The Many Faces of Richard Gachot

logo banner

Coming Soon.....
The Many Faces
of Richard Gachot
August 28 - September 25
 collage
Found Object Sculpture by Richard Gachot.  Clockwise from left:  Many Faces, 1996 - oil filter, flour sifters, plumbing parts, kitchen gadgets, bike and wood wheels, and electric heater parts.  Mademoiselle, 2003 - carved and painted wood acorn finial, ribbon, boot trees, lard bucket and cake pan.
Art Deco Man, 1996 - ice bucket, coffee pot, heat fin, gear, glass and found objects.

This exhibition brings together an extraordinary collection of major works that feature found object sculptor Richard Gachot's signature style.  Gachot's capacity for assemblage and mechanical invention fuses with whimsy and wit, producing works that are ironic, at times searing, indictments of common foibles, and abuses of the environment, real estate development, and recurring
patterns of behavior or belief.

"From the Ashes"

A Ceramics Art Exhibition Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

Opening Reception at the Art League of Long Island:
  Sunday August 28, 2pm - 4pm

Presented in partnership with the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association

A group of art educators from Suffolk County, under the direction of raku artist and Art League Faculty member, Gina Mars, have created a series of ceramic pieces symbolizing the regeneration, restoration, and recovery since that tragic day. The raku process uses a combination of fire and smoke to transform the ordinary surface of a clay piece into a work of art with dramatic bursts of color and texture.

Part One runs October 9 - 30 for artists whose last names begin with the letters A - L; Part Two runs November 6 - 27 for artists whose last names begin with the letters M - Z. The exhibit will be juried by Dawn Lee, painter, printmaker, Chairperson of the Art Department at St. Joseph's College, and curator at the Omni Gallery in Uniondale. Deadline for submission is September 23.
pictureArtists and Craftspeople are invited to apply for a space at the Art League of Long Island's 48th Holiday Fine Arts & Crafts Fair. The juried fair takes place in the Art League's spacious gallery and art studios December 3 & 4, 10am - 5pm.  Download prospectus here.

pictureThe second annual Huntington Awareness Day Parade and Fair to be held on Saturday, September 17th in Huntington Station will have two new elements added this year as part of the Town of Huntington's Public Art Initiative, providing new opportunities for artists, as well as for public participation.  A Chalk Flood of street drawings will offer community-wide opportunities for creative expression celebrating the Awareness Day theme of "Unity in the Community," while a Huntington Kinetic Sculpture Competition will add a new element to the Parade up New York Avenue.
The Chalk Flood, which will take place in designated portions of Huntington's northwest LIRR commuter parking lot on New York Avenue (from Railroad Avenue to Church Street), will have two components:
    • Communal Drawing Area - a space where any member of the community can make a positive creative contribution to the celebration of "Unity in the Community."  Just bring your creativity!  We'll supply all the necessary materials.
    • Featured Street Artists Gallery - a juried space where only those artists accepted in advance through submission of an application will be assigned a portion of the limited space available.  An application form can be downloaded from the Huntington Awareness Day website:  www.huntingtonawareness.org Applications must be received by noon on August 24, 2011.  Tips on street painting techniques can also be found at this web location.
The Huntington Kinetic Sculpture Competition was inspired by Kinetic Sculpture Races held annually in Baltimore, California, and other locations nationwide.  While the Huntington event, will not include either the "race" or the "all-terrain" elements of these other Kinetic Sculpture events, we're sure that it will offer ample opportunity for display of both creative imagination and engineering skills, as well as lots of fun for spectators and participants alike!  Competitors will join other Huntington Awareness Day Parade participants in traversing the 1.3 mile Parade route in their unique human-powered kinetic sculptures.  Judges will award prizes in a variety of competition categories in recognition of artistic creativity, engineering prowess, and expression of the Huntington Awareness Day theme - "Unity in the Community."  Those interested in entering this competition can download an application form and competition rules from the Huntington Awareness Day website:  www.huntingtonawareness.org Applications must be received by noon on September 7, 2011.  Tips on constructing a kinetic sculpture are also available on this website.
For further information on the Chalk Flood, the Huntington Kinetic Sculpture Competition or other Town of Huntington Public Art Initiative projects, contact John Coraor, Director of Cultural Affairs, at 631-351-3099 or via e-mail:  jcoraor@town.huntington.ny.us.
pictureArtists 50 and over who reside in Nassau County are invited to exhibit and sell paintings, photography, and wall handicrafts at the Glen Cove Senior Center's "Golden Gallery".  There will be a small reception at the beginning of each month for the chosen artist who is presenting their work.  For more information contact Lucy Van Horn at (516) 759-9610 or at lvanhorn@cityofglencoveny.org.
pictureThe Village Connection Magazine features works of local artists each month on its cover and invites Huntington area artists to submit artwork for consideration of front-page placement. Please email villageconnection@live.com a jpeg as well as a short write-up for inclusion on the contents page. Visit their site at www.villageconnectionmag.com

