Eleanor Harwood Gallery presents:

New Work by Kirk Maxson

Foraging

Kirk Maxson, California Bay Laurel, 2014, brass and steel, 4 x 3 ft.

Alexis Anne Mackenzie

Synthesis

Exhibition Dates: April 5 - May 10, 2014
Opening Reception: April 5th, 2014 | 4-7 PM

March 22, 2014 (San Francisco, CA) - Eleanor Harwood Gallery is pleased to present Kirk Maxson in his first solo show with the gallery, Foraging. Presenting new work by the artist, Foraging will feature the hand cut paper and metal wall installations the artist is know for, as well as a new series of aluminum and brass sculptures. In the back room Project Space, Alexis Anne Mackenzie will show new collages in her show Synthesis. Two shows perfectly timed for spring, as cycles of renewal and rebirth transform the outdoor, as well as internal, landscapes. The gallery will host a reception on April 5, 2014 from 4 to 7 PM at 1295 Alabama St., San Francisco, CA 94110.

Kirk Maxson's work is, in a word, enchanting. He creates hundreds of small hand cut metal leaves arranged in clusters that form large-scale installations, as well as a series of butterflies made from pages of Natural History books, some dating back to the 19th century. The installations are made by individually inserting each petal, leaf or butterfly into the wall on thin wires. The result is an installation the feels as alive and organic as its subject matter, sometimes quivering in a breeze and casting delicate shadows against the structures supporting the work.

Maxson's large scale installations have been commissioned for several corporate collections and gallery spaces, including his installation of butterflies exhibited at Eli Ridgway Gallery in 2011. Cut out of images of war, the butterflies created a deeply sad and beautiful meditation on grief, loss and the transience of human life and suffering. Maxson also installed 1,000 butterflies at the Genentech headquarters, made of aluminum and painted from deep blues to vibrant reds. In contrast, this installation is joyous and optimistic, speaking to metamorphosis as Genetech researches and manufactures treatments for ill patients. In his first solo show at Eleanor Harwood Gallery, Kirk has continued this delicate and nuanced work, expanding it with a series of metal sculptural tree branches, based on species including Laurel, Olive and Rose.

A skilled forager, Kirk gathers his own plant specimens, creating an extensive herbarium from which he bases his paper and metal reproductions, a practice that gives his manmade flora and fauna its inherent lifelike quality. Trained by his mother, an expert mushroom gatherer, the quest and seeking-in the woods, under freeway over passes, on a neighborhood walk-imbues his work with the natural pleasure of perceiving and looking at nature, in all its variety and surprises. The chance observations that make up his plant gathering are translated to the artist's installation style, which may appear around a corner, or climbing a wall, discovered and not displayed.

The gallery's newly appointed back room Project Space will feature new work by Alexis Anne Mackenzie in Synthesis. Her collages, composed of multiple images sliced and spliced back together in an overlay that marries the outline of forms from both images, can be understood like a film editor's work, weaving disparate scenes into a story. The intricacy of the artist's technique is offset by the minimalist composition, achieving a beauty and fragility in the pairing. The show's title,Synthesis, references this merging of two things, as well as a plant's natural process of conversion, a theme of change and growth particularly relevant to the artist as she prepares for an overseas move.

KUMARE Filmmaker & Provocateur Vikram Gandhi Joins HBO’s VICE As Producer & Correspondent

