EMILY DICKINSON IN LIFE AND POETRY IS THE SUBJECT OF A MAJOR EXHIBITION AT THE MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM

EMILY DICKINSON IN LIFE AND POETRY IS
THE SUBJECT OF A MAJOR EXHIBITION
AT THE MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM
I’m Nobody! Who are you? The Life and Poetry of Emily Dickinson
January 20 through May 21, 2017
**Press Preview: Thursday, January 1910–11:30 am**
RSVP: media@themorgan.org

New York, NY, December 13, 2016 — One of the most popular and enigmatic American writers of the nineteenth century, Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) wrote almost 1,800 poems. Nevertheless, her work was essentially unknown to contemporary readers since only a handful of poems were published during her lifetime and a vast trove of her manuscripts was not discovered until after her death in 1886.

Often typecast as a recluse who rarely left her Amherst home, Dickinson was, in fact, socially active as a young woman and maintained a broad network of friends and correspondents even as she grew older and retreated into seclusion. Bringing together nearly one hundred rarely seen items, including manuscripts and letters, I’m Nobody: Who are you?—a title taken from her popular poem—is the most ambitious exhibition on Dickinson to date. It explores a side of her life that is seldom acknowledged: one filled with rich friendships and long-lasting relationships with mentors and editors.

The exhibition closely examines twenty-four poems in various draft states, with corresponding audio stops.  In addition to her writings, the show also features an array of visual material, including hand-cut silhouettes, photographs and daguerreotypes, contemporary illustrations, and other items that speak to the rich intellectual and cultural environment in which Dickinson lived and worked. The exhibition is organized in conjunction with Amherst College.

“Emily Dickinson’s work—and life—remain endlessly compelling to literary scholars and to the larger artistic community,” said Colin B. Bailey, director of the Morgan Library & Museum. “With its experimental poetics and vivid language, her verse continues to be a source of critical inquiry, while her quiet, unassuming years in Amherst are celebrated in music, theatre, and the cinema. The Morgan’s exhibition explores a less well-known aspect of her life—her personal and professional friendships—that will surely delight and surprise exhibition-goers.”

The only authenticated image of Emily Dickinson, Daguerreotype, ca. 1847. The Emily Dickinson Collection, Amherst College Archives & Special Collections. Gift of Millicent Todd Bingham, 1956, 1956.002.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents the North American premiere of Silencio Blanco's

SILENCIO BLANCO
CHIFLÓN, EL SILENCIO DEL CARBÓN

January 19-22, 2017

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents the North American premiere of Silencio Blanco's dramatic production of Chiflón, El Silencio del Carbón (Chiflón, Silence of the Coal), based in part on the writings by distinguished Chilean author Baldomero Lillo. Devised over two years during trips to the mining town of Lota in Chile, Chiflón confronts the intertwined histories of mining and the labor class.  The performance follows a young miner, forced to leave his home after a coal mine collapses. His only chance to keep working is to head to the area of Chiflón de Diablo, known as one of the most dangerous places a miner can work in Chile. Chiflón features hand-constructed marionettes, and is performed with a minimal sonic score and no dialogue so as to connect with audiences through a common theatrical language without cultural, age, or social barriers. Silencio Blanco's Chiflón, El Silencio del Carbón takes place January 19-22, 2017 at MCA Stage, and opens the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival.

Based in Santiago, Chile, the artists from Silencio Blanco are known for their handmade puppets, modeled using newspaper. In the montage, human sensations are represented through everyday situations and familiar gestural movements, telling a universal story of humanity in the face of adversity. Bunraku and marionette puppeteers create a powerful illusion that their puppets are human characters.

The company was formed in 2010 by media artists Santiago Tobar and Dominga Gutiérrez, who met while students at the legendary Theater School of the University of Chile. The current group is made up of seven puppet artists and sound artist-composer Ricardo Pacheco. They work collaboratively and to date have created three full-length works, De PapelPescador, andChiflón, employing puppets and more recently, film. Tobar serves as artistic director and head puppet maker. Prior to forming Silencio Blanco with Gutiérrez, Tobar was master puppeteer with Compañía Teatro Milagros, collaborating with artistic director-designer Aline Kuppenheim in the company's award-winning multimedia works El Capote and Sobre la Cuerda Floja (Over the Tightrope).

