Spring Brings Outsider Art Fair to New York World’s Foremost Annual Show of Outsider Art to Run May 8 – 11, 2014
Spring Brings Outsider Art Fair to New YorkWorld’s Foremost Annual Show of Outsider Art to Run May 8 – 11, 2014For twenty-one years, the Outsider Art Fair has been the world’s foremost annual show of Outsider, Self-Taught, and Folk Art. And for twenty-one years, the Outsider Art Fair took place in winter. In 2014, for the first time, the Fair will take place in the spring, from May 8 – 11 at Chelsea’s Center 548, the former home of the Dia Art Foundation, located at 548 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011. These dates coincide with the New York edition of Britain’s Frieze Art Fair.“For anyone who has been paying attention to what’s going on in the art world, the Outsider Art Fair is a must-see event,” says Andrew Edlin CEO of Wide Open Arts.Wide Open Arts is pleased to announce its exhibitors for the 2014 Outsider Art Fair. OAF has always showcased work by artists who have been obscure, neglected, or invisible. Eleven galleries who’ve been with the Fair since the beginning will return, offering a mix of the newly discovered with works by legendary outsiders. For the first time since 1999, Philadelphia’s seminal Fleisher/Ollman Gallery will be present. Other dealers from the original lineup include Ames, American Primitive, Bonheur, Henry Boxer, Carl Hammer, Cavin-Morris, Gilley’s, Marion Harris, Ricco/Maresca, and Luise Ross. With a total of 47 exhibitors from around the world, this year’s Fair features artists from countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (where Rigobert Nimi makes intricate, science-fiction-inspired sculptures from recycled industrial materials, exhibited by Galerie Degbomey in Paris), New Zealand (where Susan Te Kahurangi King’s striking Donald Duck drawings from the late 1950s will be shown by Chris Byrne and Marquand Books), and Brazil (where Alcides Pereira dos Santos made his biblically-inspired, boldly geometric paintings of nature and technology, exhibited by Sao Paulo’s Galeria Estação). Yukiko Koide returns with her dynamic artists from Japanese workshops, and for the first time Megumi Ogita Gallery, also from Tokyo, will be displaying the calligraphic drawings of Shoko Kanazawa. And Paris’ Hervé Perdriolle, who played a pivotal role in curating the Cartier Foundation’s groundbreaking Histoires de Voir exhibition in 2012, also makes his New York debut with a booth comprised solely of self-taught artists from India. The 2014 Outsider Art Fair also welcomes new exhibitors like Marlborough Chelsea (soloing the embroidered cut-and-paste works by skateboarder Tony Cox), Hirschl & Adler (with drawings by Edward Deeds, a longtime Missouri state mental hospital patient whose work was rescued from a roadside trash heap) and Zieher Smith (featuring vernacular photographs from their recent acclaimed Photo Brut exhibition). The Outsider Art Fair opens Thursday, May 8. God’s Love We Deliver, the NYC metropolitan area’s leading provider of life-sustaining meals and nutrition counseling for people living with severe illness, will be the evening’s beneficiary. Admission for early access, from 3:00-6:00 p.m., is $100. The general Vernissage is from 6:00-9:00 p.m., with an admission price of $50. Daily tickets for the remainder of the show will be $20 and a pass for the full run $50. Hours are Friday, May 9th and Saturday, May 10th from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday May 11th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information please contact info@outsiderartfair.com or 212-337-3338 2014 ExhibitorsAmerican Primitive Gallery, New YorkAmes Gallery, BerkeleyAndrew Edlin Gallery, New YorkBaumann + Muksian, Basel/San FranciscoCarl Hammer Gallery, ChicagoCavin-Morris Gallery, New YorkChris Byrne + Marquand Books, Dallas/SeattleCreative Growth Art Center, OaklandDean Jensen Gallery, MilwaukeeFleisher/Ollman Gallery, PhiladelphiaFred Giampietro Gallery, New HavenGaleria Estação, São PauloGalerie Anne de Villepoix, ParisGalerie Bonheur, St. LouisGalerie Bourbon Lally, Bourdon, HaitiGalerie Christian Berst, ParisGalerie Degbomey, Fleurance, FranceGalerie du Marché, LausanneGalerie Hervé Perdriolle Art Contemporain Inde(s), ParisGalerie St. Etienne, New YorkGalerie Toxic, LuxembourgGallery at HAI, Long Island CityGarde Rail Gallery, AustinGeorge Jacobs Self-Taught Art, NewportGilley’s Gallery, Baton RougeGrey Carter Objects of Art, McLean, VAHenry Boxer Gallery, LondonHill Gallery, Birmingham, MIHirschl & Adler, New YorkInstitute 193, Lexington, KYJudy A. Wir freuen uns, 'Paintings', die erste Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Lawrence Power mit neuen mittel- und großformatigen Arbeiten auf Leinwand anzukündigen.

