"I have always been a daydreamer and get many of my ideas during that state of semi-consciousness. My inspiration comes from a wide variety of sources including fthe natural world and freaks of nature, melancholy trips down memory lane and discoveries made there, classical music, oddities, Victorian fashion, old medical book illustrations, costuming, creepy religious statues, carnivals, broken dolls and objects out of place." Jennybird Alcantara

Please join us, and our special guest Jennybird Alcantara for an opening reception to be held at AFA in SoHo on October 19th, from 6-8PM. The exhibition includes a collection of nearly 50 original works: oil paintings, works on paper and mixed-media dolls.  The exhibition runs from October 16th through November 15th.

The gallery is located at 54 Greene Street in SoHo
Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10am-7pm / Sundays, 11am-6pm
More information: 212.226.7374 | info@afanyc.com

In "Curious Nature", Alcantara uses the symbolism of duality to explore the connection between life and death, as well as the beauty and cruelness of natural things, including landscape, animals and humans. The exhibition coincides with a feature story on the Artist in Hi-Fructose Magazine's October 2013 issue.

While the majority of this exhibition consists of oil paintings on wood, it also includes sculptures of unique dolls inspired by Alcantara's works on paper. Her creations have been described as morbidly romantic, and connected via a dreamlike narrative. Through her paintings, she contemplates the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. The anthropomorphic qualities in her characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits. The show's featured piece, 'The Curious Nature of Extraordinary Beings', is the largest in the collection, measuring 56 x 72 unframed.

Alcantara lives in San Francisco, and received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited broadly in the US and Europe and published in many publications including: Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz, Raw Vision, and Art Doll Quarterly. A collection of her work is compiled in a book entitled "Creatures of Saintly Disguise".

   Paul Flinders
October 4th - November 2nd 2013
Opening Reception, Friday October 4th, 7-10pm
Yes Gallery is proud to present "Overneath,"  an exhibition featuring works by Paul Flinders, curated by Lesley Doukhowetzky.

Paul approaches experience with optimistic curiosity and a particular attraction to the creepy and absurd.  When strange recollections allow the imagination to run riot, waking experience feels like a dream and it causes us to question the reality of the moment with a sense of awe.
Flinders work intuitively allows the freedom to explore form.  Without expectation or concern, non-idiomatic improvisation takes over and the subject emerges both personal and archetypal, abstract and representational. Paul’s work invites the viewer into private and transcendent moments where they may either exist as intruders or guests.
Please join us for the opening reception.

Emanuela Bergonzoni | Present-day ecological Jewels

It's LIQUID News

Emanuela Bergonzoni | Present-day ecological Jewels

"Metal has always captured my imagination: I am thrilled by the
infinite possibilities of expression that it offers. Polished,
pressed, laminated, soldered, cut, cast, bent, burnished, rusted,
etched... metal has always been worked by the hand of man
serving as landmarks along his evolutionary path.

[...] I am amazed and astonished at how, at my will, my own
hands can forge and transform an amorphous mass of metal
into a beautiful ornament, harmonious and useful. [...] Working
the metal with my hands, without relying on industrial techniques:
this is what gives me the feeling, the knowledge, that I am
part of this history, part of the wave of
transformation". With these words Italian sculptress and
designer Emanuela Bergonzoni, describes her ecological metal jewels.

The Day After Collection is dedicated to those who appreciate
the beauty of simple yet strong shapes. A collection of
entirely handmade jewellery, each piece rigorously unique and
originally designed, bursting with vitality and harmony thanks to the
care with which they are conceived and crafted: the result of years
ofaesthetic and creative research, the fruit of a technique for creating
contemporary jewellery in tune with respect for the environment.

"The basic idea running through my work is to treat the metal as
if it were cloth: I translate this idea into crafting techniques that
express this intention. Over the last few years, I have concentrated
my research onenvironmentally sound techniques. For the Day
After Collection, I have made use of a complex hand-pressing
technique which renders the sheet of silver amazingly soft and supple".

International Art Expo

International ArtExpo

BorderBody

Call for Artists: BorderBody - Poland, October 2013Photography / Video Art / Computer Graphics / Architecture / Installation / Performing ArtEXTENDED DEADLINE: September 18, 2013

International ArtExpo is selecting all interesting photo works, video/short films, computer graphics works, architecture projects, installations and performances to include in the next 2013 Exhibition:

BorderBody | Mixing Cities and Identities - photography, video-art, computer graphics, architecture, installation and performing-art held in Gdynia (Poland) at Gdynia InfoBox -  Observatory of Changes, from the 4th to the 18th October 2013.

Opening: October 4th, 2013 at Gdynia InfoBox - Observatory of Changes, in Gdynia (Poland)

Extended deadline for applications is September 18th, 2013.

BorderBody” festival is composed by two sections: “Mixing Cities”, which deals with modern urban changes and their influence on citizens, and “Mixing Identities” focused on the hybridization of social identities in contemporary time. The selection will be based on the main concept of fluidity, motion, changing networks and cities transformations. In contemporary society boundaries are getting more and more fleeting, and also the identity; what makes every person or place a recognizable entity, turns out fluid, multiple, making the cultural, religious, ethnic borders changeable too. This change, this mutation has allowed to cross the inside of the identities creating new possible crossings, new blends. And it’s just this “contemporaneity” that makes our civilization conceived as subjected to a process of continuous evolution and cultural hybridization. There is no more limit between an identity and the other one but it is possible to walk, to cross a passage and to find oneself halfway through it, in a non-place, in a non-identity. People, backgrounds, societies, progress and all their inputs creates hybrid identities, modifying each other and being mixed in prospect to shape a better world. Mixing sustainable transport; modern (ICT) communication infrastructure; sustainable economic development; and wise management of natural resources, human, intellectual and social capital, is the key to reach a future better life quality. Changes are always positive and represent our future.

Gdynia InfoBox is a place of interest due to its remarkable architecture and also as a source of information on new projects in town provided in an interesting multi-medial and fascinating form. Gdynia InfoBox is a place where both the local community and tourists can have a good time in a coffee place with a terrace, or resting on a bench in the shade of the trees.

The event is open to photography, video art, computer graphics, architecture, installation and performing art.