KUMARE Filmmaker & Provocateur Vikram Gandhi Joins HBO’s VICE As Producer & Correspondent
VICE Episodes With Vikram Gandhi Starts April 4th, 2014 only on HBO
March 24th, 2014 (New York, NY) -- Provocateur, filmmaker and journalist Vikram Gandhi has joined HBO’s Emmy® nominated news magazine show, VICE.
Gandhi, who has previously appeared on The Colbert Report, Nightline, Al Jazeera’s The Stream, and numerous NPR programs, will produce segments for VICE and appear as an on-air correspondent.  Gandhi will explore a range of topics and stories from terrorism in India, to tribal uprising in Papua New Guinea, to government secrecy in Japan, and ultra-violence in Honduras.
"Vice makes the kind of documentaries that I'd been trying to make for years. There is a deeper truth that can be revealed from living in a story. And that is what we are trying to tap into. It was a perfect fit for me. It's been refreshing to be in an environment that is not afraid to take risks. This season has been challenging, seeing the world in way I've never seen before", said Vikram Gandhi.
Vikram Gandhi’s film Kumaré won the Audience Award for Feature Documentary at SXSW 2011.  In Kumaré, Vikram impersonates a religious leader and creates a following of real people.  While concealing his true identity from everyone he meets, Kumaré forges profound and spiritual connections with people from all walks of life.  By building a nest of followers, teaching them that religious leaders are not needed in finding spiritual enlightenment by subsequently outing himself, Vikram in the end, became a student to Kumaré’s teachings, helping himself while helping others.
Kino Lorber released Kumaré in the US to critical praise; the film was then released in over 20 other countries.  Stephen Holden gave the film a positive review in The New York Times, The Village Voice called the film “Incredibly moving”, The Washington Post gave it a “critic’s pick” and Salon gave it a “Pick of the Week”.
The innovative news magazine show VICE kicked off its 12-edition second season FRIDAY, MARCH 14th (11:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT), immediately following “Real Time with Bill Maher.”  Vikram Gandhi’s first of five episodes airs on FRIDAY, APRIL 4th.  Joining Vikram this season are additional new award-winning correspondents to the show’s roster. Along with Shane Smith, 2014 correspondents include VICE Media co-founder Suroosh Alvi; conflict-zone journalist, documentary filmmaker and author Ben Anderson; Academy Award®-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist Fazeelat Aslam (HBO’s “Saving Face”); VICE Media editor-in-chief Rocco Castoro; artist David Choe; Iranian photojournalist and filmmaker Gelareh Kiazand; and longtime VICE correspondent Thomas Morton.
HBO partners with VICE, the revolutionary new media company of the same name, on the Emmy®-nominated weekly series.
Always unorthodox and at times irreverent, VICE takes viewers around the globe as its correspondents cover stories often overlooked by traditional media outlets. When reporting on today’s most pressing issues, from anti-government rebellions to hotbeds of terrorist activity to conflict and corruption, VICE uses an immersive documentary style to bring a unique perspective to the events shaping the future.
Hosted by VICE Media founder Shane Smith, the series is executive produced by Bill Maher, Shane Smith, Eddy Moretti, VICE’s chief creative officer, and BJ Levin, with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria serving as consultant.
In the 2014 season, VICE investigates a broad range of topics, traveling to global locations to report on everything from rampant U.S. military waste and corruption in Afghanistan to extortion, torture and killing in Rio’s favelas, and terrorist training in Dagestan.

Trish and her daughter will be showing the profound influence each has on the other with a lifetime of memories and the art that has resulted from their relationship. A legacy lives on in our children and grandchildren and beyond.
Trish Weeks is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati,, Design, Art, Architecture and Planning with a BS in Design.  She built a successful career in corporate and residential interior design before her painting career began in 1994.  Trish has received awards in numerous juried shows on a local, regional and national level and has been represented by galleries in Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina, Michigan and New Mexico.  Her work is included in private and corporate collections throughout the world.  Trish has been invited to participate in June in two museum events in Cincinnati.
Trish draws inspiration from her experiences in the Midwest and the Carolinas where she spends much of her time.  She also brings a more global perspective by layering memories from travels to paint in France; as well as trips to other locations in Europe, India, China, Japan and Nepal.  Many of her trips include her portable equipment so she may paint out in the environments she is experiencing.

Trish Weeks states about her own work: “I am drawn to organic landscapes that seem to breathe and vibrate with amazing energy.  My signature work portrays expressionist views of nature; created by combining simple compositions and complex layers of color. This is achieved using a palette knife, which allows me to intensify the impact and clarity of the colors.”

“Those who have experienced my work routinely comment on how good it makes them feel.  My palette knife, color and liberal use of paint create a vibrant, tactile experience that has been described as ‘a dance with color’.”
