The fourteen works on view will reflect art’s longstanding relationship with the car as a cultural icon and fetish object replete with physical and symbolic possibilities. Opening December 4th in Miami Beach, Florida, the exhibition will be presented on the top level of 1111 Lincoln Road, the dramatic open-air parking structure designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. PISTON HEAD will run through December 8,th in conjunction with Art Basel MiamiBeach, the annual art fair considered one of the most magnetic events of the international cultural calendar. PISTON HEAD is powered by Ferrari. The exhibition includes works by Ron Arad, Bruce High Quality Foundation, César, Dan Colen and Nate Lowman, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Virginia Overton, Olivier Mosset/ Jacob Kassay/Servane Mary, Richard Phillips, Richard Prince, Tom Sachs, Salvatore Scarpitta, Kenny Scharf, and Franz West. Additionally, Los Angeles-based artist Joshua Callaghan will create a new work – a signature ‘rubbing’ of Ferrari’s LaFerrari state-of-the-art hybrid supercar, which was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show and will be on view with PISTON HEAD inMiami. Callaghan’s performative process, engaging the precious surfaces and sculpted form of the limited-edition vehicle, will be part of the exhibition. Since 1886, when the Benz-Patent Motorwagen became the first modern motorcar, automobiles have shaped human experience. The quintessential machine of modern life, the car has defined cities, redefined our relationships to the natural world and one another, challenged technology, and fired the imaginations of countless artists in every discipline. Whether via the appeal of its speed to the Italian Futurists, or its mass-produced utility for Pop artists, the automobile has preoccupied artists consistently. Objects on view in PISTON HEAD are not only about the car in contemporary culture, but are actual cars -- fully realized sculptures comprised of vehicles that can roll on four wheels or once did. By removing these works from the white-walled conventions of contemporary galleries and museums, and placing them in the context of a working parking garage, Venus Over Manhattan highlights the way the participating artists have exploited tensions between refinement and brute power, aesthetics and utility. The artists represented in PISTON HEAD have approached the car as both object and subject in numerous ways. Layered in Bondo, Richard Prince’s American muscle cars are monochromatic, neutral compositions reminiscent of Minimalist painting and sculpture (another brand of American muscle). Conceptual Art and Process Art come to mind when viewing Virginia Overton’s ruggedly elegant Dodge Ram, transformed by a mountain of sand to obscure most of the vehicle’s defining details. In the painterly vein, Britain’s Damien Hirst offers Spot Mini, a classic, diminutive British automobile covered in the artist’s trademark colorful spots. Similarly, Keith Haring applied his own recognizable imagery to a well-worn Buick, employing his signature calligraphic style to transform the car into a rolling painting. In contrast to these more painterly works, the car of the late Viennese artist Franz West suggests a sculptural approach tinged with wit. West replaced the existing “Spirit of Ecstasy” hood ornament on his 1970 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow with one of his signature Passstuck sculptures. This small gesture transforms West’s personal ride into a commentary on the car as a conveyance of status, identity, and wish fulfillment. Bruce High Quality Foundation’s recently completed work – a pair of entangled Volkswagen Beetles – is a more suggestive take on cars as symbols of what the artists describe as “passion and suffering.” Brute power has always been the companion of elegance in the world of automobiles and has been frequently addressed in 20th century art history. In a series of works called Compresions des Voitures and created from the 1960s until the artist’s death in 1998, renowned French sculptor César crushed automobiles in order to suggest the collision of classicism and contemporary art. PISTON HEAD will present one of these celebrated works, a “car brick” from among the group César exhibited in the Pavilion of the French Republic at the Venice Biennale of 1995.  César’s work will echo in the contribution of Israeli-born artist and industrial designer Ron Arad, whose own car compression has rendered a six-inch thick ‘canvas.’ Power of another sort – the destructive power of entropy and chaos that result from neglect and mistreatment – will be on view in a contribution from Dan Colen and Nate Lowman. Their collaborative work, created in 2008, is a dilapidated four-door sedan, stuffed with TV sets.  Lucien Smith’s sorrowfully pockmarked and crumbling vehicle once served as the target at a shooting range. With it’s lyric-like title of “The sound of the engine still running and for the last time they locked eyes, together again in the end,” Smith’s work draws chaos away from the merely sad, toward the Romantic. From such glamorous nihilism, PISTON HEAD comes full circle to the joyful, unbridled magic of Kenny Scharf’s painted dinosaur of a family vehicle. #fineartmagazine

