HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

Reception for Featured Artist: Kristyn Buffa

May 23, 12-2pm

Kristyn Buffa (Langstrand) is a proud South Shore, Long Island girl. A Lindenhurst resident for over 30 years, Kristyn’s first experience with photography came in the form of her grandfather’s OneStep Polaroid at four years old, used on fishing adventures and day trips to the Long Island Game Farm.

In high school, Kristyn took photography at St. John the Baptist. One of only two high schools at the time that still had a functioning darkroom, Kristyn’s love of analog film was nurtured by her father (who gifted her his 1978 Minolta) and her teacher, Kathleen Burns.

After starting her own portrait photography business she went on to become a published photographer, most notably for her Halloween themed “BOO-doir” sessions which had clients in attendance from four different states.

Her series of photographs, affectionately referred to as “The Five-Second Rule” is something Kristyn has been working on for nearly half a decade. “The five-second rule is a food hygiene urban legend that states a defined time window after which it is not safe to eat food (or sometimes to use cutlery) after it has been dropped on the floor or on the ground and thus exposed to contamination.”  Read her full bio HERE

On view May 12 - June 20

Reception: May 23, 12pm

Labouring Bodies
(10 June – 8 November 2026)

Labouring Bodies explores the complex relationship between body and technology from a feminist perspective. The group exhibition shows how the human body – especially the female body – has been shaped and controlled by machines since the dawn of the modern age. With a focus on working, caring, and birthing bodies, which have often remained invisible and been systematically overlooked, the exhibition examines the intertwining of industrial production and biological reproduction – a link reflected in the double meaning of the word 'labour' in the title.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to rediscover artworks from a period stretching back more than a century and to consider key social issues around the body, labour and care: What influence does mechanisation have on our lives and our workplaces? Which forms of labour are rewarded and which remain invisible? And how fairly distributed is the work that keeps society functioning?

Artists: Berenice Abbott, Monira Al Qadiri, Rosa Barba, Alexandra Bircken, Daniela Brugger, Ursula Burghardt, Feliza Bursztyn, Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise, Helen Chadwick, Sella Hasse, John Heartfield, Pati Hill, Rebecca Horn, Juliana Huxtable, Doruntina Kastrati, Mary Kelly, Aurora Király, Kiki Kogelnik, Azade Köker, Suzanne Lacy, Magda Langenstraß-Uhlig, Alice Lex-Nerlinger, Ani Liu, Lee Lozano, Alexandra Navratil, Katja Novitskova, Ernestyna Orlowska, Frida Orupabo, Margaret Raspé, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, Tabita Rezaire, Evelyn Richter, Niki de Saint Phalle, Marilou Schultz, Jean Tinguely, Doris Ziegler, et al.
