BARD’S FISHER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE

BARD’S FISHER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE

American Ballet Theatre Orchestra to Accompany World-Class Dance Performance With Music by Henry Purcell, Philip Glass, and Antonín Dvořák
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts presents American Ballet Theatre (ABT) on Friday, October 5and Saturday, October 6 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 at 2 p.m. Showcasing the work of some of the foremost American choreographers, the program features Antony Tudor’s The Leaves Are FadingJosé Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane, and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room. The performances will be accompanied by the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra. Tickets are $20, $30, $40, and $50. To purchase tickets call the Fisher Center box office at 845-758-900, or go to fishercenter.bard.edu/.
“Once in a not too frequent while, there comes along an evening that reminds you why you’re in the theater in the first place, and why dance is not a luxury or a frill but a necessity of life. Such an evening was American Ballet Theatre.”
Washington Post
Antony Tudor’s The Leaves Are Fading was created for American Ballet Theatre and is a haunting meditation of youthful romance and time’s bittersweet passing. For this work, Tudor has chosen primarily from Antonín Dvořák’s little-known work, Cypresses for string quartet, together with other chamber music for strings written by the composer in the 1880s. Set to Dvořák’s ravishing score, this was one of Tudor’s last ballets, and it remains one of the major works in the choreographer’s remarkable canon. It was given its world premiere on July 17, 1975, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, New York City.
Considered José Limón’s masterwork, The Moor’s Pavane beautifully distills in one act the passion and dramatic arc of Shakespeare’s Othello. Though subtitled “Variations on a Theme of Othello,” this dance is not intended as a choreographic version of Shakespeare’s play. In the form of a pavane and other dances of the high Renaissance, the legend is told of the hapless Moor, his wrongfully suspected wife, the Moor’s treacherous friend, and the friend’s wife. Performed to a stately Renaissance court dance, this psychological thriller inevitably reaches its heartbreaking climax as the noble Othello succumbs to Iago’s treachery. The four characters portray the tragedy of Everyman, and the ballet is timeless in its implications. Limón chose the music of Henry Purcell, arranged by Simon Sadoff, from “Abdelazer,” “The Gordian Knot Untied,” and the pavane from “Pavane and Chaconne for Strings.” The Moor’s Pavane was first performed at the Palmer Auditorium, Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, at the Second American Dance Festival on August 17, 1949, and danced by José Limón (The Moor), Betty Jones (The Moor’s Wife), Lucas Hoving (His Friend), and Pauline Koner (His Friend’s Wife). It was first performed by American Ballet Theatre on June 27, 1970 at the New York State Theater and danced by Bruce Marks (The Moor), Royes Fernandez (His Friend), Sallie Wilson (His Friend’s Wife), and Toni Lander (The Moor’s Wife).
Accompanied by music by Philip Glass, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room is a marathon of exhilarating locomotion. From precise geometric patterns to seemingly free-form motion, Tharp’s rigorous choreography demands something akin to Olympic perfection. First performed by Twyla Tharp Dance on August 26, 1986, at the Ravinia Festival, Highland Park, Illinois, it entered the repertory of American Ballet Theatre on December 10, 1988, at Segerstrom Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, California.
American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancers performing are Roberto Bolle, Herman Cornejo, Marcelo Gomes, Julie Kent, Veronika Part, Xiomara Reyes, Polina Semionova, Hee Seo, andCory StearnsKevin McKenzie is the company’s artistic director.

Whitney Houston: The Voice, the Music, the Inspiration

The Voice, the Music, the Inspiration

Whitney Houston: The Voice, the Music, the Inspiration Is A Tender and Truthful Inside and Outside The Studio Portrait Of The Beloved Pop Superstar

SAN RAFAEL, CA, September 11, 2012 - Whitney Houston was one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide. The beloved pop icon remains the only artist to have seven consecutive U.S. chart-topping singles, and is the most awarded female act of all time. Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana has said, "About our sister Whitney Houston, my mom said, 'Mijo, my son, her voice is the voice of a legion of angels. Not just one, but a legion of angels.'"

