They didn’t ask to be heroes... just to be happy.

HBO Documentary Films and Augusta Films presents THE LOVING STORY, the inspiring documentary debut of Nancy Buirski, producer of Timepiece and Sweet Dreams.

This evocative documentary recounts the little-known story of the Lovings. The marriage of Mildred (who is part black and part Native American) and Richard (who is white) was declared illegal in 1958 by their home state of Virginia.

They refused to leave one another and, with the help of the ACLU, relentlessly pursued their right to happiness. Their case made it all the way to the US Supreme Court where, in 1967, laws against interracial marriage in this country were struck down once and for all.

With luminous, newly discovered 16mm footage of the Lovings and their lawyers, first-person testimony and rare documentary photographs, this film takes us behind the scenes of the legal challenges and the emotional turmoil of the case.

The Loving Story recreates a seminal moment in history and reflects a timely message of marriage equality in a personal, human love story.

Pedro Pacoinho

PEDRO PASCOINHO: NO FUTURE ! ? UTOPIA AS CONSTRUCTION...
AT ROOSTER GALLERY, 190 ORCHARD STREET, LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC

OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 6-8PM
EXHIBITION RUNS FROM OCTOBER 13 – NOVEMBER 23

Rooster Gallery Contemporary Art presents “Pedro Pascoinho: No Future !? Utopia as Construction...” opening on Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 6pm to 8pm.

For his first exhibition in New York City, Pedro Pascoinho (born 1972, Portugal) has decided to include only works on paper. Some will be disappointed that he is excluding installation art, another area in which he is active. Happily, despite the artist’s classical approach, both genres are served in the show. The non-conventional way the works are displayed, as well as their different sizes, provides the exhibition an installation-like quality, challenging the boundaries of both installation and painting.

The 14 works exhibited deal mainly with the issue of memory and our fragmented vision of memory. As with Pascoinho’s previous works, image occupies a central position in his thought process. Appropriation, fragmentation, decontextualization —these three steps, despite the kafkaesque result, lead the viewer to search for an ultimate truth through his own familiarity with the image.

These intimately dark works are closely connected to “film noir.” Through a careful mise-en-scène, Pascoinho creates silent environments, apparently devoid of any narrative logic insofar as the actions taking place are meaningless, approaching existential nihilism. The sense of fallibility and anguish derived from the works never ceases to rivet the viewer.

“No Future !? Utopia as Construction...” is a pictorial exercise in the triviality of meaning, the crisis associated with the selected images and, ultimately, our own perception of these ambiguities, which are closely related to the present. The ultimate truth is therefore open for discussion.

The exhibition is titled after an essay included in the exhibition catalog and written for this occasion by Ana Luísa Barão, a Glasgow-based art critic and a former Professor
at the School of Fine Arts of Oporto.

Gabríela Frioriksdóttir and Erro @ Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt

Gabríela Friðriksdóttir and Erro at Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankurt.

Erró: Portrait and Landscape. Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt

6. October - 8. January 2012

The Icelandic artist Erró is one of the great solitary figures of twentieth- century art. At once Pop and Baroque, eye-catching and narrative, critical of society and humorous, moral and inscrutable, over the past fifty years he has produced an opulent, unmistakable oeuvre that resists all categorization. His critical narrative collages reproduce in painting combinations of pictorial elements from various popular sources to create eloquent, often disturbing tableaux. As reflections on great social themes such as politics, war, sexuality, science, and art, these dense visual arrangements seem to create a comprehensive atlas of images of the modern world.
On the occasion of Iceland’s turn as guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the SCHIRN will show Erró’s series “Scapes” and, for the first time, the artist’s entire cycle of “Monsters” from 1968. This bizarre series of double portraits confronts the official likenesses of prominent persons with a second, monstrously distorted face. Erró films from the 1960s will be shown as a link between the two work groups.
 Curator: Esther Schlicht, SCHIRN

Gabríela Friðriksdóttir: Crepusculum. Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt

