Hands-On Workshop with Protégé Art Studio Friday, January 19, 10 am - 12 pm Enjoy a morning of exploring and drawing in the galleries with Protégé Art Studio! Begin with a guided tour of the exhibition Salt Life: Arthur Dove & Helen Torr. Then, join artist and owner of Protégé Art Studio, Robyn Cooper, for an introduction to sketching and watercolor, inspired by the intimate modernist artworks of Dove and Torr.   Ages 18+. Contact Caitlynn Schare at Schare@Heckscher.org for information and to claim your complimentary tickets.  In Memory of Thomas Campbell, 1927-2023 The Museum honors and remembers Museum Docent Tom Campbell, who was an exceptional champion for the Museum for more than 13 years. He educated and delighted visitors with his vast knowledge and enthusiasm.  Among his notable honors: Tom was the inspiration for a student artist in Long Island's Best. In 2015, Grant Fryc, then an 11th grader at Northport High School, used a photograph of Tom as the basis for a mixed-media portrait. This portrait would go on to win the U.S. Congressional Art Competition and hang in the U.S. Capital for a year.  True to his love and support of the Museum, Tom's family requested that memorial donations be made to The Heckscher Museum of Art. Tom Campbell, with LI Best artist Grant Fryc, and his work, Erudite, 2015. Long Island Joins The Space Race at Cinema Arts Centre The Lunar Module that transported two astronauts to the moon in July 1969 was built right here on Long Island. Long Island Joins The Space Race is an independent feature length documentary that tells of the Grumman Aircraft Corporation engineers and the now primitive technology they used to achieve this most fantastic voyage. Filmmaker Glenn Andreiev, whose father was part of the Lunar Module team, uses rare archival footage as well as interviews with the engineers, Museum Executive Director & CEO Heather Arnet and former Curatorial Assistant Justyce Bennett, to bring us to the moon.  Premiering on January 22, 7:30 pm, at Cinema Arts Centre. Marking Time Chris McCaw in conversation with Maggie Dethloff Saturday, January 20, 2:00 PM Bayfront Theater (BATS Improv) at Fort Mason 2 Marina Boulevard, Building B, 3rd Floor, San Francisco, 94123 Join San Francisco photographer Chris McCaw and Maggie Dethloff (Assistant Curator of Photography and New Media, Cantor Arts Center) for an insightful conversation about his innovative practice at Fort Mason's Bayfront Theater, and the launch of McCaw's new monograph, Marking Time. This event is co-hosted by Haines and PhotoAlliance, coinciding with SF Art Week and FOG Design+Art 2024. McCaw's work will be on view at Haines' presentation in booth 306 at the fair. Free with RSVP Reserve your spot Published by Datz Press, Chris McCaw: Marking Time reflects work the artist has made with solarized paper negatives in the last ten years, with beautifully reproduced images from his Sunburn, Heliograph, Poly-optics, and Tidal series. Chris McCaw's artistic practice is firmly rooted in the history of photography while pushing the medium in new directions. The lenses in his handmade cameras function as magnifying glasses, allowing the sun to literally burn its path across the light-sensitive negatives that are often solarized in the process. His work is held in the collections of the Berkeley Art Museum, CA; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY; Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, among many others. Maggie Dethloff serves as Assistant Curator of Photography and New Media at the Cantor Arts Center. With a focus on 20th and 21st century American photography, her research is concerned with ways photography and digital media reflect and shape contemporary life. Maggie is deeply invested in exploring questions about photographic materials and techniques, approaching them from historical, theoretical, and practical perspectives. Most recently, Maggie curated the exhibitions Más Allá | Beyond Here: The Judy and Sidney Zuber Collection of Latin American Photography; A Change of Scenery: Photographs of Leisure in the Landscape; and At Home/On Stage: Asian American Representation in Photography and Film at the Cantor.