It is for Whitney's legion of loving fans, several thousand of whom crowded outside the church where author Narada Michael Walden attended her funeral service in February 2012, that he is now telling the story of the fabulously gifted artist, and caring, charismatic woman he knew during her peak years. Walden sat in the cockpit alongside Whitney while her career skyrocketed, producing many of the hits that today comprise her musical legacy, among them, "How Will I Know," "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and "One Moment In Time."

His intimate stories of their unforgettable times together, both inside and outside the recording studio, paint a portrait of a smart, funny, compassionate woman whose striking physical beauty was matched by her inner strength and justifiable self-confidence. As the cousin of Dionne Warwick, and daughter of Cissy Houston, Whitney was able to draw on her lineage to make an unprecedented impact. And, at the same time, she and Narada enjoyed a rock-solid bond, fostered through their shared musical and spiritual backgrounds.

Whitney Houston: The Voice, the Music, the Inspiration is a candid, poignant, and celebratory companion to the Whitney Houston Greatest Hits Album due this fall. Superstar producer/musician Quincy Jones, winner of 27 Grammys, including a 1991 Grammy Legend Award, has praised the book saying, "This book tells it like it was! The work that she and my young brother, Narada, did together made our world a better place, and that's not only because of the fabulous songs, but also their chemistry in the studio and Whitney's ability to sing from her soul. Narada tells us the truth about her sweetness, professionalism, and musical genius."

Narada Michael Walden is an Emmy and Grammy-award winning producer and songwriter for artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Steve Winwood, Ray Charles, Wynonna Judd, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Barbara Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones and of course, Whitney Houston. He has earned equal acclaim as a recording and performing artist. In 2012 he will release his solo album Thunder. He lives in San Rafael, CA.

The New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty works of nonfiction, Richard Buskin's credits include biographies on Sheryl Crow, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe, and Princess Diana. As a journalist specializing in pop culture, music, film, television, and sociopolitical affairs, his work has appeared in Billboard, Playboy, Spin, The New York Post, and numerous other publications around the world. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

Ground Arts - Forward. Rewind. Repeat

Ground Arts Organization proudly presents Forward. Rewind. Repeat, a group exhibition featuring five artists of different disciplines from the east coast. The title obviously speaks to video, but also the act of mental and physical artistic process.
Featuring Bianca Pratorius, Elizabeth Stehling, Caitlin Peluffo, Scott Malbaurn, and Charles Evans, this exhibition investigates the use of repetition in both process and outcome. These artists investigate the use of repetition in their work conceptually, or through repetitive movements and actions physically. These practices may yield patterns or rhythm in their work as a compositional strategy, or may be repeated actions generating consistently different results.
Ground Arts is thrilled to partner with “The Art Start Family on “The Home Project.” Art Start is a NYC non-profit that for 20 years has run creative arts workshops with youth in homeless shelters and alternative to incarceration programs.
Ground Arts and Art Start will collaborate with the youth to help them create works of art inspired by the theme “Home,”. An exhibition of the work will be curated by Ground Arts alongside contemporary NYC Artists. The proceeds from this show will go to securing a space, or “Home”, in Chelsea for Art Start’s workshops with at-risk youth.

Ground is a collaborative project with Rogue Space | Chelsea, FilmsOnArtists, and Studio Spoken.

JUSTICE FOR SALE
Friday, 9/21/12
12:00 pm
Justice For Sale follows the young, courageous Congolese human rights lawyer Claudine Tsongo who refuses to accept that justice is indeed “For Sale” in her country. When she investigates the case of a soldier convicted of rape, she becomes convinced his trial was unfair and uncovers a system where the basic principles of law are ignored—and when the system fails, everyone becomes a victim. The documentary not only provides a glimpse into the failings of the Congolese judicial system but also raises questions about the role of the international community and non-governmental organizations in reforming it.

Saturday, 9/22/12

A single mother in Paris, Bernadette tried hard to give her daughters everything. She is thrilled when her eldest, Elza, the first college graduate in the family, completes her master's degree. However, Elza  breaks her mother's heart by running away to their native Guadeloupe in search of a distant childhood memory: the father she barely remembers. This feature debut by writer/director Mariette Monpierre offers an unusual insider's view of lush island culture as she captures the passion and contradictions of this family.
