Inspiring Global Picture Book - A Day in the World

A Day in the World
ISBN: 978-1-60887-146-9
Hardcover | $50.00 | 512 Pages
November 2012
Inspiring Global Picture Book, A Day in the World, Is the First Time Capsule of Its Kind

SAN RAFAEL, CA, November 2012 - On May 15th, 2012, people from around the globe picked up their cameras to record their lives, and A Day in the World is the result. This inspiring project, the first time capsule of its kind, is an extraordinary worldwide account of an ordinary day, celebrating diversity, connections, and the human spirit with vibrant imagery.

Professionals and amateur shutterbugs alike are featured in this beautiful edition, the most comprehensive photographic documentation of daily life ever made. Based on the philosophy that everyone's life matters, contributors come from areas as varied as the earth itself: farmers, fishermen, office workers, and award-winning photojournalists. Tribal areas and urban sprawl, intimate portraits and riotous events, A Day in the World captures a global scope with the candor only a photograph can capture. Participants utilized whatever photographic means was at their disposal to document their lives, from crisp high-tech point-and-shoots to cell phones and old-fashioned cameras, creating a touchingly varied perspective. This book presents the first global photography project that incorporates top talent with the general public.

The brainchild of the movement Aday.org, this unique project celebrates the power of photography to encourage cultural understanding. An interactive site was the hub for the project, and then, an international jury selected the best one thousand images. Ultimately, A Day in the World is not only an around-the-globe ticket for the armchair traveler, it is an invaluable record of the people on our planet, sure to spark reflections on humankind for generations to come.

Expressions of Humankind: A Day in the World launched from Aday.org, a branch of the foundation Expressions of Humankind. The foundation supports scientific research and education focused on the photographic image and the written word. The aim is to inspire creative reflections on humanity, by experiencing global perspectives. The foundation's council includes Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Sir Richard Branson, singer/songwriter Robyn and a host of other luminaries and advocates for the project.

Fictitious Truths - Exercises in Realism

Eric Doeringer    Carol Hepper    Sarah McDougald Kohn    Liz Nielsen    Ryan Roa    Henry Sanchez    Arlene Shechet

In 1943, employed as a dive-bomber for the German military, Joseph Beuys was shot down by Russian flak in a snowstorm over the Crimea region—and one of the art world’s greatest fictions was born. Indeed, throughout history, the cloak and dagger of illusion has reigned in the world of art. In the momentary slippage between image/text, the slightest shift of a frame, or the interaction of subject with object, a world of possibilities presents itself.

In probing the limits of visibility we have found that most things are in fact, unseen. As we feel for it in shadows and hidden corners, reality tauntingly leers back at us. How we choose to answer that challenge is both an exercise in personal fortitude and creative flexibility. Such action’s residual objects, the fleeting anchors of a distant reality, are those of another world – one where the organic fuses with the mechanical, nature and technology coalesce and fact irreparably merges with fiction. The works in Fictitious Truths live within that intermediary space, in its flexibility, subjectivity and potential for alternatives.  Culling from a variety of mediums—sculpture and photography, video and installation—the conceptual nature of the work presented examines such topics as the exploration of personal identity, the analysis of consumer culture (and by extension the art market), and the re-creation of political histories. It is not only the blurring of space and time that interests these artists but also the notion of shifting focus—from what we perceive to be around us to what is actually present—for if we are destined to fumble ceaselessly in the dark, a flashlight is always a good idea.

-Kara L. Rooney

Extraordinary Close-up Photographs Reveal and Amazing New Perspective on Seeds, One of the Smallest Units of Life

Seeds
Time Capsules of Life
Rob Kesseler & Wolfgang Stuppy
Preface by Prince Charles HRH The Prince of Wales
ISBN: 978-1-60887-111-7
Hardcover | $35.00 | 264 Pages
October 2012
Extraordinary Close-up Photographs Reveal and Amazing New Perspective on Seeds, One of the Smallest Units of Life

SAN RAFAEL, CA, October 2012 - The power of seeds as small pods that are self-contained life forces is as fascinating as their artfully functional structure. The sublime images in Seeds afford an unprecedented view into a most astonishing microcosm, where even the tiniest examples are exquisitely beautiful and sophisticated.