TICKET INFORMATION

Chiflón, El Silencio del Carbón runs 50 minutes and takes place Thursday-Saturday, January 19-21, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, January 22, at 3 pm. Tickets are $30. Tickets are available at the MCA Box Office at 312.397.4010 or www.mcachicago.org.

Interesting Basalt Metate Jaguar Barakat Gallery

Basalt Metate in the form of Jaguar
6.375 inches (16.2cm) high x 9.5 inches (24.1cm) wide
1st Century AD to 5th Century AD

This exquisite ceremonial metate was the most important ritual object of its time. Serving as a special
purpose, high-status grave offering, its function as a metate was secondary to its form. There is no
evidence of its use as a grinding surface, for the rough interior area of the stone bowl has not been
smoothed by the use of a mano. In fact, this powerful object, when placed in a tomb, represented both
elite control over food production and the promise of rebirth and new life.

The jaguar form of the metate is almost modern in its dynamism. Its head and tail are incised with a
geometric pattern, perhaps representing the animal's spots. The long tail, which curves to the side and
attaches itself to the back leg, gives an appearance of swift side-to-side movement. The fierce looking
N- shaped incisors and teeth, coupled with the curved shape of the legs makes one expect to see the
animal move forward, adding an attribute of life to this stone feline. The creative artistry evidenced in this
piece and other ceremonial metates of its time contributed to the creation of the first freestanding
sculpture in the region. The legacy of this jaguar continues into the present for its power and beauty is
still a joy to behold.

Design Miami has a banner turnout 2016

DESIGN MIAMI/ ACHIEVES RECORD ATTENDANCE AND CONFIRMS SIGNIFICANT INSTITUTIONAL ACQUISITIONS, WITH REFRESHED FAIR LAYOUT AND ROBUST NEW PROGRAMMING

Highest footfall ever at Design Miami. Significantly broadened collector base, delivering sales across historic and contemporary galleries Refreshed layout with large public entrance plaza, glass facade,  and re-imagined floor plan. Two large-scale donations of fair content made to local institutions

Miami Beach, December 2016 - Design Miami/ staged its most successful edition - its twelfth, this past week - with a record 37,900 collectors and visitors to see its offering from the world’s leading design galleries. Thirty-one galleries exhibited, five of which were first time participants and nine of which were founding galleries, returning for their twelfth turn. This 2016 edition also saw increased attendance by ultra high net worth clientele.

Rodman Primack, Chief Creative Officer of Design Miami/, voiced, “We reached a certain stride this edition that a lot of collectors and gallerists felt strongly. The mix of historic and contemporary in the program and the quality of the design satellites and collaborations drove attendance and sales to a very exciting height.”

The collector base is broadening as well:

"The vast majority of our clients here are art collectors now. More than ever before there is an acknowledgment that design is as conceptual and intellectual as contemporary art, but over and above that, you live with it. You use it,” said Zesty Meyers, Principal of R & Company gallery, based in New York, in response to the large influx of art collectors through the fair this year.

Notable Attendees/
Some of the notable attendees of this year’s edition of Design Miami/ included return visitors Leonardo DiCaprio; Elle Macpherson; Martha Stewart; Donna Karan; Calvin Klein; Neil Barrett; Stefano Tonchi; Vito Schnabel; André Balazs; along with Calvin Harris; Virgil Abloh; Emily Ratajkowski; will.i.am; Travis Scott; Derek Blasberg; Thom Browne, Cecilia Dean and James Kaliardos; artists John Baldessari; Daniel Arsham and Urs Fischer; dealers Richard Sachs; Dominique Levy, Tico Mugrabi and Stellan Holm; Tim Jeffries; collectors Jean Pigozzi; Aby Rosen; Iran Issa Khan; Susie and Walid Wahab; architects and designers Fernando Romero; Fabio Novembre; Jean Nouvel; Bjarke Ingels; Arik Levy; Julie Hillman; Robert Stillin; Cliff Fong; Yves Béhar; as well as Princess Friyal of Jordan; and Mayor Levine of Miami Beach.

