Fais-Moi L’Amour

Fais-Moi L’Amour

Diandra Forrest, Digital Giclée Print, 20x24

Charles Quiles
A Solo Exhibition

Exhibition Dates: May 1 - 24th, 2014
Opening Reception: May 1st, 6-9 PM

April 25, 2014 (New York, NY) – ArtNowNY is pleased to present the first ever solo exhibition of Charles Quiles, Fais-Mois L’Amour (Make Love to Me). The exhibition will survey the past 11 years of work by the noted photographer in over 20 photographs and one new video installation selected from his work in the fashion industry, as well as from the artist’s personal archive. There will be an opening reception for the artist at ArtNowNY (548 W 28th Street 2nd Floor, New York) from 6 to 9 PM.

Fais-Mois L’Amour is a deeply personal exhibition and ultimately a photographic diary from the artist. The video installation, débuted to the public for the first time in the show, lays bare his acknowledgment and acceptance of the end of a relationship. Roughly half of the photographs are similarly intimate, featuring some of his closest friends, lovers, and mentors that helped develop the young artist as an up-and-coming fashion photographer from Puerto Rico, such as the legendary Mariano Vivanco.

Presented alongside these loved ones are the models and famous faces, including Rajiv Surendra, the former Kendra Spears and current Princess Salwa Aga Khan, and Alejandro Salgueiro, who Quiles has worked with in his editorial work. The universally loved embodiments that define current standards of beauty and sex appeal are keenly present in Quiles’s iconic style of photography. A body of work that pays homage to the early masters of the genre, such as Avedon and Ritts, Quiles’s photos address the faces, attitudes and styles that make up the contemporary urban landscape.

Fais-Mois L’Amour plays to both ends of a spectrum that spans the intimates in our own lives, the platonically adored and the carnally pursued; a love letter to the flesh, muscles and memories that make up Quiles’s passionate dedication to his art. The product of the artist as a young man as he attempts to capture it all, Fais-Mois L’Amour is an exhibition over a decade in the making, presented with unabashed pride and glory.

Katy Jade Dobson

Wildlife Artist / Oil Painter

Katy Jade Dobson

UK based artist - Age 25

My paintings are opulent and exaggerative in colour and expression of movement and atmosphere. I do not shy away from colour but use it as an emphasis on the beauty and ferocity of wildlife and nature. I follow my bliss in oil painting and the need to continue is inherent and determined. My love of wildlife is an obsession of true awe and appreciation. My work is a release of a love for ethereality which I crave to be surrounded by, and the draw of a certain elegance and richness of palette that is too supreme and commanding to ignore.

I have drawn and enjoyed the arts throughout my whole life, as well as my educated life taking an honours degree in Fine Art at The University of Lincoln. It was heavily installed in me throughout these years that a career as an artist would not be possible. After finding myself in a bleak position in 2012 I prepared to rebuild a foundation for myself and my "impossible to achieve" career as an artist. 2013 was my year. I threw all of my money, my whole life, everything I lived and breathed into creating art and marketing my products, whilst sharing with the world as far as I could reach what I could do.

I accumulated a great following through social media, was on the cover of The Journal Magazine Dec 13 and was featured in American Cliche' Oct/Nov 13, as well as earning a living from my work alone. All within the first year.

My message through my art isn not just aesthetic appreciation for wildlife around us and it's strength and beauty captured in the form of oil paintings. But that we, much like the nature and wildlife that my work represents, have auras, atmosphere and movement about us which aught to be followed.

GUILLERMO MUÑOZ VERA

GUILLERMO MUÑOZ VERA
The Light of the Alhambra

May 1 - June 27, 2014

Blue Pigments, 2012, oil on canvas mounted on panel, 24 x 31 1/2 inches

New York, NY  - Forum Gallery presents its third exhibition of paintings by Spanish artist Guillermo Muñoz Vera, opening May 1 through June 27, 2014.  In The Light of the Alhambra, Munoz Vera demonstrates the relationships between past and present, new world and old world and art and life that reveal the mystery and beauty of The Alhambra, which has survived conquests, diverse rulers and cycles of abandonment since the 9th century.

For Muñoz Vera, The Alhambra itself and the surrounding Andalusian region of southern Spain represent the inherent possibilities of multicultural progress, the harmony of commerce, science, technology and art long sought by enlightened Europe.