Seeds are the most complex organs plants produce. The first seeds appeared some 360 million years ago. Since then they have developed into highly sophisticated propagules that have enabled plants to dominate the earth's surface and conquer almost every possible habitat, from the Antarctic to the hottest deserts. The diversity of shapes and sizes encountered in seeds is nearly endless and ranges from the impressive Seychelles nut at 44 pounds to the dustlike seeds of the orchids. No matter how small, packed into every seed is the complete genetic information needed to give rise to a new plant, whether it is a tiny herb or a giant rainforest tree. True time capsules of life, seeds may travel thousands of miles and, if necessary, wait for hundreds of years before germinating.

Seeds constitutes an essential source book not only for those fascinated by the natural world, but also for artists, designers, and anyone interested in the development of biological structures. Scientists and critics around the world have called visual artist Rob Kesseler's work "mystifying," "astounding," and "awe-inspiring." Seeds' majestic bright, popping colors, mesmerizing geometry, and accessible text make it a coffee-table treasure. This brand-new edition features a preface by His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, who is an avid conservationist.

Wolfgang Stuppy is the seed morphologist at the Millennium Seed Bank Project, an international initiative dedicated to seed conservation managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He holds a doctorate in comparative seed morphology and anatomy and lives in London.

Visual artist Rob Kesseler is a professor, lecturer, and a NESTA Fellow at Kew. His artwork was featured in solo exhibitions at the V&A Museum (London) and the City Museum and Art Gallery (Stoke), among others. He lives in London.

His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, serves as president of the Prince's Charities, the largest multicause charitable enterprise in the UK. This group of twenty not-for-profit organizations actively works to improve education, public health, and the environment.

Lectures by Bakhyt Kenjeev - Date Correction!

MoRA_Logo_2011

Date Correction: Tuesday , October 2  at 7pm

Lectures by Bakhyt Kenjeev

Cocktail reception

The Museum of Russian Art invites you to attend a gala poetry reading/discussion by the notable Russian poet Bakhyt Kenjeev and an art exhibition at:

The Museum of Russian Art,
80 Grand Street Jersey City, NJ 07302.
The museum is open Thursday - Sunday 2-6 PM and by appointment
from September 20 - October 4

Mr. Kenjeev, one of Russia's leading traditionalist poets, will lead two interactive discussions on Russian poetry, with topics including "Poetry and the Internet" and "Poetry Amateur and Professional."

This poetry evening coincides with the prize exhibition of the Winners of the 2012 International Art Festival, which opened at MoRA earlier this month. The artists whose works are on view include Russian-American painter Nikolai Zalevsky; art photographer Zeno Chen from the Republic of China (Taiwan); and Joan Hus and Benjamin Sack, who shared the Graphics award. These artists will be featured in an article about the competition scheduled for an upcoming issue of Fine Art Magazine. A reception will follow.

Bakhyt Kenjeev is a leading Russian poet and prize-winning author of twelve poetry books published in the USA, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Bakhyt Kenjeev is a frequent participant in major international festivals and currently lives in Montreal, New York, and Moscow.
Among Russian poets of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Bakhyt Kenzheev enjoys a reputation as a traditionalist. Predominantly lyrical, his verse touches upon a wide range of modern phenomena. He is renowned for his ability to represent mundane life in an intensely Romantic style, creating a mystical dimension to human existence. Many critics acknowledge that his poetry incorporates the European and Central Asian mythological traditions as well as specifically Russian literary trends. Projecting traditional imagery on the minutiae of contemporary life, Kenzheev's poetry harks back to the Russian rhyming styles most brilliantly represented by figures such as Aleksandr  Pushkin, Aleksandr  Blok, and Osip  Mandel'shtam.
We will honor the winners of our inaugural juried competition.
These outstanding artists represent diverse backgrounds and a wide variety of artistic styles:
 The exhibition will feature:
Zeno Chen (Photography); Nicolas Zalevsky (Painting);
Joan Hus and Benjamin Sack (tied in Graphics).
Each artist will present a solo exhibition featuring the winning works and some additional works representing career highlights.