Gallery Program/
Sales were high and widespread across the fair, ranging from contemporary work by young designers to rare vintage pieces with distinguished provenance. New York’s Friedman Benda sold all works by Misha Kahn, among other works by Wendell Castle, Chris Schanck and the Campana Brothers. Paris-based Patrick Seguin was successful in his presentation of limited Jean Prouvé and Jean Royère commissions, with several pieces from the Royère vignette sold to important collectors. LAFFANOUR - Galerie Downtown of Paris sold several works, including a tapestry and standing lamp by Le Corbusier. Collectors and journalists were excited by Jousse Entreprise’s presentation, with Maria Pergay’s Ring Chair sold to American collectors; and finally, first-time Miami participant Salon 94 sold every work by Gaetano Pesce presented in a solo exhibition at its stand.

Acquisitions by important design institutions The Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Mint Museum transpired, adding to their collections with works from Galerie VIVID with a Verner Panton chair and carpet by Christie Van Der Haak and Snythesis lights by Tom Price at Victor Hunt Designart Dealer.

Annie Carlano, Senior Curator of Craft, Design & Fashion at The Mint Museum commented on this year's fair:

"The individual galleries seemed better than ever this year, both in terms of objects presented and booth layout.  The flow between 20th and 21st century design felt more organic than usual as a result of this.  Design Miami/ remains a critical venue for networking with the global design community, research, and is a primary source for major acquisitions.   Project spaces like Design Curio and Design Visionary provided more imaginative and immersive experiences, as was SHoP architects 3-D printed structure."

Design Collaborations/
Design Miami/ long-time partners, Audi, Maison Perrier-Jouët, and FENDI returned, each with standout projects as part of the Design Collaborations program. Audi presented “The extra hour” by LEGO, inspired by the Audi RS 7 self-piloted driving concept. FENDI showed one of the fair’s most instagrammed spaces, THE HAPPY ROOM, a modular VIP lounge which will continue on in a global tour. Maison Perrier-Jouët presented Strand Garden by American artist and architect Andrew Kudless, inspired by nature and the brand’s Art Nouveau heritage, while Louis Vuitton made its debut on the fair floor with new additions to its Objets Nomades design collection.

Another highlight was Dean & DeLuca’s Stage, a prototype of a chef-led fast food concept, which took the place as sole café at the fair, nearly doubling anticipated footfall and leaving an impactful impression for its striking design by architect Ole Scheeren. Fair newcomer Compac, the established Spanish luxury surface maker debuted ICE, a collaboration with Paris-based artist and designer Arik Levy. Finally, Airbnb was a lively presence with Sobremesa, designed by Mexico City-based Pedro&Juana, an evolving and collaborative space which featured a daily celebration of the Mexican tradition of sharing time and company, lingering around the table after a meal. Airbnb's installation will also live on following Design Miami/, through a donation of all materials used in the 'Sobremesa' project to  design students at Miami’s Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH).

DESIGN MIAMI/
Design Miami/ is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs in Miami, USA each December and Basel, Switzerland each June, Design Miami/ has become the premier venue for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating collectible design. The Fondation Beyeler presents Maze of Quotes by Toilet Paper at Art Basel in Miami Beach from December 1–4, 2016.

Fondation Beyeler
Maze of Quotes: A Project by Toilet Paper for the Fondation Beyeler at
Art Basel in Miami Beach

Maze of Quotes by Toilet Paper
Maze of Quotes by Toilet Paper

The Fondation Beyeler presents Maze of Quotes by Toilet Paper at Art Basel in Miami Beach from December 1–4, 2016. Toilet Paper, the collaborative magazine project by artists Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, transforms Fondation Beyeler’s entire exhibition space into three distinct settings. Elaborately wallpapered and fully furnished, Maze of Quotes presents a lavish, fantastical environment of consumerism and sexuality, from chandeliers and toilets to gold drapes and tin pots.