Duration of the exhibition:
April 12 - May 24, 2014

Special opening hours during the Gallery Weekend: May 2 - 4, 2014, 12 am - 7 pm
We are pleased to announce the first solo exhibition 'Paintings' by Lawrence Power with new mid- and large-size paintings on canvas.
"When I am away from it, my thoughts revolve around this image. Where has it been before, masked & hidden. I think I have known this image all my life but did not make it visible before. And it is not possible to retrace all the steps that led to this finality ..." (Philip Guston 1978)
Power's exploration of the boundaries of abstraction and figuration and their dynamic inter- and counteraction gives rise to varied and powerful painting through the deployment of means which mutually enhance each other: gestural expressiveness contrasts with decorative ornamentation, keen color fields meet aggressive collaged elements. The shrill simplification and delicate painterliness of pictorial elements in schemes of composition which interfere with and displace each other are united in potent and deeply mysterious paintings owing only to Power's magic realization.
Lawrence Power, born in Lowerhutt, New Zealand, 1982, lives and works in Berlin. He completed his painting studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada, in 2005. In 2011, he graduated in the class of Schwontkowski / class of Reyle at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg.
The current exhibition 'The weight of things' by Victor Berezovsky is open until April 5, 2014.

The Hole is proud to present a collaborative booth for Art Cologne: Collaborations featuring works byAtelier Pica Pica, Ayan Farah, Holton Rower, Kadar Brock, Kasper Sonne, Matthew Stone,Shane Bradford and Thomas Øvlisen. Featuring works from both Hole and V1 Gallery artists, the installation is curated by both galleries jointly and features works that push the boundaries of what an abstract painting can be.
From Ayan Farah and Kadar Brock who work with natural and mechanical processes to record history and time on a surface; to Holton Rower and Shane Bradford who use the intrinsic properties of flowing paint to create abstraction; to Kasper Sonne or Thomas Øvlisen who use destruction as a means to create; all artists in our joint presentation are innovating in process and imbuing works with a handmade and personal intensity.

About Collaborations:
ART COLOGNE, the world's oldest-established fair for modern and contemporary art, and the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) are pleased to present 'COLLABORATIONS', a new sector to be launched at the 48th edition of Art Cologne, April 10-13, 2014. All galleries participating in 'COLLABORATIONS' will showcase a program based on a jointly planned project. The new scheme will form the third mainstay of the Fair alongside the two major sections titled 'GALERIEN' and 'NEW CONTEMPORARIES'.
ART COLOGNE and NADA have worked closely together to develop the 'COLLABORATIONS' criteria. The idea is to encourage galleries to engage with and explore the concept of collaboration. Projects span every aspect of collaborative practice. Presenting booths shared by two galleries and/or a single gallery presenting a collaborative project, the aim of the 'COLLABORATIONS' section is to point out new artistic parallels and to spark interaction - for example between an emerging gallery and an established gallery, or between different artistic trends, styles and approaches, across national borders.

THRUSH HOLMES MORE Closing Saturday 5 April
THRUSH HOLMESMOREClosing Saturday 5 April
Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce MORE, the gratuitous 2nd helping of Toronto-based artist Thrush Holmes. Why serpents, florals, fire extinguishers, iron crosses, sirens, double headed axes, hieroglyphics, peace signs, still lives, infinity symbols, and a variety of other worldly materials? There are absolutely no answers, only possibilities and further questioning. In a sense, Thrush Holmes' bold artistic agenda composes an operatic way of getting through this visual world of ours. Relics of the day found, dispersed, buried, forgotten, and ultimately resurrected bring to life, or back to life, highly evolved and charged iconographies of grace rendered. To understand the beauty and wisdom, humor and mistakes, and the realism and abstract nature of form, are the goals, have been the goals, and will remain the goals.Basquiat, Pollock, Twombly, DeKooning...to name a few, and this stretches beyond the realm of painting. One could even mention Neil Young, Sonic Youth, and Bob Dylan as well as Lord Byron, Truman Capote, and Oscar Wilde as artists of great faith and determination in the traditions of their chosen crafts. The seemingly effortless nature of ancient cave painting, certain periods of African art, late modes of European modernism all get thrown into the soup that is the Thrush Holmes universe. The viewer is shown a variety of passages that drift and float, caress and seduce, kiss and kill.Thrush Holmes lives and works in Toronto and has been widely exhibited throughout Canada. His work can be found in permanent collections such as the Elton John Aids Foundation, Sony Dreamworks, and Defjam Records among others.Lauren Licata, Director![]()