Michele Didier

mfc-michèle didier

SAVE THE DATE
OPENING OF MFC-MICHÈLE DIDIER IN PARIS ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2011

mfc-michèle didier focuses since 1987 on the production and on the publication of original works by contemporary artists. Playing the part of an intermediary between the artist and production’s professionals (printing, film industry, etc.), and with the continuing effort to keep intact the original project that the artists trust them, mfc-michèle didier produces artist books, installations, films and videos, thereby providing a genuine and multiplied work.
mfc-michèle didier is opening in September a store in Paris, a city where the actors of the art world (institutions and collectors) are particularly sensitive to the discipline of the artist's book. Located at 66 rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth in le Haut-Marais, it will offer the chance to present the publisher’s productions but it will also be a place of reflection on this specific art form. At the same time, it will give the opportunity to show the important role of ephemeras and published & multiplied works in contemporary art.
The grand opening will be held on September 10, 2011, with Claude Closky. There will be an exclusive preview of Inside a triangle, an artist's book containing a set of photographs taken around the world - Brazil, Russia, Australia, Iran, etc. – of roads and paths that seem to extend to infinity. Each view is framed very precisely. A road, starting from our feet, occupies exactly the whole bottom edge of the image, while the horizon where it moves towards is placed exactly on the upper edge of the image.
So far, mfc-michèle didier has worked with Dennis Adams, Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Samuel Bianchini, AA Bronson, Stanley Brouwn, Philippe Cazal, Claude Closky, Hannah Collins, David Cunningham, Charles de Meaux, Braco Dimitrijevic, Peter Downsbrough, Paul-Armand Gette, Liam Gillick, Joseph Grigely, Pierre Huyghe, On Kawara, Christian Marclay, Allan McCollum, John Miller, Jonathan Monk, Robert Morris, Antonio Muntadas, Philippe Parreno, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Hermann Pitz, Allen Ruppersberg, Joe Scanlan, Jim Shaw, Josh Smith, Lawrence Weiner, Christopher Wool…

Bill Carman

Carman PR header
NEW YORK, NY - Animazing Gallery welcomes the critically acclaimed painter Bill Carman to its SoHo gallery this fall for an exhibition, sale and artist's reception. Carman, an enigma in the contemporary art market, is influenced daily by almost every aspect of life; from the seemingly mundane details, to the intricate works of earlier masters. His paintings feature elements inspired by the fantastical and dark images of Hieronymus Bosch, and are executed with the precision of Albrecht Durer. Carman's sense of humor is evident in this collection of nearly 50 mixd-media pieces on copper, wood, and paper. With each minute and delicate detail, he reveals his talent and genius. His pieces are nebulous, skirting and defying traditional art genres.

"I live on the fringe of mainstream fantasy/sci-fi, dip a toe into surrealism, flirt with symbolism and even occasionally scratch the surface of mainstream illustration..." - Bill Carman (bio

RSVP is required for the artist's reception and exhibition unveiling from 6-9PM on Saturday October 22nd, 2011. The collection will be on display and for sale through November. Animazing Gallery is located at 54 Greene Street (at Broome). The exhibition is free and open to the public seven days a week; Monday-Saturday 10-7, Sunday 11-6. Contact 212-226-7374 or pr@animazing.com for details.

Carman won several awards from prestigious organizations such as Spectrum, the Society of Illustrators NY, the Greenwich Workshop and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. In 2002 he was invited to publish a children's book with Random House. He is currently a professor teaching illustration and drawing at Boise State University

"... I enter my lab where surfaces challenge and characters emerge who should probably never be born. But I keep releasing these things from my mind because it's my passion." - Bill Carman

ABOUT THE ARTIST | Bill Carman has worked as a designer, illustrator and art director at universities, ad agencies, publishers, and large corporations. Since graduating from BYU with a BFA in visual communication/illustration and later with an MFA in painting, he has consistently free-lanced and exhibited. Carman is currently a professor teaching illustration and drawing at Boise State University of the blue football field. Prior to this, he taught in and chaired the art department at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Bill Carman Inset

Carman is inspired by the imagination and figurative work of illustration and image-oriented work artists such as Ben Shahn, Brad Holland, Al Cober, Ian Miller and Dave McKean, Brian Froud, and Rockwell Kent.