Liao Yibai: MADE IN CHINA

Liao Yibai: MADE IN CHINA
October 18, 2012 - November 24, 2012

Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to present MADE IN CHINA, Chinese artist Liao Yibai's third solo show at the gallery. Inspired by China's lucrative fake antique industry, twenty-two hand welded stainless steel sculptures displayed on "antiqued" pedestals tell the artist's version of China's rich history through three unique series: Fake Antiques, Fake Evidence, and Legends. The title MADE IN CHINA is not only a reference to the origin of the works and the traditional Chinese objets d'art that inspired them, but also to the ubiquitous "MADE IN CHINA" tag found on the majority of goods imported into the United States. By producing innovative fakes, Yibai exposes the value of truth.

Liao Yibai
/ Dragon Vase Earth / 2011 / Stainless steel
38 x 23 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches (96.52 x 59.69 x 59.69 cm)

Yibai replicates treasures from the Ming, Qing, Yuan, and other dynasties as he marries ancient forms with pressing contemporary issues in his Fake Antiques. Embellished with playful characters from his previous series, often donning slippers and boxing gloves, large vessels such as Ding, Dragon Vase Ocean, and Dragon Vase Earth are emblazoned with nuclear clouds, swine flu viruses, and acid rain in a beautiful visual tango with traditional lotus and dragon motifs. Chairman's Chair, a life-sized throne riddled with arrows, is the artist's wry summation of 5,000 years of China's history and its constant struggle for power.

Liao Yibai / Chairman's Chair / Detail view / 2011 / Stainless steel
55 5/8 x 52 1/2 x 65 1/2 inches (141.29 x 133.35 x 166.37 cm)

Yibai's ironic story telling continues with his Fake Evidence presented in the form of dragon and panda eggs, skulls, and dinosaur fossils. In Panda's Egg, a cracked egg hatching a panda bear sits in an intricate nest of twigs, while Dinosaur's Fossil shows an entire family of dinosaurs tangled with diamonds. Alluding to the false sense of security one feels in accepting what is presented as factual archeological evidence, the artist goes to great lengths in attempting to prank future museum patrons.

Liao Yibai / Panda's Egg / 2012 / Stainless Steel
18 1/4 x 40 1/4 x 41 7/8 inches (46.36 x 102.24 x 106.36 cm)

Liao Yibai / Dinosaur's Fossil / 2011 / Stainless steel
34 3/4 x 54 x 22 1/4 inches (88.27 x 137.16 x 56.52 cm)

Parrot, Chinese Legend and Machine Gun belong the Legends series, in which Yibai recontextualizes well-known Chinese mythology to tell cautionary tales, like the story of the emperor's famed talking pet parrot that has outlived the emperor and is passed onto the emperor's son. The parrot serves as a lone witness for the past emperor's acts, both good and bad. In an effort to silence the truth, the emperor's surviving son chains and binds the parrot's mouth shut in a literal attempt at censorship. Chinese Legend, a large Ming style cabinet, sets the stage for great myths and tales, such as the adventure of the Monkey King, the ill-fated story of the Butterfly Lovers, the building of the Great Wall and the Cult of Mao, to name but a few.  It is a gleaming tribute to the splendors and trials of China, as well her majestic landscape that is now under threat.

Liao Yibai / Parrot / 2012 / Stainless steel
32 5/8 x 33 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches (82.87 x 85.09 x 67.31 cm)

Liao Yibai / Chinese Legend / 2012 / Stainless steel and copper
75 3/4 x 36 1/8 x 12 1/4 inches (192.41 x 91.76 x 31.12 cm)

"Liao's museological hoax is the latest in his irreverent, irresistible series of 'Real Fakes' that, coming full circle, end as they begin as independent works of art, rather than fake."

-Lilly Wei. "The Real Fake Annals of Liao Yibai," in MADE IN CHINA catalog

Liao Yibai graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1997. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout China, United States, and Europe.  Yibai currently lives and works in Chongqing, China with his wife and daughter.

A fully illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibition.