Brazil ArtFair Comes to Miami   First Fair Dedicated to Brazilian Contemporary Art and Design Debuts During Art Week December 4-8, 2013   Claudia Jaguaribe, Quando Eu Vi Bibliotecas, 2009   São Paulo, Brazil – Brazil ArtFair, the first fair dedicated to Brazilian contemporaryart and design will debut in Miami this December 4-8, with VIP and press previews on Tuesday, December 3rd.  Press can register via the Brazil ArtFair website, www.brazilartfair.com.   Housed in a 25,000 square foot exposition center, on Midtown Boulevard, near the Wynwood Art District, Brazil ArtFair will present work from 15 Brazilian art galleries, over 100 artists, an exhibition of work by Brazilian artists curated by Luisa Duarte, andOrchestra Brasil, a selection of innovative contemporary furniture by 18 of Brazil’s leading design studios.   “Our mission for the first edition is to present art and design that reflects contemporary Brazil,” said Brazil ArtFair director, Michel Serebrinsky. “From the selection of galleries and the art that they will exhibit, to Luisa Duarte’s curated exhibition, to the design of our space, we created Brazil ArtFair with the purpose of bringing to Miami not just a new art fair experience but also a new experience of Brazil.”   Brazil ArtFair has gathered a strong group of carefully selected Brazilian galleries,artists, and designers – both established and emerging – and has approached the fair with a strong curatorial point of view. The show aspires to not only inform the world market about the dynamic new work that is being produced in Brazil, but also to educate the attendees about the country’s complex political, social, and cultural realities. Brazil ArtFair’s directors and curators see Brazil’s contemporary art and design as catalysts for change and movement helping to create worldwide awareness for the country. An important part of this mission, the curated exhibition, Tempo Suspenso (Suspended Time) addresses the political concerns that have galvanized contemporary Brazilian artistic practice and examines relationships between art, politics, and civic engagement. The exhibition will feature works, not for sale, by 15 renowned Brazilian artists including Mauro Restiffe, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Pedro Motta.   The design of the pavilion features an inflatable entrance created by Marton Estúdio.Designed to resemble the concrete architecture of Brasilia, the country’s capital, it will rhythmically inflate and deflate as a metaphor for the dynamic new life of the contemporary Brazilian art scene.   The exhibiting galleries will present a wide range of artistic voices including: the sophisticated popular art works from Galeria Estação, street art from Galeria Movimento and Galeria Logo and conceptual contemporary art from Central Galeria de Arte and Emma Thomas. In addition to the work of young Brazilian artists – such as Ícaro Lira, Frederico Filippi and Mayana Redin, from Galeria Um Zero Três (103) – visitors will have the opportunity to acquire work by prestigious established Brazilianartists, such as Claudia Jaguaribe and Vania Mignone. Holmes Founder of The Brickellian, a company that develops art marketing programs for cultural institutions, foundations and non-profit organizations, Holmes is also the founder of West Encounters East, a company that makes documentary films about multicultural artists to increase awareness of and respect for cultural differences. For this exhibition I wanted to further explore that concept and actualize it's potential to be something really fun and amazing. Fast-forward almost one year and well I think I captured what I wanted to...the nostalgia of our youth. I've spent time learning how to manipulate neon lighting with the help of master neon bender, Dave Ablon  (Brooklyn Glass) in an effort to transport the viewer into a real life arcade game.  To capture the piece in action, I created a stop motion short with a great photographer and friend Joel Sheakowsky. Finally to bring it all together I worked with my good friend and producer Chi-Bheats of Bklyn Stickup to create a heartbeat for this piece, an original music composition. This collection is meant to transport you back to a time when having fun were our biggest priority. I hope you enjoy. C. Gregory Gummersall began his professional art more than thirty years ago primarily as a West Coast artist. In the late 90s Gummersall returned to an 80-acre ranch near Durango, Colorado, which suits his needs for lots of space in which to create art. Influenced by artists such as John Corbett, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and CyTwombly, and Richard Diebenkorn, Gummersall's paintings have an energetically gestural, spontaneous quality. His brushstrokes suggest symbols or signs whose meanings can be sensed but never fully grasped. They are reminiscent of adrenaline-filled quickly drawn graffiti. But unlike the temporary existence of most graffiti, Greg's brushstrokes and use of collage build upon each other to create a sense of memory in the canvases; nothing is erased, and through the layers of paint, the history of his marks remain visible. "The advance mystery of making aesthetic sense by working with the puzzled balancing's, coherent compositions, complimentary colors, and surfaced layers into rhythmic shared things of beauty is the reward. My secondary application of 'ground' over 'figure' illustrates my unusual interest in balancing the spontaneity of 'chaos' with the need for 'order'. It also utilizes the free form of expressionist seemingly random marks with the more minimal ordering via painting out the excess chaos that then forms a new ground. Rhythmic lines, as architectural elements, add to the gestalt."  As an artist, with never ending creative challenges, Gummersall gets easily bored with repetition. In the art business, where repetition sells, Greg had concerns that the range of his different series styles might be viewed as "immature" or unfocused. His friend (and former museums director), Mr.Gerald Nordland, informed him of how greats like Picasso and Matisse also worked in many different style series changes. Coming from such a respected Arts Scholar, the advice was reassuring. His cycling back through the various series over the past 35+ years results in change, interest, and the needed growth of added variety. "My primary objective is to add beauty and expanded awareness to the viewers of my art. Contrary to much of the Art World's "Shock Art", I hope that my art communicates on a higher plane and provides a sort of refuge in a troubled world." Gummersall's art is in numerous private, corporate and public collections including the Fordham University Museum at Lincoln Center, Federal Reserve Bank Chicago, Palm Springs Art Museum, Toyota, Tucson Museum of Art, ANA Sheraton Hotel/ Osaka, Pacific Bank and many others. Greg was honored to be included in the 183rd National Academy Invitational Exhibition Of Contemporary American Art in New York.   #fineartmagazine