29. September - 8. January 2012

On the occasion of Iceland’s presentation as guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2011, the SCHIRN will dedicate a solo exhibition to this country’s artist Gabríela Friðriksdóttir. Her approach is characterized by the use of a variety of media: drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures figure as prominently as installations and performances.
The artist assembles different cultural, religious, and psychological elements to unfold a unique aesthetical canon of signs, forms, and meanings. This becomes particularly evident in her videos whose surreal scenarios, which abandon all classical narrative patterns, confront the viewer with wondrous worlds: dream images interweave with stories from Norse mythology, elements of sexual psychology are associated with the sphere of spiritual exercises, things of the past merge with the present. In the work Gabríela Friðriksdóttir is conceiving for the SCHIRN, original medieval manuscripts of Icelandic sagas combine with the artist’s mysterious system of signs and a new film to a fantastic universe of its own.

"Requiem for the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide"
Arpine Shakhbandaryan and Zareh.
With participation from Lydia Emily, Terri Berman, Daisuke Okamoto,
Douglas Alvarez, Farzad Kohan and LeNic.

October 8 - November 6, 2011

Exhibition Opening: NELA Gallery Night October 8, 2011 7-10pm
Avenue 50 Studio
Highland Park, CA., 90042

Mexicans and Central Americans celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, a day of remembrance for dead family members and friends. The Armenian-Greek-Assyrians who perished by Ottoman government ethnic cleansing orders in 1915 are also remembered and celebrated by modern-day Armenians.
Armenian Genocide graves do not exist. Armenians were deported to the desert to rot, which saved the Ottoman government the expense of ammunition and mass grave clean-up. Regardless of the fact that 43 of the 50 U.S. states have made individual proclamations recognizing the events of 1915 to 1923 as genocide and the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs has recognized the massacres of 1915 as 'genocide', The United States Government continues to maintain a multi-billion dollar military base in Turkey and remains 'politically correct' about atrocities committed against humanity.

Art remembers the past

Scientific analysis of post-traumatic stress disorder and subsequent recovery requires recognizing the trauma, confronting the source, and supporting the grieving process to allow healing to happen. Accordingly, the "Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide" installation consists of three parts.

Sophia Gasparian's childlike aesthetic juxtaposed with social satire suggest the final process of healing from the denied death trauma. Survival of the "unwanted" and the ability of the oppressed to contribute to the newly adopted culture are signs of social triumph over historic evil. Arpine Shakhbandaryan 's 24K gold leaf and oil "Armenian Genocide Map" addresses the historical events of the 1915 Armenian Genocide while Kaloust Guedel's masterfully executed and emotionally charged work provides the immediate and primal confrontation. Zareh's work suggests a poetic look at death and genocide trauma.

"Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide" includes Gasparian's collaborations with Los Angeles based fellow artists Lydia Emily, Terri Berman, Daisuke Okamoto, Douglas Alvarez, Farzad Kohan and LeNic, addressing Native American Genocide, the current AIDS epidemic, a terrorist feared world and the declaration of Jihad (holy war) on ignorance and institutionalized oppression. Harmonic collaborations amongst these artists, the gallery and the audience are a form of a non-violent discourse.

Founder and Executive Director of Avenue 50 Studio, Kathy Mas-Gallegos' curatorial choices have been courageous, socially oriented and visually pleasing. Through education, cultural exchange and art, solidarity and unity are created within the larger extended community. Avenue 50 Studio serves as a strong force behind these collaborative achievements, crossing Byzantine Latino cultures to remember Los Todos Muertos.

Sophia Gasparian Artist Statement

When your ancestors come from a land of genocide and oppression, you have no choice but to fight for your survival and contribute to securing equal human rights worldwide.

"Requiem for the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide" includes my contemplations on death and collaborations on the cost of our freedom of speech (with LeNic - "Walrus and Me"), on ignorance (with Farzad Kohan - "Jihad on Ignorance"), on stopping the current wars that bring death and destruction (with Lydia Emily - "Hope Bombs"), on the HIV epidemic (with Terri Berman  -"Pediatric AIDS"), on post 911 identity profiling (with Daisuke Okamoto - "Don't Judge Me By My Government"), and new philosophies on looking at death and spiritual imortality ("Death Is Not The End").

