Blow Up
by Michelangelo Antonioni

1966, 111 minutes
 in English

This 1966 masterpiece by Michelangelo Antonioni is set in the heady atmosphere of Swinging London, and stars David Hemmings as an unsmiling fashion photographer hooked on ephemeral meaning attached to anything: art, sex, work, relationships, drugs, events. When a real mystery falls into his lap, he probes the evidence for some reliable truth, but finds it hard to reckon with. Vanessa Redgrave plays an enigmatic woman whose desperation to cover something up only seems like one more phenomenon in Hemmings's disinterested purview. This is one of the key films of the decade, and still an unsettling and lasting experience.
The immense success of this film, which contains scenes that were considered explicit at the time of its release in 1966, was the final catalyst that led to the creation of the Motion Picture Association of America film rating system still used today.

Mosaici:
Snapshots of Contemporary Italian Life

by Anna Clara Ionta and
Anna Taraboletti Segre

in the presence of the publisher, Jean Farinelli

Thursday, March 27th 2014, 6:00 pm
Italian Cultural Institute
The presentation will be in Italian

What would be the best way to teach -- and learn -- Italian in an increasingly connected society? What approaches can be used to reach students from fields outside languages and literature, who wish to study Italian as a way to complement their interests, be they economics, sociology, history of art, the travel sector and more?

Mosaici is a textbook with accompanying DVD designed for learners of Italian at the intermediate level. It is organized into six units on topics ranging from tradition and globalization, youth employment, urban graffiti, the elderly, the environment, and the changing patterns of family. Each unit is introduced by a short film clip from a recent Italian movie, followed by activities that stimulate observation, reflection, and comprehension. Movie clips include Focaccia Blues, an independent film about a small bakery in southern Italy, and La ragazza del lago, featuring award-winning actor Toni Servillo.

The authors will describe the motivations behind this innovative textbook, its main learning objectives, and the way vocabulary is presented in the context of contemporary issues in Italian life and society.

Anna Clara Ionta, a native of Italy, has been teaching Italian in the United States since 1987. She holds a Laurea in Classical Studies from University of Rome "La Sapienza" and the DITALS Certification (Certificato in Didattica dell' Italiano a Stranieri) from the Università per Stranieri di Siena, Italy. She is lecturer at Loyola University Chicago.

Anna Taraboletti Segre studied at Civica Scuola del Piccolo Teatro and Università degli Studi of Milan, Italy. She holds a Master's in English and American Literature from the University of California at San Diego. A translator of English and Italian, she teaches Italian at Loyola University Chicago
Mosaici will be available to attendees at a special price.
A conversation and a light reception will follow.

A teenaged Neapolitan granita seller is forced to babysit a big-mouthed female peer for a Camorra boss in The Interval, the impressively subdued first fiction feature of Leonardo Di Costanzo (At School). Shot on sleek 16mm in an abandoned mental institution by Luca Bigazzi (The Great BeautyThis Must Be the Place), this film chronicles the push-pull dynamics of the adolescent protagonists, who both try to act older than their age in order to survive in their potentially violent reality.

JoyCut, from Bologna, Italy, was formed in 2001 and named for the conceptual conjunction between the song 'Joey' from Nick Drake and Pink Floyd's album The Final Cut. This post-rock, dark-wave outfit weaves powerful sonic moments using electronic melodies and percussion with found objects from the urban landscape. Often experimental but always accessible, JoyCut has found a loyal fanbase in Italy and the UK as well as most of Europe. Having opened and toured with such bands as The Editors, Art Brut, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire and Sebadoh, the trio is poised to win over American fans on their first proper US Tour in February and March of 2014 (a mini tour happened in October 2013). The tour will be in support of their third album, PiecesOfUsWereLeftOnTheGround (released in 2013 by Italy's largest record label, IRMA) and centered on their selection for the South By Southwest festival, for which they were one of just two Italian bands to be selected thus far!

Plus Fox

Please join us this Sunday for the opening reception of Pius Fox's - We Expected Something Better Than Before6-9pm. 57 Orchard Street.

In a March 2014 article called “The other fairs”, in The New Centurion, Writer Brian P. Kelly had this to say about Fox’s art at Volta NY:
The abstractions of Pius Fox are, in a word, sublime. Worked quickly and with very little pre-planning, these paintings are incredibly energetic. Their surfaces are rich in detail, the speed of Fox’s work leaving a readable puzzle that tells the story of each piece’s creation. A young artist (born in 1983, he graduated from the University of the Arts in Berlin in 2010), he is brimming with talent and holds great promise for the future.”

Porter Contemporary presents Letters From Home

New York, NYPorter Contemporary presents Letters From Home, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Jason Bryant opening with an artist reception on Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
Letters from Home (2013), oil on canvas, 60" x 50"

With the gallery walls pitch black, Letters from Home reflects Jason Bryant's vision of war through beautiful hyper-realistic black and white oil paintings of classic film imagery merged with iconic visceral skateboard graphics. These paintings capture a range of emotions by literally having the bold colorful painted graphics battle with the lavish classic film imagery on the canvas. The bright, explosive graphics wage war on the canvas with paintings of iconic images from such well-known films as "Suzy", "The Young Ones", and "Flesh and the Devil". Each painting becomes a metaphor for how vastly different pop cultures--film and skateboarding--work together creating these harmonious images that simultaneously show beauty, hope, loss, love, survival and hate ultimately creating a magnification of these emotions. The paintings in this exhibition use the lens of Hollywood and skateboarding culture as a foundation to explore our ideas of hope, longing, loss and how war magnifies these emotions and
Real Love is Never Ambivalent (2013), oil on canvas, 36" x 30"
affects us for generations to come.

Letters From Home is Jason Bryant's fifth solo exhibition created for Porter Contemporary. Later in 2014, Rocky Mount Arts Center near where Bryant grew up in North Carolina will host his first museum retrospective.

Letters From Home will be on view at Porter Contemporary April 10 through Saturday, May 24, 2014. An evening with Jason Bryant for an artist talk will be announced soon.

About Jason Bryant:

Jason Bryant, originally from Wilson, NC, currently lives and works in New York City. Bryant graduated from East Carolina University with a BFA and went on to the Maryland Institute College of Art for his MFA in painting. Bryant moved to New York City soon after and began work with such notable artists as Kehinde Wiley and Bjarne Melgaard.
Heavily influenced by classic film, Bryant begins each painting by researching images from cinematic moments or magazine images of interest to fit various themes exploring loneliness, vulnerability and frailty. Bryant renders each image, at first as a pencil sketch on canvas without the use of projection and then by transforming the image through oil paint into a photorealistically and beautifully rendered film still. Bryant, a skateboarder himself,
then incorporates signature skateboard graphics or paints in pixilated areas often cropping the eyes or framing the characters.

Bryant's paintings have been exhibited across the United States, Europe, and Australia, are represented by galleries in New York, London, and the Gold Coast, and are collected worldwide. His work has been featured and covered in Juxtapoz Magazine, Thrasher (U.S. and France), NY Arts Magazine, American Artist, Ocean Home Magazine, and Time Out New York.
