This is fun!! THe StonyBrook Staller's staff pic of films from the StonyBrook Film Festival running through July 21. See below dates!

We know 36 films are a lot to choose from, so if you’re unsure about where to start, we’ve got you covered. Here are the Staller staff’s picks for the films we’re loving at this year’s festival!

Kent Marks (Film Festival Coordinator, Contracts Administrator) reccomends...

DOWNBEAT

July 17 @ 9:30 PM

"Downbeat was made with almost no budget, plenty of actor investment, a talented crew, and what must have been hours in the editing room. This film is a gritty, unsentimental look at the life of a man who falls into street performing to make ends meet, and whose choices keep you guessing until the end...." Read more

Daria Carioscia (Development Director) reccomends...

"I just loved Hungarian Wedding because not only was it entertainingly funny, it took me on an adventure, all while letting me enjoy the beautiful dresses, colors, and rich traditions of celebrations in Hungary. Also featured is a standout performance by Franciska Törőcsik, an SBFF alumna and..." Read more

HUNGARIAN WEDDING

July 24 @ 7 PM

Alan Inkles (Director) reccomends...

THE SOUNDMAN

July 21 @ 9:30 PM

"The Soundman is such a layered film that, at its heart, it is a love story set against the backdrop of a radio station in Brussels, with the Nazi invasion moments away. It’s a beautiful roller coaster ride that takes you into the world of a 1930s radio sound studio, but never loses sight of..." Read more

Samantha Clink (Marketing Director) reccomends...

"Crystal Cross is that perfect mix of dark humor and the reality-driven, indie feel that a lot of us look for in our films. I was instantly hooked when I first watched the trailer thanks to Rubyrose Hill’s energy and effervescence in her portrayal of Dottie, and I’m excited for..."

The African Film Festival NY, SoundTrack to a ~Coup d" Etat~. screen at Snug Harbor, Staten Island NY, Thursday July 16, 7:30

Kick off the summer with AFF at our first outdoor screening of the season! Join us this Thursday at Snug Harbor for a special screening of the award-winning Soundtrack to a Coup d'État at 7:30 PM, preceded by a live jazz performance by Craig Harris.

THU, JULY 16 AT 7:30PM
'Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat' by Johan Grimonprez
Snug Harbor - South Meadow
1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10301

United Nations, 1960: The Global South ignites a political earthquake, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach storm the Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe, and the U.S. State Department sends jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. In this gripping essay film, director Johan Grimonprez traces the collision of African politics and American jazz, revealing the forces behind the 1961 assassination of Congo's leader Patrice Lumumba. Through eyewitness accounts, government memos, speeches, and a rich soundtrack of jazz icons, ‘Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat’ examines colonial history in a story whose political resonance remains strikingly relevant today.

SUN, JULY 19 2026 AT 2PM
'Rediscovering Fanon' by Rico Speight
The Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space
2537 Broadway at 95th Street
New York, NY 10025

Rediscovering Fanon is an independent feature documentary that explores the life, work, and enduring legacy of Frantz Fanon, the Martinican psychiatrist, philosopher, and revolutionary whose writings transformed global conversations about racism, colonialism, decolonization, and human liberation. Combining interviews, archival materials, music, and contemporary political reflection, the film demonstrates the continuing relevance of Fanon's ideas in the twenty-first century.