My paintings remember the history, honor the dead and carry on our cultural legacy.

You've Been Trumped @ The Hamptons International Film Festival

In this eye-opening David and Goliath story for the 21st century,
a group of proud Scottish homeowners take on the celebrity tycoon, Donald Trump.
At stake is one of Britain's very last stretches of wilderness…

YOU’VE BEEN TRUMPED

OFFICIAL SELECTION
HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

*** Special Jury Prize, Traverse City Film Festival ***
*** Green Award, Sheffield International Documentary Festival ***
*** Scottish Screen Archive Prize, Best Feature Documentary, Edindocs ***

Filmmaker Anthony Baxter will be in New York October 11-13 and is available for interviews.
Film Premieres at HIFF on October 15th.

The billionaire property developer Donald Trump has bought up hundreds of acres on the northeast coast of Scotland, best known to movie-lovers as the setting for the 1983 classic film “Local Hero.”  And like the American oil tycoon played by Burt Lancaster, he needs to buy out a few more locals to make the deal come true. In a land swimming with golf courses, Trump is going to build two more – alongside a 450-room hotel and 1,500 luxury homes.  The trouble is, the land he purchased occupies one of Europe’s most environmentally sensitive stretches of coast, described by one leading scientist as Scotland’s Amazon rain forest.  And the local residents don't want it destroyed.

After the Scottish Government overturns its own environmental laws to give Trump the green light, the stage is set for an extraordinary summer of discontent, as the bulldozers spring into action. Water and power is cut off, land disputes erupt, and some residents have thousands of tons of earth piled up next to their homes.  Complaints go ignored by the police, who instead arrest the film's director, Anthony Baxter.  Local exasperation comes to a surreal head as the now  “Dr” Trump scoops up an honorary doctorate from a local university, even as his tractors turn wild, untouched dunes into fairways.

Told entirely without narration, You've Been Trumped captures the cultural chasm between the glamorous, jet setting and media savvy Donald Trump and a deeply rooted Scottish community, whose local dialect demands a liberal use of subtitles.  What begins as an often amusing clash of world-views grows increasingly bitter and disturbing.

Funny, inspiring and heartbreaking in turns, You’ve Been Trumped is an environmental parable for our celebrity driven times.

Directed by Anthony Baxter, “You’ve Been Trumped” was produced by Angus based independent production company Montrose Pictures Ltd.  The film score features music from world the world renowned Sigur Ros and the band’s frontman Jonsi.

PELOTERO @ Hamptons International Film Festival

PELOTERO
Will have its World Premiere at the upcoming

Hamptons International Film Festival this October

In attendance & available for interviews on behalf of the film:

Directors, Jonathan Paley, Ross Finkel & Trevor Martin as well as

Producers, Bobby Valentine & Andrew Muscato

Narrated by John Leguizamo, PELOTERO tells the story of young Dominican baseball

players in the running for the Major Leagues.

Each year, a handful of Dominican players, almost always from low-income families, are selected to begin their careers in the United States. That invitation comes with a signing bonus and the promise of a secure future for their families. The system, however, is flawed. A must-see for fans of baseball, PELOTERO tells the story of two of the nation’s most talented hopefuls, and their long, rocky road towards achieving their dreams.

PELOTERO provides an intimate portrait of two young prospects as they navigate the calculating, mercenary and often corrupt elements that surround Major League Baseball's recruitment of the island's top talent.

The central question behind PELOTERO is a simple one: Why are Dominicans so good at baseball? The tiny island nation is consistently overrepresented in the Major Leagues, and as America’s pastime continues to globalize, every year brings a fresh crop of young Dominican Peloteros to the top levels of the game.

PELOTERO sheds light on some of the most pressing issues regarding the export of Dominican baseball players to the US: age and identity fraud, exploitation, and the opaque role Major League Baseball plays in determining the fates of young players and their families.
