Lin Esser's
new exhibition, "Unconventional Tableaux," began, in part, as an effort
to replace a Dia de los Muertos box lost during childhood. Further
inspired by the eccentric subjects of English symbolism, sinister
figures of the renaissance and the anthropomorphic tableaux of Victorian
naturalism, Esser soon found himself caught up in the creation of an
entire body of three-dimensional works that he later began calling
"tableaux." His dark introspective vision and extensive experience with
film and theater lend a sense of the dramatic to these macabre yet
playful narratives about the joys and sorrow of everyday life and
beyond.
The
son of a mechanical engineer, Esser spent his early childhood watching
and emulating his father draft the intricate exploded drawings and cross
sections of elaborate multi-cogged machinery. As a teenager, he
declined a formal art education to follow work as a skilled double bass
player and multi-instrumentalist. In the mid-eighties Esser continued
his pursuit of dual careers by relocating to New York City. He worked
with several prestigious theaters, publications and venues including the
Actors Studio, Plymouth Theater and Local Project Arts Collective.
Esser has scored and directed short films, exhibited his artwork and
authored workshops for regional artists and musicians. He can be heard
and seen as one third of the composition team currently re-scoring Hans
Richter's 1921 film Rhythmus 21. And, most recently, Esser's artwork and
music are the focus of Director/Cinematographer Dave Davidson's short
film, "Contacting the Living," in which eight tableaux are featured.
The opening reception for
"Unconventional Tableaux" is Saturday, March 3rd from 5 to 8pm. While
free and open to the public, RSVP is requested to rsvp@afanyc.com.
AFA is located at 54 Greene
Street (corner of Broome Street), in the SoHo neighborhood of New York
City. Hours are Monday - Saturday, 10am - 7pm and Sundays 11am - 6pm. To request more information or images contact Heidi Leigh at heidi@afanyc.com or 212.226.7374.

The
Uptown Art Fair, now celebrating its 49th year, takes over the
commercial district in Uptown Minneapolis. What began as a
neighborhood art sale developed into an internationally recognized,
three-day fine art festival attracting more than 350,000 people in one
weekend. Hosting approximately 350 artists, the Uptown Art Fair caters
to tourists, art enthusiasts, artists, and festival-goers from around
the country.
Uptown
Minneapolis is an eclectic mix of commercial, retail, and residential
properties in South Minneapolis. The intersection of Lake Street and
Hennepin Avenue is the center of a lively, upbeat business district and
is one of the busiest intersections in the state of Minnesota, creating
the perfect location for a fine art festival. Lake Harriet, Lake of
the Isles, and Cedar Lake are only a few blocks away, making Uptown's
tree-lined streets both welcoming and walkable.
The
primary focus of the Uptown Art Fair is the juried exhibition of
gallery quality fine art. Additionally, the event offers family
activities including a youth art fair, day and evening performances, a
wine garden, and high quality outdoor food vending.
The
Uptown Art Fair brings art to the people, draws visitors to Uptown,
and provides a showcase and sales outlet for both professional and
amateur artists from around the country. As the Uptown Association's
primary fundraising event, the Uptown Art Fair is an economic engine
for the community, generating revenue that pays for Uptown projects
including community clean ups, marketing and education seminars, extra
security officers, donations to local causes and neighborhood
organizations, and other community building activities.

The
Evergreen Fine Arts Festival is held in a tree-covered, historic park
in the foothills west of Denver. For almost fifty years, it has been a
festival run by artists for artists. The sponsoring, non-profit Evergreen
Artists Association provides the mountain communities with cultural
events, a cooperative up-scale gallery, classes for artists and youth
scholarships. The history of high quality that has been exhibited at
this festival continues to draw buyers from both the immediate
communities and the metro-Denver area. Most spaces are shaded at least
part of the day although there are some in the sun. The layout of the
park has been altered to eliminate difficult spaces to access via
dolly and to improve the flow of traffic. Space requests are honored
as much as possible.