Through the views of temples, gardens, oceans and deserts in this exhibition, the Artist points us to the rich history each subject represents. Muñoz Vera believes that the Islamic architecture of the Alhambra, completed towards the end of Muslim rule in 14th-century Spain, and its preservation throughout centuries serves to inspire the creation of all forms of beauty in contemporary life.  His painterly observations unite the patina of age with the atmosphere of today, bringing a fresh perspective to every work.

The crystalline still lifes are rich and highly focused portrayals of tradition.  They show the materials and tools that have been used through centuries of Andalusian life to make the objects that denote Granada.

The contemporary life of Granada, part of Spain since Columbus’ time, is the subject of Muñoz Vera’s figurative works in this exhibition.  From the perspective of history, the Artist shows us the life of today as it goes on against the background of the cultural past.

The 15 paintings in The Light of the Alhambra will remain on view until June 27, 2014.

Please visit www.forumgallery.com/exhibitions/current-season to view the entire exhibition online. The exhibition begins on May 1, 2014 and will be on view through June 27, 2014. Forum Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5:30 pm. For further information, contact the gallery. A full-color catalogue is available from the gallery.

Reykjavík Arts Festival, May 22 - June 5

Nicht Fertig Not Finished

The focus of the 28th Reykjavík Arts Festival is on the artistic process in a wide context. Large-scale collaborations between artists from all fields are a distinguishing feature of the festival, but so are smaller events and exhibitions by individual artists. One of the roles of Reykjavík Arts Festival is to support artistic innovation and this year new commissions and premieres feature prominently in the festival programme.

Hanna Styrmisdóttir, Artistic Director of the Reykjavík Arts Festival introduced the program recently under the heading Nicht Fertig / Not Finished. The title this year comes from a crate containing the work of Dieter Roth, who was closely connected to the history of visual arts in Iceland. The title says what everyone engaged in a creative process of any kind knows full well; that it is never finished.

Nearly 500 artists will participate in or contribute to this extensive, diverse festival, featuring over sixty concerts, theatre productions, film screenings, performances and exhibitions.

Matthew Barney
RIVER OF FUNDAMENT

One of the highlights of this years Reykjavík Arts festival is RIVER OF FUNDAMENT, the latest work by American artist Matthew Barney, made in collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler. The film which is approximately six hours long, is a radical reinvention of Norman Mailer’s novel, Ancient Evening. In RIVER OF FUNDAMENT the artists fuse narrative cinema, live performance, sculpture and opera, reconstructing Mailer’s story of Egyptian gods and the seven stages of reincarnation, alongside the story of the rise and fall of the American car industry.
RIVER OF FUNDAMENT will be screened on May 27. Tickets are available here.

Rakel McMahon in Nau Gallery

Rakel McMahon opens her first solo show abroad in Nau Gallery in Stockholm. Football as a social activity and a platform for communication is the subject of Rakel McMahon´s latest series of paintings, View of Motivation. The game itself, the players and spectators become a metaphor for a much broader interpretation on such issues as gender identity, stereo-typing and sexuality.

The works of Hreinn Friðfinnsson in focus

Time and Time and Again

Recently two exhibitions opened in Reykjavík, where the works of Hreinn Friðfinnsson are in focus. The exhibitions support each other in a very natural way, each one a true delight and together providing a precious insight into the work of Friðfinnsson then and now, while simultaneously the work of younger artists beautifully weaves around and into it in a new film,Time and Time and Again.

In the Living Art Museum, an exhibition consists of older works by Hreinn and Time and Time and Again, a film of his life and art, directed by Ragnheiður Gestsdóttir and Markús Thor Andrésson. Significant works from the artist’s career and elements of his biography are used as the backbone for a thrilling narrative involving the struggle between science’s search for the truth and the creative longing of art.

Simultaneously i8 galleri opened A Portrait of a Sculptor as a Sculpture, with a Sculpture by the Sculptor, an exhibition featuring new video works by Friðfinnsson with his long time friend and sculptor Kristinn E. Hrafnsson.

Friðfinnsson (born 1943) lives and works in Amsterdam. He grew up in the scenery in rural Iceland, often visible in his works, which often are simple in composition and made from found objects, very poetic and explore everyday experiences.

Explore some of Friðfinnsson´s work here or read Hans Ulrich Obrist´s interview with him here.

If in Iceland, do not miss these exhibitions, if elsewhere, consider a visit!
