeting, and also the identity; what makes every person or place a recognizable entity, turns out fluid, multiple, making the cultural, religious, ethnic borders changeable too. This change, this mutation has allowed to cross the inside of the identities creating new possible crossings, new blends. And it’s just this “contemporaneity” that makes our civilization conceived as subjected to a process of continuous evolution and cultural hybridization. There is no more limit between an identity and the other one but it is possible to walk, to cross a passage and to find oneself halfway through it, in a non-place, in a non-identity. This project is about temporary roles in changing rules, thinking about liquid borders in new evolving worlds.

The Curator’s Eye and Michael Backman Discuss Art and Technology

The Curator’s Eye and Michael Backman Discuss Art and Technology

LONDON - The Curator’s Eye, (www.CuratorsEye.com), the distinctive online platform for the finest art and antiques from distinguished dealers across the globe, recently discussed the evolving role of the internet in the art market with leading London-based dealer Michael Backman. In addition to maintaining a gallery space for his Islamic, Indian, Chinese, Tribal and Southeast Asian offerings, Mr. Backman has incorporated and embraced technology into his business model.

In his view, “the internet is an extraordinary way of developing and uniting a disparate client base. I can be in touch with clients from Peru to Mongolia all from my desk in London.” Indeed, Mr. Backman uses CuratorsEye.com as a marketing tool rather than a direct selling site. “After the initial introduction takes place, I engage the potential collectors with my newsletters and monthly new offerings, which are being received well.”

As the recent International Art Industry Forum in Vienna proclaimed, the art world is currently undergoing a “watershed moment in the convergence of the art business and digital technology.” A panel convened to discuss “how new enterprises are creating business opportunities and transforming established art-businesses.” As a digital art marketing platform, The Curator’s Eye seamlessly integrates into the current structure of the high-end art world and helps private dealers expand their global customer base for their remarkable objects.

However, as Mr. Backman noted, “Selling art and antiques is as much about relationships as it is about objects.” He recounted, “One client was born in a longhouse in the jungles of Borneo. He is not a collector so much as he was looking for traditional Iban heirlooms to pass onto his children. The family had exhausted its supplies of their traditional art and so he contacted me via the internet to acquire more. This is certainly an example of how The Curator’s Eye, with its global reach, can be a significant tool for dealers.”

As the art world expands into emerging markets and younger generations do more and more research online, The Curator’s Eye is poised to facilitate these initial virtual connections. Today, collectors from Monaco, India, France, Brazil, and Russia are among the registered users from over eighty countries. To view outstanding items available from the top dealers across the world, visit http://www.CuratorsEye.com/.

Curiouser & Curiouser | Opening Reception for Pop-Surrealist Nicoletta Ceccoli

    The Art of Nicoletta Ceccoli
    Reception November 17th, 2012
    Exhibition through February 3rd, 2013

     Contact Heidi Leigh / 212.226.7374
    Nicoletta Ceccoli Header

Nicoletta Ceccoli's most recent collection of paintings is inspired by the interplay between bitterness and sweetness. Sweets, whether cakes or candy, are universal icons of pleasure and desire and generally regarded as positive, happy things. Ceccoli turns our assumptions on their side by using sweets to highlight the pleasurable aspects of these sugary treats while at the same time showing us the conflict we feel towards our appetites. Her paintings depict dreams of lovely things, but with darkness lurking just behind them, like the dark side of childhood nursery rhymes. The new works will be unveiled at an opening reception on November 17th from 6 to 8 pm. The reception is free and open to the public with RSVP requested to rsvp@afanyc.com. Exhibition on view through February 3rd, 2012.

AFA is located at 54 Greene Street (corner of Broome Street), in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. Hours are Monday - Saturday, 10am - 7pm and Sundays 11am - 6pm. To request more information contact Heidi Leigh at heidi@afanyc.com or 212.226.7374.

Nicoletta Ceccoli is from San Marino and graduated from the Institute of Art in Urbino. Her paintings are beautiful and intriguing, consistently striking a delicate balance between disturbing and enchanting. At first glance, her work masquerades as youthful and innocent but a darker narrative inevitably unfolds. Each painting is rife with symbolism that sparks the viewer's imagination and inspires a deeper level of consideration. Ceccoli's work has been exhibited worldwide including solo exhibitions in the US, Italy and France.

Exhibition Opening | Kathie Olivas' "Misery Children"

NEW YORK, NY AFA of SoHo presents "Haunted", an exhibition of new original paintings by multi-media artist Kathie Olivas.  "Haunted" is the artist's most ambitious body of work to date, and explores the evolution of her well-known Misery Children, who convey our discomfort with the unknown, and address society's insatiable desire for 'cuteness'. A dark rendition of early American portraiture set in post apocalyptic times, Olivas' paintings and custom toys are a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality.

A reception for the Artist will be held at AFA on October 20th from 6-8PM. RSVP is requested via rsvp@afanyc.com or 212.226.7374. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and runs through December. AFA is located at 54 Greene Street (on the corner of Broome) in SoHo.

Kathie Olivas is a multi-media artist who resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since receiving her bachelor's degree in visual arts from the University of South Florida, her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the globe, and is part of several permanent museum collections. Olivas showcases her artistic talents in a myriad of ways. Currently she is working on her second catalog raisonnée and creating a collection of  limited edition vinyl toys.

"For the past 15+ years I have explored the themes of personal struggle and balance through The Misery Children, my childlike alter egos. While introducing the new characters who emerged for the "Haunted" exhibition, I delved deeper into my explorations than ever before."

Olivas and her husband, fellow artist Brandt Peters, co-own and operate Circus Posterus Inc, an international artists' collective and fine art editions company. The couple recently opened a brick and mortar gallery space in Albuquerque, NM called Stranger Factory, which focuses on contemporary character design.

    Featured Artist - Daniel Pešta

Daniel Pešta, puzzle (detail), 2011. Latex rubber

    Daniel Pešta

Daniel Pešta was born in Prague in 1959. During the Communist regime he moved outside the official artistic and social circles. He changed his jobs often in order to be able to dedicate his spare time to his free artistic creations. Later he worked in the field of applied graphic artespecially poster design, which he had studied at the Václav Hollar Art College. After 1989 he designed a series of album covers for a classical-music publisher. He engaged himself in graphic arrangements of catalogues, receiving awards for book and poster design.

In his free creations Pešta systematically develops in his own unmistakable style. He dedicates himself primarily to drawing and painting, in time he begins to experiment with a wide variety of natural materials, such as wood, paper, wax and leather.

In 1998 and 2000 he introduces his work at his own exhibitions in New York. These study journeys are the milestone for the author’s creative work and subsequently bear fruit fully manifesting themselves in 2003, when he moves away from painting and begins to create with transparent acrylic materials, working withphotographs. He seals his older rolled-up pictures into tightly-shaped columns, giving rise to the “Genetic Codes” and a series of “dark assemblages“, he implements conceptual projects, he films videoart

Pešta’s works are exempt from aesthetic kitsch, often hovering on the edge of raw naturalism. In the majority of cases they reflect the social and political situation. His masterful psychological analysis of the individual or society at large impedes any pathos whatsoever. The genesis of his works is subordinated to a precise preparation, he progressively works on their final form over a number of years.

Daniel Pešta has shown his work at dozens of one-man exhibitions in both Europe and America. He is represented in important museums and collections, he attends biennales of contemporary art. He is a member of the Mánes SVU Association, he lives and works in Prague and Frankfurt am Main.