Maze of Quotes

You think it’s easy being the boss?
Tony Soprano

After the successful 'Super Ball' Gala in Basel, Switzerland, this summer, directed and staged by Toilet Paper aka Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari the Guerrilla Boys of the art world, the Fondation Beyeler was so happy to be abused by this undercover organization that it commissioned a new project by them for Art Basel in Miami Beach. Like with stroboscopic lights, a warning sign should be placed in front of it. In fact Cattelan and Ferrari have created a beautiful hallucination that will defeat any electoral hangover or post-presidential gloom. Reversing the menacing sentence affixed on top of the door in Dante’s Inferno “Abandon all hope – You Who Enter Here,” on top of the door of the Beyeler’s space we could imagine to read “Any lost hope you will find it here.”

The installation is the lost-and-found counter of imagination where black and white and minimalism have been banned for good. Consumerism, seduction, sexuality are having a ball and you will have it too, as long as you will let loose all of your formal infrastructures and repressed desires. Since their unlikely collaboration Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari have been two more or less normal people. One as an artist locked on the success track, the other as an experienced fashion photographer in great demand. Under the hat of Toilet Paper they both forgo the stability of their roles to embark in the creation of an utterly new grammar thinner than Warhol’s already thin surface. All of their production is a spin-off of Toilet Paper, which has been transformed into a kite pulled by the most strong wind of coolness. Even the much-talked about gold toilet  “America,” Cattelan’s scary anticipation of Trump’s advent installed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, is the result of Toilet Paper’s relentless thinking tank that these two artists have put in motion and that now seem incapable of stopping. Unconsciously quoting feminist artists from the 70’s such Martha Rosler or Sandy Skoglund, Cattelan and Ferrari succeed in exposing the vaporized political and social zeitgeist of today, grounding the project and transforming it in a subtle commentary of the condition of our present. With their pseudo-surreal attitude they bring to mind one of many of John Cage’s aphorisms: “Going to the North Pole? Then take Miró with you. ‘It seems to me I‘ve known you all my life.’ The war. Unknown painting. A night spent in laughter: omelet that fell on the floor.” Meaning? Ask Toilet Paper. That’s how they go about life.

–Francesco Bonami

Toilet Paper partnered with Italian design brands Gufram and Seletti for the installation.

MIAMI BEACH | DECEMBER 1 | 2016 Art Basel announces Philipp Kaiser as the new curator of Art Basel's Public sector in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH | DECEMBER 1 | 2016

Art Basel announces Philipp Kaiser as the new curator of Art Basel's Public sector in Miami Beach

Commencing with the 2017 edition, Philipp Kaiser, independent curator and critic, will curate the Public sector of Art Basel in Miami Beach, succeeding Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator of Public Art Fund, New York, who curated the sector from 2013 to 2016. Situated in Miami Beach’s Collins Park, the Public sector each year presents site-specific sculptures and performances by both established and emerging artists from across the globe.

Philipp Kaiser is an independent curator and critic, who has previously served as the Director of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2012-2014); Senior Curator and Curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2007-2012); and Head of Contemporary Art at Kunstmuseum Basel / Museum für Gegenwartskunst (2002-2007). Swiss-born and Los Angeles-based, Kaiser has curated numerous noteworthy exhibitions throughout his career and was recently announced as the curator of ‘Women of Venice – Carol Bove and Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler’ at the Swiss Pavilion of the 57th Venice Biennale (2017). He is also curating the inaugural exhibition at The Marciano Foundation in Los Angeles next year. In addition to his curatorial work, Kaiser has lectured extensively on the subject of art history, edited publications and written catalogue essays, reviews and articles throughout his career.

Noah Horowitz, Director Americas of Art Basel, commented: 'We are delighted to welcome Philipp Kaiser as the new curator for the Public sector of Art Basel in Miami Beach and are hugely grateful to Nicholas Baume for the significant contributions he has made to the sector over the past four years. Philipp Kaiser’s extensive curatorial background and deep knowledge of contemporary artistic practice will bring an exciting new vision and global perspective to this dynamic sector.'

On his appointment as curator of Public, Kaiser said: 'I have always found Public to be a fascinating sector of the show in Miami Beach because of the opportunities it presents to artists and galleries, and am honored to have the chance to build upon the successes achieved by my predecessors in this role. I look forward to the challenge of curating a thematic outdoor exhibition that transforms and re-envisions Collins Park, and engages Art Basel’s audiences, as well as the broader Miami Beach community.'
